You better not look into my finances, which are stored in a bank that has been fined for Russian money laundering in the past.

YOU BETTER NOT, MUELLER!

Dems have a difficult but viable path to the Senate majority now.

Hold all seats + NV + AZ + AZ

But then there's an election in Nov 2018 to fill out the rest of McCain's term.

The silver lining in all of this is that if Democrats do get a slim majority, they could block any SCOTUS nominations from Trump for the next two years until 2020. If something does happen to McCain, I wonder what Justice Kennedy will do, especially since it looks like he's hanging on for another year or so.

Also it's telling that the president doesn't know it's not the AGs job to protect the president. If anything it's his job to protect the presidency from the president if necessary.

Why would McCain retiring matter to Kennedy?

I thought they removed the tumor. Did it spread/grow?
The surgery was for a blood clot. They probably found the cancer in the process but that's just my speculation.

Edit: now CNN says the surgery removed a tumor and that's when they found the cancer.

I think they removed a clot from his eye but found the tumor while doing a scan for the eye (prob a CT scan? idk).

Brain cancer, especially vicious brain cancer like glioblastoma, can be hell to treat because there are relatively few chemo drugs that cross the blood-brain barrier, and fucking around with the brain invites all sorts of unintended side effects.

Combine that with the decreased physiologic reserve one has at age 80, and... yeah, McCain would be highly anomalous to make it through this.

I bet John McCain is a model patient, though.

http://www.abta.org/brain-tumor-information/types-of-tumors/glioblastoma.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/

Glioblastomas (GBM) are tumors that arise from astrocytes—the star-shaped cells that make up the ”glue-like," or supportive tissue of the brain. These tumors are usually highly malignant (cancerous) because the cells reproduce quickly and they are supported by a large network of blood vessels.

Also the above. Hard to treat, high blood flow, malignant. Super aggressive, spread quickly.

McCain probably has very little time left. Better for him to just enjoy the rest of his days with his family. I do regret making fun of his recent behavior now knowing what was going on.

Senate majority is still fucked for Dems, and instead of preying on his potentially vacant seat, Dems would be better off finding out how to run better elections for House and Senate races next year

I think McCain's (if he resigns) open seat can definitely be won. Got to turn out the Latino vote. Democrats have got to crack that code somehow. Recreate Reid's machine in AZ.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
That's pretty much due entirely to wanting to make sure healthcare got done, it was his signature issue.

If I'm Mueller I'm calling up my #2 and saying that's the next place we're gonna look.

The funny thing is I'm certain Mueller et al., have been investigating these already.

There are like two Senate pickup opportunities next year without McCain's retirement. How is "preying on his potentially vacant seat" detrimental to "running better elections for House and Senate races"?

Reid's machine is only really possible because of Vegas and it's outsized voting power to the rest of the state, and the monoeconomy of the casinos making it easy to turn out votes via unions and other workers.

If he resigns before the election, doesn't the Republican governor of Arizon pick who to fill the seat with?

That's what happened in SC after Jim Demented left to join Heritage Foundation and Tim Scott took his place.

This is symptomatic of Trump in multiple ways.

There is just so much idiocy packed into this interview.

First, the paranoia. Everyone is out to get him. Sessions, Rosenstein, Comey, Mueller -- he even throws darts at his nominee to head the FBI. He doesn't have a good word to say about anyone in federal law enforcement leadership.

Second, the ignorance. He just makes up reasons to criticize people. They're nonsensical. But in his head, they make sense, so he runs with them. The job of the Attorney General is not to shield the President from investigation. But in Trump's pea-brain, he see the AG as his personal lackey.

In any event, some free legal advice for Trump: Obstruction of Justice requires intent. Giving interviews like this, where you all but say you appointed and fired people in order to frustrate a federal investigation, will really help the people who are looking to prosecute you. You might want to maybe not do that any more.

What percentage of this administration's crises have come from Trump being an idiot who can't think things through? 80%? 99%?

Yea, but the replacement would be running with a year of experience. He'd essentially be a nobody.

Hat tip to the OT thread on the Times interview but:

Big German Bank, Key to Trump’s Finances, Faces New Scrutiny: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/19/...umps-finances-faces-new-scrutiny.html?mcubz=1

Those German shredders can't whir fast enough.

Saying "blood clot" over the weekend when it might have been a known tumor already sounds a polite PR way of saying they were waiting for more info before saying anything else, honestly. Otherwise it's arguably pretty lucky they went in for one thing and found the other before it was too late to treat.
Does Volkswagen agree? ;-)
That's only diesel shredders.

I work for a cancer charity, and John McCain was a particular enemy of ours, because there are funds from the Department of Defense that are line-item funding for specific disease research (unlike the NIH or CDC which is a big ol' bucket), so we push hard on it every year because it guarantees that our cancer specifically gets a certain amount of money annually.

McCain, like clockwork every year, adds language to the NDAA that tries to scrap this funding because it "doesn't help soldiers in the field." It's been defeated, but it's a risk we have to face every year.

I've lost relatives to cancer (and seen others struggle to get to survivor status). My dad's in chemo for Chronic Lymphocyte Leukemia right now (don't worry, they caught it early). Wouldn't wish it on anyone. But there is still an irony there.

Is primarying from the right even an effective threat in the age of Trump? I'm not so sure. Really don't think Flake et al should really fear a loss is they were met with a primary challenge.

lololol Steve King pleading for Trump to keep his fellow racist in power

Steve King @SteveKingIA

@RealDonaldTrump No one in America can match the excellence of @JeffSessions as Attorney General. Trump agenda would be crippled w\o him.

I'm just saying that at this stage it's premature and just disrespectful to immediately pounce on the prospect of picking up his seat in the event he would step down or die and it doesn't do anything to help Democrats overall heading into the midterms.

Wishing for something to break your way because someone is dying isn't a good strategy.

There is no special election for Senator in AZ, Governor appointed, same party as retiring senator.

NYT is working on putting up the interview transcript.
TRUMP: He said I said “hope” — “I hope you can treat Flynn good” or something like that. I didn’t say anything.

But even if he did — like I said at the news conference on the, you know, Rose Garden — even if I did, that’s not — other people go a step further. I could have ended that whole thing just by saying — they say it can’t be obstruction because you can say: “It’s ended. It’s over. Period.”
...

TRUMP: No, I think that’s a violation. Look, this is about Russia. So I think if he wants to go, my finances are extremely good, my company is an unbelievably successful company. And actually, when I do my filings, peoples say, “Man.” People have no idea how successful this is. It’s a great company. But I don’t even think about the company anymore. I think about this. ’Cause one thing, when you do this, companies seem very trivial. O.K.? I really mean that. They seem very trivial. But I have no income from Russia. I don’t do business with Russia. The gentleman that you mentioned, with his son, two nice people. But basically, they brought the Miss Universe pageant to Russia to open up, you know, one of their jobs. Perhaps the convention center where it was held. It was a nice evening, and I left. I left, you know, I left Moscow. It wasn’t Moscow, it was outside of Moscow.
LOL

TRUMP: Peter, that’s all I did, was make those speeches about her. … I don’t think I added anything much different than I had been doing. … I’ve made some very strong speeches about the corrupt emails. The 33,000 emails being deleted and bleached, and all of the things she was doing. I would make those speeches routinely. … There wasn’t much I could say about Hillary Clinton that was worse than what I was already saying.

HABERMAN: [laughs] I’m sorry.

TRUMP: I mean, I was talking about, she deleted and bleached, which nobody does because of the cost. How she got away with that one, I have no idea. 33,000 emails. I talked about the back of the plane, I talked about the uranium deal, I talked about the speech that Russia gave Clinton — $500,000 while she was secretary of state — the husband. I talked about the back of the plane — honestly, Peter, I mean, unless somebody said that she shot somebody in the back, there wasn’t much I could add to my repertoire.
NYT reporter straight up laughed at his response. Beautiful.

Did you know bleaching emails is enormously expensive?!

Crazies... or racists? Because the negative reaction I hear from the folks in the background there clearly sound like the shocked gasps of racists.

Or are they one in the same?

Same thing. I meant the people that lap up fake news like it's water.

Right, I think i just misunderstood his point. Sure, nobody's gonna do anything till he announces his retirement, that would be dumb.
It's not a matter of doing per se right now but a matter of mentality.

Because I know lots of people all over are going to foam at the mouth over him dying and maybe picking up his seat. It's okay to be competitive when the time comes, but let's not get too excited right now.
