So we may get our first reading of what is generally considered the "full employment" by the Fed as a rate of 5 to 5.2% tomorrow. The Romney Recovery has been going really well.

Not once have we ever met the statutory requirement have we? I still can't figure out who we're supposed to jail for this.

EDIT:
The Act set specific numerical goals for the President to attain. By 1983, unemployment rates should be not more than 3% for persons aged 20 or over and not more than 4% for persons aged 16 or over, and inflation rates should not be over 4%. By 1988, inflation rates should be 0%.
whoops

also lol:
Public Law 101-508, attached to the Pollution Prevention Act, required the Economic Report to the President to be submitted within twenty days after the start of the session of Congress instead of within ten days after the submission of the annual budget.

Okay, it seems like #3 and #6 would almost inherently contradict. Especially with #2 sitting there. Who wrote this thing?!?

Hubert Horatio Hornblower* was an overrated Senator. I said it. I stand by it.

So you're saying we should jail George P. Schultz and James Baker? (I went through like ten Reagan cabinet members before I found two still alive. Bonus at it being these assholes.)

I'm okay with this.

Heavens no. Go after his children.
Real or adopted?

Actually nevermind. I'd love to have Ron Reagan and Michael Reagan in the same cell together.

It could be a special Lockup episode when MSNBC finally realizes this whole politics thing is a passing fad and they just go to 24/7 Lockup/etc.

What I find interesting is that in 2011 Perry and Romney are both the same type of candidate, in a way. They're both establishment picks with good political history. One of the two ended up winning largely because the other one fucked up in an embarrassing and colossal way in front of everyone.

This year Trump and Carson are sort of the same kind of candidate, too. They're non-politician anti-establishment picks. Now if we're using 2011 as the cautionary tale that Trump could melt down, that's fine, but Trump's votes will likely go somewhere similar much like Perry's going to Romney.

At this point I personally feel like Carson has a much better chance of fucking up in a similar way Perry did. Trump seems to be able to roll with those punches pretty easily.

Trump + Carson + Cruz is already above 50% in the huffpost average. The anti-establishment is clearly much stronger this time around.

It almost seems like the establishment's best shot is coalescing around a single guy while letting the anti-establishment split the vote, but I feel like the establishment is in the worst spot for doing that. It seems like a non-politician like Carson would give up fairly easily, and Trump and Cruz are too friendly to drag the other down with them, but what would it take for Bush, Walker, or Rubio to step down?

Rubio+Walker+Jeb! are rocking polling results of less than 20% combined right now so I don't even know if combining their powers to form one super establishment candidate would even work right now.

Is Walker an establishment candidate? The Koch's aren't exactly the GOP establishment, they backed many of the Tea Party insurgent primary challengers.

So who is the establishment? I've been thinking about this more and more after reading this old piece on Dean's campaign: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0401.confessore.html

I mean there is obviously an establishment in terms of people in positions and so on, but I'm not sure there's an establishment that can go "alright, Perry and Romney, those are our guys, line up the money...oh shit...'oops'? Romney it is then!"

W. Bush had the old Bush establishment there from his father's ties. As noted above via Reagan, these people are dead or are people like Rumsfeld and Cheney, who don't even really have much sway in GOP circles. Those people aren't left for Jeb! in a way that he can send them out to convince people other than people who would already support him*. He doesn't have like a bundle of Iowa old hands who can go in and twist arms and so on. Bachmann and Santorum (and to some extent 2008) showed that state is in utter chaos in terms of who the actual power brokers are in it.

*And those type of people are hanging back and waiting to see how things shake out since Jeb! has never had the consistent chunk of the polling Romney had.

Rubio can probably be removed from the race by promissing him a VP seat (which, if youre not named Bush, is something that youd want to do anyway to theoretically increase hispanic appeal). The others... Thats a bit tougher.

Six months ago everyone thought the Republican base had no appetite for anyone who wasn't a Governor this time around, but now they seem to have no appetite for anyone who holds elected office.

Did y'all see this? Chris Christie gets upset at a woman for quoting him to him on the subject of climate change.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/chris-christie-town-hall-climate_55e7243be4b0b7a9633b2889

"The climate's been changing forever, and it will always continue to change," said Christie at an Aug. 4 event in Manchester, New Hampshire, which was captured on video. "Does human activity contribute to it? Of course it does. We all contribute to it in one way or the other. By breathing we contribute to it."

At an Aug. 29 event in Laconia, New Hampshire, a young woman volunteering with the group NextGen Climate asked Christie to clarify those comments: "Do you really believe that humans exhaling carbon dioxide contributes to climate change?"

"Give me my microphone back," Christie responded with annoyance.

"I really care about this subject," she responded.

"I know you really care about this subject, but you know what, the first thing you need to do is not be wrong, and not quote me incorrectly. I never said that humans contribute to climate change by breathing," Christie said.

"I never said it," he continued when she reminded him of the date and event. "Were you there?"

She confirmed that she was there and that she heard him say it.

"Then you need to clean out your ears, young lady," the candidate replied. "I never said that humans contribute to climate by breathing. Ridiculous statement. I never said that."

True. I know polls will change as time goes on, but it seems like there a much bigger lead for team anti-establishment than they're given credit for. Team anti-establishment vs team establishment probably have a similar insurmountable gap that Hillary has over Sanders.

Maybe there's more faith in big money and endorsements turning things around better than Sanders ever could, but I'm not so sure. At some point you might see big money and endorsements herding toward Trump in order to get on his good side.

So they invited Lincoln Chafee to the first Democratic debate. In 13 of the last 20 national polls he's hit 0% or less. Only twice since May has he gone over 1% in any poll.

Let's say Biden enters the race two weeks from now.

Do they kick out Chafee or figure "we've got all these fucking podiums because of the GOP, leave him in, why not? We can do six on stage and just ignore two of them. Stick em on the ends and frame them out in all the shots."

benjipwns

More important question, if Chafee was running as a Republican would he be outpolling Pataki and/or Jindal?

(Both at 0.2% in RCP average, Chafee is at 0.2% on the D side if you kick out the Rasmussen poll that gave him 2%. 0.6% otherwise.)

And he ran for President or VP like six times. C'mon son.

I'm gonna need to start seeing some crosstabs on these Trump general election polls because I can't conceivably understand how a candidate that is doing so poorly with hispanics is doing better than guys like Rubio and Bush.

He would have to be winning the white vote in ridiculous ways. And that's not even taking into account women voters.

Those are better criticisms then what you started with. Nobody is perfect, especially removed from the climate of the era they lived, with the benefit of 60 years of hindsight. Nevertheless, these errors of judgement (which you could find for almost any politician) do not invalidate a long and fruitful career. Reagan and jfk are around but humphrey is overrated, pfft

It's all about Candidate Butt Stuff.

What's Butt Stuff's qualifications? Crunch is at least a Captain, so he has some military experience and discipline, maybe he even spent some time abroad. As head of state Queen Elsa Ice has foreign policy experience and would surely know how to carry herself at foreign summits.

And now Trump has chimed-in on the whole license issue:
Donald Trump on Kim Davis: "The Supreme Court Has Ruled"

“Well look — the decision came down from the Supreme Court … so I’m a believer in both sides of the picture,” Mr. Trump said Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “I would say the simple answer is let her clerks do it. Now, from what I understand, she’s not letting her clerks do it, either.” ..

“The other simple answer is rather than going through this, [because] it’s really a very, very sticky situation, a terrible situation — 30 miles away they have other places, they have many other places where you get licensed, and you have them actually quite nearby,” Mr. Trump said. “That’s another alternative. I hate to see her being put in jail. I understand what they’re doing. It would be certainly nice if she didn’t do it, but other people in her office do it but from what I understand she won’t allow other people in her office to do it.” ..

“You have to go with it,” Mr. Trump said. “The decision’s been made, and that is the law of the land.”

“She can take a pass and let somebody else in the office do it in terms of religious, so you know, it’s a very … tough situation, but we are a nation, as I said yesterday, we’re a nation of laws,” he said. “And I was talking about borders and I was talking about other things, but you know, it applies to this, also, and the Supreme Court has ruled. It would be nice to have other people in her office do what they have to do.”

I could see this being the first big issue where the Breitbarters and Freepers have a major disagreement with him. How they handle it is going to be very interesting.

He's being pretty reasonable about it, IMO. The fact that the clerks couldn't even do it was ridiculous.

Agreed. It's going to stick out like a sore thumb if Cruz or Carson doesn't attack him on this, if given an opportunity. If it were Jeb as the frontrunner taking this position, I suspect that the howling from candidates on the right would be deafening.

...

Meanwhile, the jobs report isn't too bad. Missed the headliner nonfarm payroll estimates, but revisions and trends look good and the unemployment rate is now down to 5.1%.

If unemployment ever goes under 5%, Obama and the Democrats need to shout it from the rooftops. LOUDLY. Go back and watch some highlight reel footage of Bill Clinton in the 90s - the man bragged incessantly about the economy. He'd be in the middle of a fluff piece and find a way to sneak in a statbrag or two.

This is fabulous! It should be covered by every news outlet, especially after what snake Cruz and loser-guy Paul said last night. Nice to see some differentiation.

When normal politicians poll terribly this is the result.

People may think Trump is a huge ass but they think he'll do something.

Also the Dems are really holding their fire against Trump at the moment. Hillary's barely attacked him and Obama and the Big Dawg have been quiet.
