Comics and their superheroes have always utilized this methodology. Spider-Man, Hulk, etc came from the fear of nuclear power and the effects on people. X-Men played into minorities integrating into society, fighting for acceptance.
Superhero-movies tapping into the whole "militarize every invention" bit, that's just superheroes being superheroes, in fact.

It's a shame to see Michael B. Jordan and Toby Kebbell wasted in this. With the right script and direction (and in Doom's case a good design) they could have been really good adaptations of the characters.

Also does The Thing have Jamie Bell's voice or does he have something more fitting? I've forgotten if any trailers even have him speaking.

Inside Out is the clear winner there.
