also Josh Marshall is my favorite liberal blogger but he has cringey internet joke tendencies, the kind you might expect from a 50-year-old who is trying to stay internet-young-at-heart. (He still liberally sprinkles his posts with "derp" and changed his Twitter avatar to Kermit amidst peak alt-right Pepe.)

So I could see him deliberately linking to Pornhub to make some kind of hi-larious internet-points joke except I have no idea how the link relates to the retweet he claims to be referencing

It's amazing how many people are retconning history and blaming the CIA or other intelligence agencies for the Iraq war. What actually happened is the Bush administration tasked the US intelligence community to generate intelligence reports justifying regime change in Iraq for WMDs and links to Al-Qaeda. After they came back with "we got nothing", Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz created their own intelligence unit called the "Office of Special Plans" which produced war propaganda in direct contradiction to the US intelligence community's assessments. How the fuck is it that people don't know this?

Because that sounds criminal and Bush and Co. never went to jail.

Proud to be thanked a Happy New Year by the PEOTUS.

Wikileaks has a poll about what Obama will be remembered for.

1. Syria/Yemen/Libya/ISIS
2. Snowden/Assange/Manning
3. Brexit/refugees/Ukraine
4. Trump

This is a terrible poll made by terrible people, but I'm just so confused at option 3.

.... What do those things have to do with each other?

Well I suppose that's one way to start the new year off.

I'm going to remain optimistic and hope he somehow gets impeached before 2017 is out.

I forgot Obama even spoke out against Brexit. Like heck anyone will remember that.

Never mind.

It's amazing how many people are pretending the DNC leaks included anything other than standard office gossip. Confirmation bias is really a thing y'all.

That tweet, haha.

Just when I think Trump can't further embody the dark side of the American id, he finds a way.

America's spirit animal is a teenage bully from an 80s afterschool special.

Well, less than a quarter of America's spirit animal. But half of the country are the cafeteria bystanders who get told in the end "if you're not part of the solution..."

Have we talked about Kander's OpEd in Huffington Post? Because it's pretty good.

I feel like this is exactly what we were doing for Hillary's campaign. The common complaint republican voters give is that the Dem party was not focusing on the "average American." So instead of trying to broaden the message we are going to double down on it? And he thinks that the voters would respect your views even if they disagree with them? He thinks they would listen if the candidate truly believes in making the country better?

I'm sorry, but he's wrong. Republicans voters hate Dems and vice versa more than ever in today's world. Everything is politicalized and fake news has run rampant as propaganda. We are truly lost.

Uh, I think a pretty clear problem with Hillary was that a ton of people (wrongfully) viewed her as corrupt or untrustworthy. And that came from both the left and the right, unfortunately. Like it or not, that was a big factor this election.

Also, not sure where you got the idea that he doesn't want to broaden the message. That's the opposite of what he was arguing. A key quote the article highlights is "Let's start by being unafraid to make our argument to everyone."

And they viewed her as untrustworthy due to false news and other bullshit the Republican news basis prompted up. The left didn't help either considering half of them wanted a different candidate. And what can they do to broaden the message anymore? What's an issue that will appeal to the working white population?

No, they viewed her as untrustworthy because of the past 20+ years of the Republican Party characterizing her and her husband as that. It happened long before fake news became as prevalent as it was. The reality is that Hillary was perceived as dishonest, untrustworthy, and corrupt, which makes it hard for some voters to think she tried truly cares about them.

There's plenty in the Democratic Party message that can appeal to the white working class (minimum wage, health care, education). Problem is that many Democrats just wrote these voters off - why should we be surprised that they went to the only people that paid attention to them? Democrats have won some of these voters in the past - some even in this election. There's no reason it can't happen again.

But Kander makes an important point in that we should not and can not abandon other Democratic issues - things like LGBT rights, criminal justice reform, health care, etc.

If you want to mope around and act like things are hopeless, go ahead. It's not healthy nor productive, but if it works for you then that's fine.

Except if the "fake news" was working, then why does Obama have such a high approval rating right now?

The GOP has been attacking Hillary for decades now, with the most intense attacking being the last 4 years because everyone knew that Hillary would go for the 2016 nomination.

Now Hillary is out of the picture and, unless the GOP are psychic enough to predict the 2020 nominee, the GOP isn't going to have enough time to paint a negative picture for the 2020 nominee.

Are Dems and liberals even going to have a primary in 2020 or will they be too busy settling scores over Sanders and Clinton?

The 2020 dem primaries are probably going to be as packed as the 2016 GOP primaries. So many democrats that want a shot at beating Trump:

- Corey Booker
- Elizabeth Warren
- Catherine Cortez-Masto
- Kamala Harris
- Jason Kander
- Al Franken

And it'll be like the 2016 and 2012 GOP primaries where a lot of the focus will be on how much POTUS sucks.

If it's Sanders or Biden, they'll have plenty of material to work on.

However, with Uncle Joe, I think it will all just bounce off.

Hopefully Sanders doesn't actually try to run again. He and Biden are too old.

Now Harris and Cortez-Masto are New enough that the GOP won't be able to create a narrative on them.

Care to prove differently?

Firstly, let me correct myself: when I read "DNC leak," I took that to mean what was leaked from the DNC, not who was hacked (Podesta vs. a DNC member).

So I've already been through this song and dance here; I'm not sure what I'm "proving."

Finished all of my Ph.D. applications. Hopefully will be starting a Ph.D. in Economics at one of these schools next fall...

MIT
Princeton
Stanford
UCLA
Michigan
UCSD
Cornell
Texas
Rochester
Virginia
MSU
Pittsburgh

So many applications to schools that aren't useful politically, I'm sorry D:

Hopefully some interesting political work going on in each area though.

Yikes. I only applied to like 4 schools. I should probably apply to some more.

Good luck.

Let me rephrase then: If you're not comfortable that a poster labeled the leaks as "standard office gossip," well, why are you uncomfortable with that label?

Why apply to more? Scattershot is not the way to apply to universities. Pick the few best suited to you, focus your energy and time on those. Additional applications beyond getting into one of your top three is just wasting time and money on applications.

Now, if you don't have a great shot at your top three, and you are hoping somone surprises in the scattershot, let's you in and it will just be an adventure from there go for it. But there is nothing wrong with only applying to a handful of schools and you shouldn't feel bad.

I applied to and got into one of my top graduate schools twice but had to back out when they offered no aid and it was going to put me 100k in debt over 2.5 years.

The path not taken I suppose...

Well. I was already kind of thinking I needed to retake the GRE because I think my application is kind of weak. But then I also didn't apply to as many schools as other guy here did. So I think I should retake it and then also apply to maybe four more schools or so.

I don't know what I'm doing tbh. I can't really risk not getting into any programs though; it's not like I have a job lined up or anything :/

Oh yeah. I overlooked the DNC part.

Still, I'm not too comfortable with people downplaying it as "standard office gossip" just because one side got caught.

That's exactly what it was. Don't let those pesky facts get in the way of your delusions though.

Because people in a position of power were showing favoritism. This wasn't Sally talking about Cindy's hairdo and how it would affect her promotion. This was Cindy's boss talking about her hairdo and how it would affect her promotion.

Nobody cares what Hillary's camp said about Sanders (or vice versa). But the DNC's involvement is obviously much different than "standard office gossip."

So, are people at the DNC not allowed to have a favorite?
If not, are you in favor of prosecuting people for thought crimes?

After all, for the minor things in the email, none of it, with the exception of Donna leaking two obvious debate questions, amounted to any actual actions taken to favor a canidate.
