What expansions do fans of CK2 and EUIV think you can't play without? Or do they matter as much as Civ expansions?

I have both games, and now would be the time to get any expansions that improve them.

Don't have EU4, but for CK2 I'd pick up the expansions (the ones that add gameplay mechanics) as well as the Ruler Designer. As for the cosmetic dlc, I'd go with the Portrait, Clothing and Shield packs. The *unit and song packs add flavor, but aren't essential. (For the record, I did pick up the unit packs I was missing, don't care about the music)

* the unit picks don't add new units, just graphics/models for the map

Speaking for CK2:

The Old Gods allows you to play as pagans and pushes the start date back to 867 from 1066. Definitely a must have and will easily double the amount of content you can access.

Charlemagne is another expansion that pushes the start date back to 769. It adds in a bunch of new cultures and overhauls the regency system. Not a must-have, but I'd get it if you're interested in playing the full timeline.

The Republic only lets you play as republics like Venice. I don't like playing them so I'm not a huge fan of it.

Legacy of Rome adds some flavor to the Byzantine Empire and lets you use Retinues, so you can have a standing army instead of just levies. It's dirt cheap, so I'd pick it up just for that.

Sunset Invasion is just a fantasy DLC where the Aztecs attack Europe.

Sword of Islam lets you play Muslim rulers. I mainly play as Christian and Pagan so I'm not a huge fan of this DLC, but if it appeals to you it certainly unlocks a bunch of new countries to play as.

Rajas of India lets you play Indian rulers. It's kind of interesting, but again I don't play as them much.

Sons of Abraham adds a lot of religious events and I believe overhauls the college of Cardinals. It also lets you play as Jewish rulers. It's a pretty cool DLC just for the flavor.

Way of Life is purely a flavor DLC. It adds a lot of events and is focused on giving a deeper roleplaying experience. It makes peacetime a bit less boring.

To summarize:

The Old Gods, Sword of Islam, Rajas of India, The Republic, and Sons of Abraham to a lesser extent give you more factions to play as. Personally, only the Old Gods is a must-have for me out of these.

Old Gods and Charlemagne push the start date back. I'd recommend both just for that alone.

Way of Life adds flavor, get it if you're seeing repeat events often.

Don't get Sunset Invasion unless you've played the game a ton.

Is it worth investing in Pinball FX tables? I've been debating in my mind for the longest whether to go Steam, or PS family (own 3 and Vita, might buy 4 in near future).

Having high scores aren't an issue because I don't think any one on my friends list plays the games.

They are good fun on any system and there really isn't anything that makes the choice of which platform to play on a deciding factor other than simply where you are comfortable playing it. I personally went with it on PC simply because it's easier to talk to the developers through the Steam community, and through Steam Family sharing, I can let kin play the titles when I am not.

If you do get the FX2 tables on Steam and want to add some people for highs cores, head over to the main SteamGAF community thread and say you are looking for people to add with the game. There is a fair number of us playing it.

Anyone with experience in Darkest Dungeon? I knew all press has been positive and I'm close to just pulling the trigger.

I like it but it's definitely in that limbo state where it's playable but clearly not finished. Not in terms of bugs or polish but content. I enjoy playing it but I'm also hesitant to play more because I don't want to burn out before it is done.

It's hard to build up a team when you know things could change with the next update.

Question about the game, how much does the
combat
detract from
the experience? I was interested in Isolation when it came out, seen that it was present, and said "nope." My interest was piqued again with this sale so checked into some stuff again, seen how
effective
the
flamethrower
was in particular, and gave another "nope."

*I'm trying to be as careful as possible with spoilers. :)

If I'm being entirely honest,
combat
in the game is better avoided. Facing
enemies/aliens
head on
with weapons of any kind
is a terrible decision.
The
flamethrower
, OP as people think it is, probably won't get you very far. In all honesty, the few times I tried using it when it was first found in game
I was dead the moment I tried. It's like using guns against them.
I found myself using it to be more of a
tactic in luring out aliens when I encountered more hostile humans about.

I suppose it ultimately depends on the difficulty you play at, too. I wouldn't let that one thing deter you from purchase. Maybe make it a bit of a difficult game and avoid use unless you deem it absolutely necessary.

I've got an extra copy of Pillars of Eternity - Kickstarter Hero Edition (Includes the base game of Pillars of Eternity. Added bonuses include the Giant Miniature Space Piglet and Gaun's Pledge pre-order items) that I'm looking to trade for Dare Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin.

PM me for trade.

Cool, thanks. Is the AI good enough where I can crank up the difficulty without running into any outright unfair situations?

The thirst is real

Congrats to all the winners!
Thank you, Tizoc! I won The Silent Age from your awesome giveaway.

My early impressions:

The Silent Age looks fantastic visually - such a beautiful and unique artstyle - and it controls wonderfully and smoothly with either a mouse or an Xbox controller if you prefer that. I usually like controller support in my games, but it's not needed for this.

It is a point and click game. You pick up objects and use them, talk to people, interact with the environment - all of the usual staples of the genre.

The game begins in 1972 and it's yet another day of work for you. You have to meet your boss, and it goes from there.

I have no idea what's happening yet, but there's obviously something going on. I really like the mysterious atmosphere and sense of foreboding.

I can't wait to find out more...

No, just be extra careful since
the aliens searches get closer to you the higher the difficulty.
Not impossible, just more difficult. Not difficult to hide from them despite this, though,
even in plain sight, crouching inside the corner of a doorway while leaning into the wall, they'll not even notice you sometimes.
It isn't as bad as The Evil Within in terms of much more scarce resources, etc, even in the higher difficulties. The real issue you'll get into with harder difficulties are the
androids. Seriously, they just soak up your bullets like they're being tickled.

Also, just so you know. Loot and the like are entirely random, no consistency in it between death and checkpoint, let alone second playthrough.

Last minute (lol) purchase I can't decide:

  • This War of Mine + Half Minute Hero 2
  • Sunless Sea
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 + DLC (I haven't played either so I figured start with 1 if I got into the series)**
  • Transistor + HMH2

**For Neptunia, one should start with the first one right?

I have $1.50, anything random worth getting? I usually end up buying one or two <$1 games each sale but nothing jumped out at me this time so I have to be missing something.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013

Get VVVVVV, it's a fun platformer with an amazing soundtrack and easy controls.

I think this is the first sale in a while where I haven't bought anything. Some tempting deals, especially The Stanley Parable and Tomb of the Necrodancer, but I'm realizing that by the time I'll get to them they will be on sale again.

Good choice but I own it from an old humble bundle, loved it.

Edit: For folks asking about The Stanley Parable, just get the free HL1 mod instead if you are really on the fence. I loved that when it first came out and jumped on the new one after playing the amazing demo and was kind of let down. It is still just as fun as the HL1 mod but it isn't all that different of a story and I feel like the HL1 mod has more variations and outcomes. I could just be remembering wrong though. The voice acting is great though so if you already played the HL1 mod and liked it just buy this and support them.

Just realized my state now forces sales tax for Steam purchases, so I'm going to have to start mentally factoring an extra 6% into the price of everything...

I don't know about Neptunia, but out of the other three I'd pick Sunless Sea.

Decided.

I'll probably end up buying it anyway.

My only regret this Steam sale was not buying War For the Overworld. T'was not meant to be.

GOG had it for half off. It's a fun game, puzzle-y and very pick-up-and-play. Makes the whole persistent kingdom element work better than it should.

Coming here for some help. I've got 6.90 USD left and I just bought the Fallout New Vegas GOTY edition or ultimate pack or whatever it is.

Looking to spend it on a game 6.90 USD or under, any hidden gems out there I should drop some sale money on? If the port of Final Fantasy 8 is good I was thinking of grabbing that.

I was so close. 2 games away from 500 now and I am spent. I guess I could have planned better to hit that goal but it was still a good sale for me.

What are the steam cards for? They're like $.10 cents or below. Don't know what they're for but I've been turning them into gems. Which I don't know what gems are for either.

the refund option is tempting..

You’ve requested a bunch of refunds recently. Please keep in mind that refunds are not a method for trying out games. If we think the refund system is being misused we’ll decline to grant future refunds.

Cards make badges, badges give you exp to level up your profile.

Gems let you make booster packs of cards where you get 3> cards for a game of your choice (if you have enough gems for it), which you also use to make cards.

Thanks for the info guys, I bought BC2, I needed a less hardcore shooter because CS:GO is making my blood pressure skyrocket.

Any other suggestion for cheap multiplayer games in general?

Btw, everyone should buy Chivalry imo, the game might not be perfect but it's so much fun and it's only 1.7 euros.

Try out Dirty Bomb, it's F2P.

The dimes add up. Sell 'em and use them to buy games.

The gems were used in a weird bidding system where games would be auctioned off based on gems. So some publisher makes a thousand copies of their game available, people bid on each game using their gems. Most gems win. If you lost, you got your gems back.

It wasn't a runaway hit so they haven't done the gem auction thing since last year. Maybe they'll do it again, who knows. The market of cards to cash to gems was pretty complicated though, and people were trying to find exploits in arbitrage, which turned off a lot of causal types.

Said I wasn't going to but I went and bought a little more. I needed a full Far Cry in my life and 4 was a great deal for the Gold version. Loving it so far and damn that thing runs near 60FPS mostly with all Ultra but Nvidia Shadows usually and SMAA. Looks pretty damn good with SMAA and I'm glad more devs are using it. Game has a shit ton LESS pop-in than 3 too which is nice. Them Nvidia soft shadows are nice but they just gank my framerate on an OC'd 970.

I'll spoiler all this, just in case, but I'm only going to address what you wrote, nothing more:

The combat in the game is handled the most appropriately it could be. The entire direction of the game makes you feel alone and vulnerable, combat included. You get very little ammo throughout. I think I had about six bullets for the first third of the game. And it's really ineffective. Against the few enemies that aren't the Alien, it takes 4-5 shots with a pistol to bring them down. It's intimidating and relentless. It's one of the few games I've played where, although you are armed with this stuff, the game is really pushing for you to avoid its use - to use it only in absolutely dire situations. There's simply no way you can approach the gameplay as anywhere close to a shooter.

So, the only weapon that'll have any effect on the Alien whatsoever is the flamethrower. Everything else it'll straight up ignore and continue to pounce. The flamethrower is a last ditch effort tool. If the alien has spotted you and charges towards you, you can use the flamethrower to periodically scare it off. It doesn't hurt it at all. It'll be enraged then though, and will relentlessly crawl in the ventilation, angry and hungry. Once again, flamethrower fuel is a scarce resource so you can only use it so often, and overuse on it will, I believe, eventually become less effective - the alien becomes used to it and will eventually start ignoring the flames altogether and pounce straight through. It's a good mechanic because instead of just dying and starting again, it kicks the situation you're in into something more relentless, where you just managed to avoid death, but now the Alien is onto you.

Basically, none of the weapons in the game empower the player or go against the tone and direction of the game. They're scarce, last ditch effort tools that may prove effective, but it's still far wiser play if you never have to use them at all. The game is brilliantly designed. It's a cohesive package in a way we rarely see in games.
