Someone on Reddit made a 30fps vs 60fps site.

How many frames is real life? I'd wager its far less than 60 and closer to 30

When I look around things seem a lot slower than that video on the left

It's a pretty obvious difference. For those saying they can't see the difference, I have to wonder:

- Have you let them completely load?
- Does your screen output at 60hz or more?
- If you are on a mobile, the browser may not be displaying them correctly?
- Are you a troll?

If none of those apply, there might be a genuine problem you should get checked with your setup or a problem with your eyes so see a optometrist

You forgot one thing but I fixed it.

Difference is subtle on Dirt, more profound in Battlefield. For all the people who are saying "i can't believe some of you can't tell the difference". How would you feel if a musician said the same because you can't tell the difference between two notes?

inadequate.

I can usually see a difference pretty easily, but I have to say these examples don't seem as stark to me. I think my eyes are playing tricks on me because the 2 comparisons are so close together.

Unless we're all actors and life is just one big film in the sky, real life is 0 fps. Because there are no frames.

Why would you need above 60fps? Not only does it ruin the experience, it'll make everything too fast. Heck, any FF character will be able to race Sonic with 120fps.

I don't know whether these posts are serious or not anymore :/

30 fps vs 60 fps is pretty much a joke on GAF at this point.

People act like there is this huge population on here that can't tell the difference or think that 30 fps is better than 60 fps, when in reality the argument is between those that like graphical bells and whistles better than higher framerates.

I can clearly see the difference, but I really don't care that much. I only really need 60FPS for Shooters, Fighters, and Racers (which I don't really play). Otherwise I'd rather have my graphics, AA, and effects turned up to max with 30FPS on console.

I really wish more devs would give us a choice, but I understand it probably takes more resources.

I know, I know, but 60fps feels more "game-y" to me because when I'm moving fast or am in a vehicle moving fast IRL, things don't look smooth to me - they seem blurry, scattershot, and jumpy. 60fps is way better for fast-paced games, but this idea that it's more realistic is feels wrong to me because frame rate is only one of the things that determines realism.

I don't understand how people can say 30fps feels like moving through treacle :-)

Only two I noticed a *real* difference on were the red orchestra + watch dogs. The others it didn't make a huge difference to me. In both cases I'd take 2x image quality and 30fps over 60fps though, if that were the trade-off.

Opinions, eh?

I personally feel the opposite. I would rather a game sacrifice resolution for a smoother experience. I would much prefer 720 and 60fps to 1080 and 30fps, But thats just my preference.

Red orchestra had the largest impact for me, 60 FPS looked outstanding. While I could clearly notice the difference in the others, I wasn't saddened by the 30 fps vids.

Why are these comparison videos always so poorly chosen? The more motion there is, the more obvious the difference will be. Driving a more or less straight line or running forward has very little motion (the consecutive frames tend to be quite similar to each other) and thus the difference between 30 and 60 fps will be rather small other than general smoothness.

Just pick any 3rd person game and rotate the camera quickly. The difference between 30 and 60 will be night and day.

Some people can't see a difference? :/

It gets worse. Some people can see the difference but claim that lower is better somehow

Hyperbole, most of it.

Both 30 and 60 look good. I don't mind either. 60 is prefered for everything. 30 is a good compromise when the hardware isn't able to do everything. I don't care about the frames really as long as it isn't janky.

Resolution, on the other hand...

You animate the game with delta time, not by frame.
Haha don't take my second half of comment serious. I didn't mean actual speed of the games, I meant the way the smoothness works. I tried it for a few games and I think FPS games might work out for them. Third person just doesn't seem right to me.

This is why there should be a page which does video comparisons between medium settings and maxed out settings. You'd be surprised at how small the difference is, especially compared to the difference between 30 and 60 fps.

cools site. I'm gonna guess most people will see no diff, or so little that it wont matter...wish we had some stats.

I have to agree with another poster here, 60fps looks more "cartoonish" (I don't know how to describe it, it just looks too smooth?) than the 30fps. 30fps has a cinematic feel to it. But 60fps is definitely smoother and I would take that in shooters especially.
I think it might be more accurate to say that the processing your brain does on 30fps footage makes 60fps footage look cartoonish or sped up. Because 60fps looks fine once you acclimate. 60 to 120 has a similar acclimation period. It's an interesting phenomenon and I wonder what the explanation is.

Yeah, I don't think that is the point. There are games out there that run even at less than 30fps or 20fps, that are still fantastic and playable such as Ocarina of Time and older point and click games. That isn't really at dispute. The argument is whether there is a difference at all, and there definitely is

The posts in here ARE becoming very hard to tell if serious or not

No shit, I had no idea frame-rate was so contentious. Sometimes I'll get good frames sometimes poor, but I'll always notice the difference. Maybe because I play on PC the variable frame-rate has made me pretty impassive towards it, but I've never thought of it as something worth debating or having a 'strong' (read: delusional) opinion about, it was just a compromise not an experience thing.

The difference is night and day. Although, I'll agree that sometimes 30FPS is better for that cinematic look, it took me a while to adjust to Ground Zeroes 1080p 60FPS cutscenes, it was so fluid and smooth that it felt unnatural.

It's an interesting example because sometimes people are like 'wow this is an amazing performance' by some singer and I listen and to my ears it's weak and off-key.

60 FPS is godly. Too bad developers could give a shit about gameplay.

Making something pretty and vapid is more important to "gamers"

Even though I can easily see the difference and definitely prefer 60fps to 30, I am tempted to make a similar site that puts two 30fps clips next to each other and have people go on about how much better one clip looks over the other.

It becomes incredibly obvious with the BF4 running comparison.

But in general these aren't good examples and the website loads the two clips independently at times which means it's hard to compare.

Yep.

I honestly wonder how many would do this, I'm betting at least half.

Notif.

But I'm afraid I won't see a lot of difference, I have one pretty fucked up set of eyes, unfortunately.
Don't worry. A lot of people just don't notice it. Most of my friends have no idea what frame rate their game is playing on and never questioned why it went slow mo when there is explosion. They think it's part of the game.

It may not always be visually obvious, but in 99% of 3D PC games, just walk around on 30-60FPS vs 80+, and you'll notice how much smoother it is.

Diablo 3 is a great example. Turn V-Sync on (with a 60Hz monitor), and just click to move for a minute or so. Then try 120FPS. You can easily notice how rigid it feels. But you have to put up awful screen tearing.
