FF7 Remake was poor at being an action game as the combos and responsive attacks felt nonexistent. Enemies hardly ever retaliated or attacked you and there weren't very many of them to overwhelm you so what you're left with is a system where you mash X/A to winhis honestly looks like a massive step back from the battle system of FF7 Remake that actually felt like a game that used RPG concepts to enhance an action game.
QTEs are great when done right. Sekiro, God of War, BayonettaQTE's suck but who cares, give me great story, characters music and combat and I'm golden
Can't say I am a fan of Tactics Ogre design to be honest.I don't necessarily think it's westernized.
The combat is clearly inspired by games like DMC which are distinctively Japanese, and JRPG's have a long history of taking inspiration from medieval Europe (more so than ancient Japan).
For example Tactics Ogre characters would fit in perfectly in this world (with slightly less baggy pants):
Doesn't even look like Final Fantasy anymore. Just give me the most ridiculous looking turn. Based JRPG with pre rendered backgrounds ever.
If this were a AAA spin-off, I'd be less bearish on this title. It's not even that it's not turn based for me, it's that it just given up on the strategic layer altogether in favor of a twitchy combo system which can be fun, but isn't in the DNA of a mainline FF game.
. . .if they deliver an actually decent story then that'll ease the sting of SE not investing any effort into making or evolving on the turn-based formula for a big budget modern AAA title, but not holding my breath (despite folks desperately trying to draw comparisons to solid narrative efforts from SE in the past with FF: Tactics and Vagrant Story).
The DMC combat directors influence is heavy.
They said their concept for the battle system was like Final Fantasy V as an action game. It’s going to be all about putting together different combinations of abilities.Well said if there's no strategic element this will be disappointing as a final fantasy game
Have you played FF14 by any chance?
It was reminiscent of older Final Fantasies with high quality pixel art and a banger soundtrack. Name brand ironically still had a factor in it's sales since it looked so similar. OT's only failing is to a degree lackluster story due to lack of character interaction. Presentation, music, and battle system are very engaging.Octopath Traveler sold more than 3.5 million units(and was not frontloaded) and was a pure old school JRPG, and zero brand awareness. What's the excuse for OT for doing well?
They said it’s “semi-open world”, so I’m assuming this is just a dungeon.so the combat looks amazing but like in the previews is said , there is very little option when it comes to exploration although they hope it was only in the area of the demo so they dont reveal to much
i really hope that is the case , as good as the combat is i dont want to just traverse a corridor from one boss to another
All this is just objectively untrue, especially on hard mode.as the combos and responsive attacks felt nonexistent. Enemies hardly ever retaliated or attacked you and there weren't very many of them to overwhelm you so what you're left with is a system where you mash X/A to win
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sold 20.61 million units in 6 weeks at full price. This is super hype, the game looks fantastic on top of all the positive praise.
It's great that FF is doing something different, turn based is boring now and most people don't care for it.
Also, all FF games have a ton of cinematics, why are people acting like that's a surprise lol
Can't wait to plat it
I highly disagree with that, I still enjoy good turn based combat, I currently having blast with Octopath 2.turn based is boring now and most people don't care for it.
Quite possibly the dumbest take in this thread. There's no franchise with more variation in its gameplay across the entire series than Final Fantasy.Terrible writing, over the top cutscenes, and generic gameplay. Yep, it is a FF game.
That actually whats refreshing about it, when was the last time we got proper fantasy setting in single player FF game? Was hoping for something very different than just traditional fantasy.
What is wrong with Gears, Halo and WoW writing and gameplay? The writing in those games are normal and not annoying like FF games. FF gameplay is a generic rip off of other games. Where as Gears, Halo, and WoW basically invented so many new game play mechanics that are used in games today.Quite possibly the dumbest take in this thread. Complaining about "Terrible Writing" and "Generic Gameplay" is rich coming from someone who praises Gears, Halo and WoW.
Glad I'm not the only one who missed colours. Much dark much shadow much moody flames. This is the Dark Souls era. We're a long way from Spira.Still not sure how I feel about it. Have gotten less hype over the last year or so. Was hoping for something very different than just traditional fantasy. Aside from the summons themselves, the game is rather color bland, greys, browns, muddy greens. I understand they took inspiration from Witcher or Game of Thrones or whatever, but some of the settings just look very “been there, done that”. And character designs look like they could be right out of an expansion for FF14. For some people this is a great thing, for me, it just looks like the same style they’ve been using for the MMO for years and years.
I’ll still likely get it at some point, and the action looks solid, but it feels grounded in these fantasy tropes we’ve done a million times. Oh ya, and fighting the summons has become such a staple in nearly all FF games now that it’s also a “been there, done that” feeling. I guess that just most of that these trailers have made me feel. Been there. Done that.
The writing in modern Final Fantasy games, most notably in FFXIV, is miles better than anything found in your Bro shooters or World of Warcraft, which even fans don't take seriously anymore. What is wrong with Gears, Halo and WoW writing and gameplay? I figure that FF just needs to be for the big audience and hence they will not get around the action combat. The audience for old school turn based FF is just too small. Wasn't too big of a fan of it either as at some point it became just about grinding your characters up. Rather get some sort of skill in there to offset the grinding for most of the people. This is not a FF, for fuck sake. They just destroy the essence of FF. Where's the Party system? Where's the character development between your members. Fuck this game. I don't understand why they obsessed with lame western action combats. FF is FF they should stick to why FF is being called FF. Now this game is just a DMC or Dark Souls wannabe.
I would love to see WRPG that has combat any where close to this.I don't understand why they obsessed with lame western action combats.
