[Rumor] Playstation 6 - Mark Cerny is back as PS6 Development Starts

Reverse groomer.
is anyone surprised? that's kind of how it is with these consoles
console comes out, 2-3 years after launch they're immediately at work on the next gen system

Pro is just an excuse not to optimize for base system.
Devs don't even have time to train and optimize for base system because it takes 5-8 years to make a game. They target ps5 and maybe PRO or 6 will come out before they finish.
In the past, they could release 3-5 games on ps3 and learn how to optimize with each game. Compare uc3 to uc1.
edit: we can do 4k60 now. We always could. It's not a matter of "only pro will make it possible". With this mindset, the chase never ends
The chase never does end

Keep giving me stronger machines every 4-5 years, don't make me keep the same machine for 8+ years

I mean after the matrix demo what do you expect? , a magical remastered or a God send cod game like never seen before? You know games aren't even gonna look like the matrix demo , ps6 is just another expensive piece of of tech and investors aren't gonna try making something new , therfore, technically speaking, same stuff like buying another phone.

Sure I can see that but it's a big draw for me to have this "safe space" machine for 6-8 years.
If we cut that to 5-6 then it gets a bit tight for devs and games to saturate the system but it is doable... but adding pro in the middle of that 5-6 is stretching my patience lol

Imagine the ps6 with 3dvcache on the cpu. Mmmm… no excuse for minimum 60fps next gen.
60fps is not everything. I will still take 30 or 40 with breathtaking graphics.
cpu is not a 30fps limiting factor now. It is a 60fps limiting factor. It is sometimes hard to hit 120fps because of cpu in ps5. Not 60.
It's all gpu. No amound of 3d cache would make sure games are 60fps lol.

Devs need to not be lazy and when they do 30 and 40fps modes, make them right and not this terrible, high input lag vsynced crap. Do what uncharted 4 did or bloodborne. Not 30fps in demons souls.
I think terrible 30fps with bad motion blur is the reason why people hate 30fps so much. Nobody cared with uncharted 4 and bloodborne because it was low input lag 30 and with very good motion blur.
Bloodborne is 75ms FASTER to control than demons 30fps on ps5. imagine that

PS6 in 2028 is a good bet.
They nailed it with SSD tech with the IO Complex.

Upscaling techniques are pretty solid at the moment and would naturally improve by time the PS6 is released.

Raytracing is the only thing that needs work. This will most likely be the main thing they'll work on, just like with the SSD in the PS5.

I think RT management is done on the CPU, so I assume they'll have something similar to the IO Complex in the PS5 with co-processors. RT Complex maybe?

PS5 (and Series) aimed for solving the CPU bottleneck and going all in on SSD. Both of those features were clearly the weakest links of the previous gen, so that makes sense.

Now that we have well rounded consoles, what in the world could the next gen have to improve on, other than the usual "bigger numbers across the board"? Because if that's the case, why not just have a PS5 Pro and keep this train rolling?
Well, data management is now nailed and unrestricted (they can basically move any amount of usable data on the fly), so we can espect advancements towards a more complete usage of Ray tracing (which will gradually subsitute any prebacked lighting until all lighting will be dynamic and physically correct), stacked RAM tech, and maybe dedicated AI processors, a thing that would finally open the possibility to have proper neural grids AIs on large amounts of NPCs (Sophy on GT7 is one, but it's limited to four drivers due to the heavy burden on CPU).

Dude… we all know you’ll take 30-40fps. I’m sure there are people who also enjoy gaming on black and white TVs.

At some point, the industry needs to move forward. Sample and hold TVs make 30fps look like dogshit. I’ll be glad when we leave the dark age of 30fps behind, especially as high framerate tv panels become more common.

We had 180hz crts back in the late 90s.
You will understand it's not all about fps once you grow up.... to ignore this stuff.
30 is fine once it's done well. Especially if i's pushing graphics.
Played half of Hogwarts in 30 and another half in 40fps modes. It is fine in both. Switched to 60fps after finishing main quest just to check it out. blurry but also got used to it.
my point being - If done well, it's ok and you should not put HARD LIMITS on yourself. What kind of gamer you are if you ignore 30fps and past 20 years of gaming saying it is unplayable and compare it to black and white tv. It's just idiotic

You’re right- its not all about framerates. Its about balance- and thats where 30fps swings far too much to the image quality side. Images look good until you pan the camera, then it gets gross.

Grow up? Bruh i’m closer to 40 than 30 lol

I am just toying with you lol. I am 34 myself :p
30fps is brutal on oled. I agree on that.... but good motion blur really helps.
Switching to 30 in hogwarts is brutal but you play for 30 minutes and forget about it. I personally have easier time getting used to 30 rather than blurry image.

But I only get used to 30 if it's not a fucking nightmare like demons souls 30fps. Laggy and slow. And only if motion blur is good enough to reduce oled 30fps judder.
30fps looks quite a lot worse on oled than lcd just by itself.

I mean, he said he started working on PS5 right after the launch of PS4 so if anything I’d be surprised it took this long.

Man I hate 30fps so much that I built a 7900xt PC as a middle finger to it. Any game on ps5 that is 30fps that I want is immediately bought on PC lol

Hopefully some x3D stacked cache and better ray tracing next time, along with pcie 5.0!
I'm pretty sure these are guaranteed. Though, considering the PS6 won't be out til ~2027/28, I think we're looking at PCIE6/7, instead of just 5. I'm guessing 32GB of GDDR7/8 for RAM. And an 8 core Zen5/6 CPU and a 75Tflops+ RDNA5/6 APU, using 3nm.

It'll be a beast.

30fps looks like shit and imo it's frankly ridiculous that we still haven't moved on from it.

Frame rates aren't like resolution or other graphical features where there's this constant need for improvement. If we just take the hit on fidelity for ONE generation and have the new standard being 60, then all subsequent leaps can be based on fidelity. I'd agree if there was then a push for 120fps - that seems like a complete luxury to me. But 30 vs 60 is a huge difference.

Whether or not anything in this video is true, obviously Sony began development of the PS6 as soon as or even before PS5 launched. That's how its always worked.
Yes and no.
Obviously on a very high level they had to make a few decisions pretty early.

I could very well Imagine that after the launch Sony Management had a meeting and discussing if they want to make another consoles and if yes how mich buget are we going to spent on the preproduction of the next generation. The pre production could also include things like market and viability research, also what kind of console should it be, what kind of techs are in developtment (hardware and software wise) and so on.

I would'nt be surprised if Mark Cerny was "off duty" for a while now taking his time to speak with different people in the HW industry about projections of feasable future tech. Catching up on new literature/patents/studys and so on. Doing stuff he simply wants to do and thus learning new things and forming first ideas.

Maybe he just recently came back to really start on designing what the next console should be like, writing first concepts, proposing what kind of R&D needs to be done and so on and on.

We moved. it is a choice now.
And you are showing ignorance and lack of empathy if you think 30fps is unplayable. It is good. Play for 15 minutes and you forget about it for the most part.
If you can't comprehend that 30fps is fine for many people and people just don't give a shit, then I have no idea what to tell you.

Of course 60 is better. of course 240hz is better. Of course 4k is better but this is 200watt, 500$ console. There are sacrifices.... and we still have a choice this gen. If only 30fps support was not so shite in most titles.
edit: Don't think I am some psycho. I game mostly 60 this gen too. I only switch to 30 or 40 when there is really big 60 downgrade

I didn't say it was unplayable - after all I've put up with it, and worse, for over 25 years now - but it does look shit and is a fundamental sacrifice given how the human eye processes motion. As soon as things on screen start moving it's basically impossible to focus on them.

I'm happy for there to be a choice for people who want extra 'fidelity', just so long as the performance modes get a properly balanced experience.

If it follows a silicon like lead time, starting now would only bear fruit in 4-5 years. So 2027, 2028 maybe. Which about lines up with what they said. So even if they're getting going now this would be a longer console generation, which makes sense as 2.4 years in it's not nearly feeling tapped out with the weirdness of development during covid.

I feel no need for a Pro yet either, at earliest maybe 2024 which would be set midway in the console life. But personally I'd be content for developers to just keep trying to optimize for these base consoles.

I don't know why you think the PS5 hasn't been used. We have 4K/1800p/1440p games at 60 FPS, we have extremely fast loading times, higher detail, better textures. I mean, I used to think the same, but the biggest change in how graphics engines work is the addition of ray tracing, and these machines are not really built for it, the performance simply isn't there. In terms of Nanite, The Matrix demo in UE5 looked incredible, but it struggled to even keep 30 FPS. It seems the horsepower for some new way of rendering games just isn't there.

I would much rather get higher performance now if it is possible than stick to just the PS5 because of hurt feelings of some hardcore fans. I don't even know why you feel a PS5 PRO would make devs "lazy", any game on PS would see the great majority of its sales on the base console, that would never happen.
