Possibly, but I do think there is more to it. FF has always been the blockbuster of the JRPGs. So it need to be big and epic and I assume this is also how the devs themselves want it to be. But I don't think you can get the needed sales numbers with a more traditional FF these days. May be wrong though.I wouldn't call it "too small", just not as profitable as other AAA games.
Other turn-based games manage to sell pretty well nowadays.
DQ11 sold more than 6 million copies (with a *much* smaller budget than FF 15).
Persona 5 more than 3 million copies.
And I'm not even taking into account Pokemon.
The problem with Squeenix is that they're just too greedy. They don't want "only" 6 million copies. They are not even happy with 10 million copies.
They want to maximize profit at all costs, even if they have to turn FF into something it never was (an action game) in order to sell more.
I'm not too optimistic about Dragon Quest 12, to be honest.
If they pull the same crap of turning it into some action-oriented game, I'm done with Squeenix.
I agree with this. Visually this game is VERY boring. No color, no CG cutscenes, bland art direction. That looks.. so artistically unexpressive and sterile...

I highly disagree with that, I still enjoy good turn based combat, I currently having blast with Octopath 2.
OK- just watched this in 4k on the TV and don't understand why people saying it looks last gen. It may not look like whatever idea we imagined a "next gen" Final Fantasy to look like but you have to compare it against the competition and the previous FF and I see improvements in several areas such as lighting and in particular texture detail and environmental density. That one area towards the end of the demo reminds me a lot of Demon's Souls. I'm happy with this. I've given up the illusion that this gen is ever going to totally blow me away.
We'll eventually start getting Unreal 5 engine games that don't have any cross gen trappings but I'm not expecting the framerates and resolutions to maintain high numbers when that happens. This definitely has some kind of next gen look to it. Looks better than FF7 remake in terms of tech. That's good enough for me.
Combat looks like it could turn out great though I have to study it more to see if it actually has depth to it or whether it's typical mmo type combat. The addition of a dmc style moveset could turn out to be a good thing I'm thinking as long as they can maintain some rpg qualities.
Easy, majority of people in GAF are graphic whores, nothing is good enough for them. They have stupid level high expectation of what "next gen" suppose to look like.OK- just watched this in 4k on the TV and don't understand why people saying it looks last gen.

It's already more than 20 years since FF left "traditional turn-based JRPG" world.I wouldn't call it "too small", just not as profitable as other AAA games.

Consider that this game is coming out because there were tons of people in the last decade that found those games interesting, The fact that you are interested in this one is likely to mean it's changing things that people spent the last decade enjoying in final fantasy.I don’t get people saying this looks bad. This is like the first ff in a decade that actually looks interesting to me
Well there’s ff7 remake 2 - and we haven’t even seen the full picture with this if there is semi open areas and good exploration this has major potential imoConsider that this game is coming out because there were tons of people in the last decade that found those games interesting, The fact that you are interested in this one is likely to mean it's changing things that people spent the last decade enjoying in final fantasy.
Again, this looks like a huge Dowgrade from FF7 remake to me.

Well that's not me, again, I thought remake was drastically different than past games but also utilized concepts from past games to create unique gameplay systems, And while some may have issues with remake it's usually things like the controls not being snappy enough or not being able to tell Ai where to stay rather than hating the idea of being able to switch characters. The best thing they could do is stop trying to cater to ‘fans’ of final fantasy at this point
According to some people in this thread it’s not final fantasy if it doesn’t look like pixel remasters lol
Taking a second look at this pic. That wolf is going straight for that `Bighorns` junk causing it 9 damage.
I think you may be done with SquareenixI wouldn't call it "too small", just not as profitable as other AAA games.

What did Final fantasy VII remake sell so far? I think a devil may cry sequel to final fantasy XV is going to struggle to be honest. High fantasy setting as well which graphically looks like a good ps4 pro game.
I'll deffo play it at some point but it doesn't look like a final fantasy game to me, looks like a ditch effort by square to try something completely new to save the franchise.
I don't get how you have final fantasy that isn't an rpg.
All in on ff vii part two later this year though.
This new game is positioned to sell higher than latest entries, it’s obviously aimed at a bigger crowd than the usual. Specially because I’m not sure Square was that satisfied with FF7R total sales all things considered. They still want that 20ml sales many western big IP reach and they seem to be stuck at 5/8 for a decade. Look at Yoshida possibly managing to finally break that barrier…
Please explain to me what part this looks like “Souls” if you saying this because it has dark fantasy setting, you do know there games like Drakengard that came before Demons Souls with dark fantasy setting…..right?My favourite FF was 13-2 so I don't mind different. But FF16 does not look different we can see clearly were they got their inspiration from. Or should I say From.
Looks to draw inspiration from many titles to me. More so particuarly projects within the company from the 90s. Narrow view to have imo. I think some fans just can't shake the past and carry a grudge. My favourite FF was 13-2 so I don't mind different. Does the entire game take place at night? I haven't seen any day time game play of this.
Would you consider the witcher to be an action game? Or what about say... Vagrant Story?I wouldn't call it "too small", just not as profitable as other AAA games.

Can't say if serious. I would just take it that you are joking.I agree with this. Visually this game is VERY boring. No color, no CG cutscenes, bland art direction.
To be honest I still like turn based games when I just want to chill, but something definitely needs doing to FFIX‘s combat as it’s the worse in the series in my opinion. Saying that it’s still my favourite in the series as the story and tone still haven’t been surpassed in any other game I’ve played.Same.
Been playing FF since 2 (US) and its hard for me to revisit the turn based games now. A lot of people don’t want to admit it but turn based rpgs have very low sales ceilings.
I do wonder what they will do to FFIX when the time comes show the remake
happens with every FF.Wow, it seems like a lot of the people here played FFXVI to say it’s not FF and it’s too dark and serious and say “that’s not how I want my gameplay”. What copies did you play, guys?

I don’t get this argument about how dark the story is. Have these people not played VI, VII, IX or X? They all have very dark themes throughout albeit mixed with some whimsy.Wow, it seems like a lot of the people here played FFXVI to say it’s not FF and it’s too dark and serious and say “that’s not how I want my gameplay”. what makes you think that it isnt an rpg ?What did Final fantasy VII remake sell so far? I think a devil may cry sequel to final fantasy XV is going to struggle to be honest. High fantasy setting as well which graphically looks like a good ps4 pro game.

I fucking hate this shit.Surprised no one is talking about this:However, action gamers – do not fret. The skill ceiling is even higher in the third setting you’ll get to pick once you finish the game. Aptly named ‘Final Fantasy’, the New Game+ mode will provide players with an extra challenge should they be up for it, not only increasing the strength of enemies but also their placement throughout the game as well as providing players with full-on different battles.
The hot takes are really coming in on his one. What did Final fantasy VII remake sell so far? I think a devil may cry sequel to final fantasy XV is going to struggle to be honest. High fantasy setting as well which graphically looks like a good ps4 pro game.

Sounds like you just want to replay the old games.I know, and I've just started it. But while I loved the first game and probably will this obe too(and wish the franchise to continue and grow), its not the same.
Same thing as Castlevania.People say that there are substitutes out there and sure there is, and some of them are on par with some of the best of Castlevania, but its not the same, as they don't share the music, the mythos, the "vibe" and so much more. It's not the same.
Oh yes... that is the one thing I hate about this game and anytime devs do that to be honest.I fucking hate this shit.
Hopefully the first run is not gonna be a cakewalk...
People apparently still aren't aware that each mainline FF game is different. Tbf it's only been 25 years. The hot takes are really coming in on his one.

I grew up with the series in the 90s with turnbased entries, thought XIII and XV were very disappointing (but had some merits still like music, art direction and some story themes), don't enjoy a lot of modern media, particuarly super hero stuff, otaku anime filth, online games etc.. so would say I'm quite critical in general of newer works, but I can tell this will be a very good and memorable FF, more so for the right reasons compared to other recent entries. The series has always been about delivering a story and presenting a new world to me, which is the focal point of this game rather than open world slogging like the Witcher, Elden Ring, FFXV....
Can’t find the quotes but in April the RPG mechanics and gameplay loop will be showcased. Will they ever show anything other than combat? When are we gonna get a proper look at a town or city? Or some exploration in a cave or dungeon, or a forest, or some other cool looking location? How about a scene of dialogue between characters? Anything? I‘m getting pretty bored with this constant focus on combat; it‘s been that way since the very first trailer. Do they think people are so dazzled by their overly hectic looking combat system that no one wants to see anything else? Seriously, have we seen any kind of gameplay so far that doesn’t involve combat?
Even funnier when we know for a fact from several years of gaming stats that majority of players only play games once, almost never twice, hell most people don't even complete games...Oh yes... that is the one thing I hate about this game and anytime devs do that to be honest.
DO NOT hide a difficulty setting behind a second playthrough.
The only reason that crap was ever a thing was to discourage people from selling off the game immediately after they finished it.
let us choose from the start, please.
