Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

but it is exactly what is going to be happen.

Maybe.

If that GDDR5 is real there is something strange.
the move engines are connected to the esram.

GDDR5 = No esram = no move engines.
But SDK leak image mention the move engines.

I am sorry, but you are downplaying the spec differences a little bit too much. It's not 170GB/s for the whole RAM. It's 8GB with 68GB/s and 32MB with 102GB/s. You can use them both at the same time, but it's clearly not the same as if you had 8GB with 176GB/s. Then there is the rumor about the amount of reserved RAM/CPU cores, which seems to be another disadvantage for the Xbox (~5GB RAM and 6 cores available for games with the Xbox, ~7GB and 7 cores for the PS4). And the PS4 has not just an easier design, but also 50% more processing power, if the rumors are true. And that will result in differences, which can be noticed not only by Digital Foundry. Don't want to kill your excitement, and it does not mean the games will look "bad", but the specs are unfortunately not that great. I hope that at least the games are good.

Yeah, it's going to be really interesting how this plays out if the Durango OS is going to use more RAM/cores. On one hand, that would be great for the games as they have more resources, but on the other hand, if MS is using that much RAM, then they're hopefully going to have one hell of an OS, and Sony's OS could be lacking in features by comparison (and by setting the bar at 1GB from the start, Sony will have trouble if they wanted to add more to their OS, whereas MS has the option of slimming down the OS memory potentially). It's definitely a balancing game.

Either way, I'm getting both systems. To be honest, the 360 was my primary console this gen, and I'm hoping the Durango will be my primary next gen as well. I've invested lots into the ecosystem and all of my friends are in it (and more than likely they'll automatically transfer to next-gen).

One month from today (E3!!) we should start getting a better picture.

It gets even more believable when he's admitted to working at Blizzard as a cinematic animator in the past.

And there are other posts that hint at him being a member of the games industry / animator, have friends who work in studios, etc.

You didn't read my post, dammit. This guy might work in Blizzard but it doesn't mean he had access to the console or even heard of it. You might be trolled.

That being said, are you willing to bet your account, boy?!

Afaik

Move engines are part of the GPU memory controller

ESRAM and memory are separate

If they do GDDR5... I'm willing to bet it will be split pool of DDR3 and GDDR5

I think ESRAM is on the southbridge, so it would be a switch...

1. I'm a girl :-P

2. There's a very good chance Blizzard is working on a Durango port for Diablo 3. As a character animator who's worked there for a while, there's a very good chance he could have easily heard or found out something, giving potential credence to his posts

3. I'm not betting anything. I'm not making a single claim about Durango. :-)

Damn, I thought the avatar was ironic. Sorry.

Anyway, there is a chance, but I doubt it. Generally character animators work with the engine the game uses, an engine that would be ported by specific people. A character or cinematics animator would have nothing to do with it.

Plus, you think he'd reveal this in GAF?

Since 98% of GAF is taking it as a joke anyway, he has nothing to lose except the wrath of bish.

Hmm.

Damn, I thought the avatar was ironic. Sorry.

It's a satire of the "hai boyz i'm a girl playing call of duty / wow pay attention 2 me" phenomenon.

Plus, you think he'd reveal this in GAF?

Well, he quickly "covered his tracks" by backpedaling, saying it's a guess. But if the 21st rolls around and he's right...I guess people will start to take him a lot more seriously.

Stepped away from GAF for a few minutes and BAM. The plot continues to thicken.

Umm..yeah. I have a feeling that where there is smoke...you know the rest. After what you posted, I think the Ko-taco & IGN GAF lurkers are already deciding if this is a story to wake up to. It would be a sad day if this guy kept his account only to lose his gig because we were joking on GAF.

So 3-4GB DDR3, 8GB GDDR5 should be good enough compromise.

Look at the footage of Watch Dogs on PS4.

You think a 1.2TFLOP GPU, 8GB DDR3 + ESRAM, and a copy pasta of the PS4 CPU is enough to deliver smooth gameplay like the PS4 version?

And it's just targeting 30fps.

We haven't actually seen Watch Dogs running on PS4 yet.

Yes. If the insiders are correct and MS is going cheaper with more of a focus on content, the rumors would be incredibly far-fetched. Expect it to be simple, powerful, but not too powerful.

Even with current leaked specs... I don't think Durango would be less cheaper than PS4.

This is what I'm expecting. All of the rumors we've been hearing lately are just too outlandish. If there is a spec boost from the leaks, I'm willing to be it'll be a relatively simple change that fits into the previous outlined architecture well. Split pools, completely changed RAM types, and entirely new GPUs just plain don't fit. Even Sony's GDDR5 bomb fit into the previously outlined design because it wound up being the same number of chips as the 4GB was originally going to be before the density improvements.

I just don't want people in here to get their hopes up for a huge tech spec change only to be let down.

And what incentive is there for them to go uber-powerful when they know all they have to do is put the money they save into buying timed exclusives. The mass market couldn't care less if MS has GDDR5 memory or not. If they have the hot game of the moment, they win. Same goes for Nintendo and Sony, or possibly some device we've not heard of yet. Content is king.

I think it would be slightly cheaper but amount to the same MSRP if Sony puts their 3D camera in every SKU which is incredibly likely for parity and considering how they've been treating it in PR.

EDIT: I also believe the rumour that Sony will put more HDD space in each SKU too.

Exactly. Microsoft is going to focus on features, services, and games this time around, not hardware. I know a lot of people are pessimistic about Microsoft's goals for Durango but I think it'll be very successful for them and I think their fanbase will likely wind up being quite pleased. I don't buy that they're totally dropping the core audience and I look forward to seeing what their new IPs bring to the table and what new features XBL will have.

While I think locking up IPs and moneyhats are still viable... MS put in a mindset with third parties for 2 gens that if you put a game on Xbox you usually get the best performing console version.

So it's going to be weird not seeing that happen again.

3rd parties dont care about best performance, they care about ease of development (which was the biggest +ve for the 360) & sales.

I think this is a bit off. The Wii U being as underpowered as it is did it no favors, people looked at the ports and came to the conclusion that the Wii U was basically on the same level as what they have now so why upgrade?

The fact that the vast overwhelming majority of games looked better on the 360 compared to the PS3 played a role too in the success of the 360. Its something people constantly saw and constantly talked about, a tipping point for new consumers to lean one way rather than another.

Obviously content is the most important thing but the other stuff matters too.

It'll be weird for, like, a day. Shit happens. I remember when Nintendo was the boss of all bosses. Shit happens. Generation shifts are "clean slate" time.

It seems unlikely they are going to war with a machine as powerful as the PS4.

Microsoft's going to challenge Sony with price and exclusives, and if they are including the next gen kinect then there's really no way they're going to have something as powerful.

Because all of them developers sure jumped ship over PS2 to Xbox and GC. lol

What if it was the other way around? Would create an interesting scenario on Sony's true direction.

If MS switched to GDDR5 this late in the manufacturing process then I wouldnt trust their console to be at all reliable. Even a design decision like memory needs to be made at least a year in advance of the machine being put into production.

I don't think that's what got people involved in the Xbox ecosystem though. They're likely focusing on their strengths for next gen since the don't think people will care much about things like resolution differences. Purely speculation, but they also probably didn't rhink Sony could afford to go as high with specs as they did and targeted a ballpark they thought would be similar.

Not unless they plan on taking a pretty big hit on consoles sold which seems completely against what they've suggested in the past.

Wii did gangbusters with shit hardware and not many games that otherwise set the charts on fire. WiiU doesn't gave the killer app (the content) that Wii had, that's why it's not selling as well. Again, content is king.

Guys, stop getting excited about spec speculation. It's what we've known for a while and not anything more. Games will still look nice.
