RETRO'S CANNED SONIC POST:
Sonic was never about speed, it's about momentum. Every game since the series made the transition to 3-D has made that mistake though. Sonic is not a roller coaster, he's a pinball (you'd think having a whole fucking game built on that premise would make it obvious...) . You don't just rev him up and press forward until you beat the level (outside of the intro stages and later iterations); you have to maintain that momentum by avoiding obstacles because the more divergent routes through the levels require you have enough speed to get into them. You're meant to launch out of a half-pipe, see something you never noticed before and try to get enough speed to make it up there, not just pop a sick flip, shout "GOTTA GO FAST!" before grinding on a rail for reasons. Sonic, for the most part, is about memorizing / anticipating things that stop / slow you so you can avoid them, granting access to more rewarding / safer routes.
Also; Castlevania > Mario > Sonic. Come at me, I got Castlevania posts for daaaaaaays.
RETRO'S OBLIGATORY(?) SEMI ON-TOPIC POST:
Samantha Bee's show has grown on me a lot. Comedy Central needs to ditch Trevor Noah and break some glass ceilings of their own.
