Go Canada!

I'm still deciding whether to buy a Roots Team Canada shirt seeing as I can get 25 percent off....I'll prolly cave after Canada picks up its first medal, hopefully soon like in Sydney when Whitfield won on like the first day :)

Apparentally TSN has live coverage at 1:30 AM Saturday morning, thats only 6 hours away!

And Brian Williams > Bob Costas

I'll basically be sleeping in a lot for the next week or so, and being up fairly early after that, and the Olympics means something on late at night...finally.

I might pick up a T-Shirt, but who knows if I'll feel like it...without your nice 25% off, I have a feeling I'll be gouged.

EDIT: my interest in the Oly baseball tourney relates to my long-held belief that no sport in the world needs a "World Cup" style international best-on-best competition more than baseball. God it would rule.
I believe plans are being worked out for an MLB/Japanese League Championship series

I'm stickying this, but please be mindful that us Americans are cursed with piss-poor time-delayed coverage, so use spoiler tags when commenting on events as they happen and visibly label what event you are talking about.

Does anyone else think that the Olympics just plain sucks? You have a bunch of sports that are boring to watch (running, swimming, fencing), some sports that are better to watch in pre-existing leagues (Worldcup soccer or Bundesleague soccer, MLB baseball, NBA basketball), some sports that nobody really cares about (ping pong, water polo, handball), tons of athletes that you've never heard of and couldn't really care less about and lots of sheepish nationalism backing it all up. There's also this overly pretentious opening ceremony going on with a 9 year old kid riding a paper boat on a lake and lots of "dramatic" singing going on. Ugh, why this is all so popular is beyond me.

I have just watched a rerun of an opening ceremony, and holy shit was it just impossibly beautiful. Major kudos to whoever designed and staged this.

Yup, but Katie and Costas had to ruin it with their horrible one-liners

What next? They hold a press conference, announce they're gay and then pull out of the Olympics?

It does? How about all those players from other countries? It's taking the best players from around the world and putting them in one league. It really does become a "World Series."

Right. And this was the makeup of Major League Baseball in 1903.

World Series is like all the other silly tags in American sports, where the club team that wins suddenly becomes the world champion (though in football at least it'd hold more water).

I heard they lost an exhibition match already.

They didn't lose. They got bitchslapped.

I heard on the news this morning that the U.S. women's swim team's outfits were sort of "see through" and they only found out after they went into the water. Apparently they had to add special lining in the suits to cover them up. Anyone have pics of this glorious accident?

Wierd...first I heard it was the Canadian team's swimsuits on the radio, then I read it was the British team in a paper. Beginning to think this is just some urban myth that's spread like wildfire.

I detest the IOC, the fake ass sentimentality, the bullshit calls for peace, the corruption, the scandals, the way US networks have controlled aspects of the games the last twenty years, and Toronto's stupid habit of bidding for a summer games every eight years when there isn't a hope in hades of making a dime off it ("OMG IT'D BE A BOON TO THE CITY!!!"...yeah ok, tell that to Montreal). But I love the competition. Always have. There are few events in sports that compares to the sprint races, be it track and field or the heavily hyped showdown in swimming with Thorpe versus Phelps. Seeing these athletes perform and compete at the highest level is what it's all about for me. I agree about some of the other sports though...stuff like soccer is just pointless to me. But I'll probably even watch some of that, so whatever.

Unbelievable. Can't wait to hear how sane people feel about Costas' scripted remarks about America.

Costas is a dick...always has been, always will be. Might be the most overrated journalist on planet earth (certainly one of the most annoying), and that's despite him being good. The shit he pulled in '96 was simply beyond words...

usa men's gymnastics has a shot at a medal this year i think. a long shot, but still a shot. all i care to watch are gymnastics and judo this year.

What do you mean "long shot at a medal"? 2003 Anaheim World Championships they came in second to China. They have more of a chance to medal.

Ok, NBC's coverage is a fucking atrocity. Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can get?

Isn't CBC available to people in the northern half of america? They have live coverage everyday for like 5 hours.

Haha

CBC covered it awesome Brian Williams and Peter Mansbridge know when to speak and when to be quiet

And why the hell did Couric and Costas say the Nicolas Gill "controversey" was a major one in Canada? It fizzled out in one day and no one here cares, Gill even said he was young and stupid when he voted for sovereignty

Just NBC blowing things out of proportions due to ignorance once again

Bob Costas and Katie Couric blab over everything with useless trivia that you should know, cut to commercial every four seconds, and just compeletly ruin the experience. I would have liked to listened to Bjork's song, but Bob and Katie had to explain how the a giant sheet was covering the athletes. NO SHIT! NBC is useless at events like this.

XMonkey

lacks enthusiasm.
Wow, our local NBC affiliate in Socal fucked up so badly on the HD coverage. It started out working, with slightly off-sync audio...then it switched to the 2002 Winter Olympics women's figure skating and now I think they are showing the opening ceremony for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Fucktards, I wanted to see the beauty of the thing in HD.

I had to turn it off because of the whole commercial break every 3-4 minutes thing. It was super annoying... You think that because it was taped and not live they could have at least returned from commercial without skipping large chunks of the ceremony :-(

I think it's ironic that both the UK and the US also have Roots clothes. Support your olympic team by buying Canadian!

Seriously. That was so infuriating. I was actually yelling at my television for them to shut the hell up.

I really wish we had better coverage than this.

NBC HD's coverage was apparently leaps and bounds about the actual NBC coverage. No Couric/Costas, especially. I could hear Bjork's song for one thing.

In fact, your NBC HD station might be replaying the opening ceremonies right now, mine is.

I'd also like to say those ceremonies were very well done. And for some reason, I got the biggest kick out of the announcment of the countries...the woman doing the English announcement always seem to be trying really, really, REALLY, hard.

CNBC is starting live coverage now.

First up is going to be rowing apparently, and it will be live.

Apparently they're going for the next 14 hours with most of that time being live.

Yeah, the opening coverage was shitty, but you gotta love the around the clock coverage.

Rowing at 2am :)

Cube Man is the shit.

Commercial, wow, actually 7 minutes between commercials this time.
2:17

Apparently, they're going with 2 minute breaks. Not..too bad...yet.

This timeline rox.
2:19 back from commercial.

YOU DA MAN SOPHOCLES!

Some of these guys look like they've been in makeup since June.

This is fun. Olympic Opening Ceremonies rock

Hey, were you thinking right when the pregnant lady was going out into the water, that Bob was about to say "and we will be right back"?

I was thinking more along the lines of...holy shit this woman is gonna give birth on TV...o_O!

Also, does any country have ONE athlete? I'd love to see that. I'd root for that guy to win.

Also, coming up next on CNBC (4 am) is Sharpshooting. It sounds like they are showing the finals live, so these will be the first medals awarded.

I normally have no interest in opening ceremonies but the timeline thing was pretty damn cool. Not just an hour of dull incredibly interprative modern dance numbers like normal, but a really elaborate theatre-style presentation. Beats the hell out of every other opening ceremony just for that.

Yes. And they screwed up the only potentially good thing to come out of this year's Olympics by making DJ Tiësto's set almost impossible to hear.
