It's never been this extreme where you can actually see this whole space of gaming pretty much plateau. There's a price to pay for corruption, it's not free.
You make a good point, let's not forget though how easy it is to get access to media these days via internet/phones compared to back then.
A host of a UK gaming show back in the 90s once admitted they would receive calls from some publishers not happy with the reviews of the product. The TV show people and magazines were invited to the parties and events back then as well.
It's never been sincere journalism , it's about the relationship between the publisher and the media above all else and how to sell the product. It's why I always advise people to make their own minds up about purchasing a game especially in the push for digital purchases, with the inability to borrow a friends or relatives copy to try out or infrequent release of demos to download , it will only get worse
