In that case, Sony had Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok in 2022, and Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Astro Bot (GOTY winner) in 2024.

Exactly this, theres still too much negative buzz around MKW despite it being a solid game. The new DK game looks great but the hype around it is fairly niche, mainly just among those who already have a S2 (myself included) and absolutely no one is talking about MP4

GOTY used to be a fun thing where people just talk about what their personal favorite thing is and you learn about new stuff from people. It's been a hellscape instead for some time pushing extreme conformity. If you enjoy it that's fine, but people get way too hung up on this stuff. So many games come out now that no one on here has played even close to all of them, and shrinking all the diverse genres down to just 1 at the top is usually reductive, inaccurate and pointless. When you look back at previous GOTY lists, very few people end up agreeing with it. It tends to favor mainstream stuff and is ultimately a popularity contest.

and actually some of those games did win goty awards like GT7

That said, Bananza is from the studio that made Super Mario Odyssey and MP4 is obviously the studio that made Metroid Prime. Living up to either of those is a tall task, but they're absolutely capable of being better than Ex33.

This. Mario Kart World is far and away my favorite Mario Kart game, and it might have snuck in a nomination in a year with a weaker overall slate, but I don't think it makes the cut this year.

As far as MP4 and DKB are concerned, we need to wait to see what the critical reception looks like. I think both OP and the dismissive people in this thread are showing way too much certainty here, just in opposite directions. I agree that Expedition 33 is the game to beat though.

I'd say that if both DKB and MP4 receive critical acclaim, they might take votes from each other when awards time rolls around, but people thought that about Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey too, and BotW still mopped up.

The thing that's really working in E33's favor is it isn't only a great game, it's a great game that comes bundled with a great underdog story about how a small upstart developer beat the odds and made the game they wanted to make without compromising, and I think there's a powerful desire to reward that right now, given the state of the industry at large.

Realistically, DK Bananza could be the only one with a chance to be even nominated.

Metroid Prime 4 looks too safe and even though the races themselves are fun, MK World's overworld exploration is too undercooked.
