Tom Henderson: Marathon is so cooked. (Not just this but just everything I've heard).

Which doesn't make sense cause Marathon is a 30 year old Mac game that sold less than 200,000 copies back in the day. The IP doesn't mean anything to PC and console gamers, a remake or complete reboot of the IP won't flood the world of gaming with waves of nostalgia.

The original Marathon game was ported to PC and released on Steam a few months ago. The game sank without a trace (just like how Concord is doing right now)

Ive tried to play it but the 1/2 screen UI drives me crazy

Edit: specifically, I played aleph one, not the steam release

Do I misunderstand something? Isn’t cooked a good thing normally. I mean when something is not ready they say, let it cook. So cooked means it’s ready to be released today?
Sure if you leave it in the oven when it’s cooked then it gets worse.

Be an expensive fuck up if this is the case. I know that if Sony can get a fortnite then all these losses won't matter but if that is going to happen it needs to happen soon.

I need to see gameplay footage to make a call. I also don’t trust influencers who played it to be a metric if the game is good or not.

If shroud thinks a game is bad then it’s probably really good.

Do you guys think it's still on track for 2025?
Obviously yes.

They'd have cancelled it as they cancelled other PS Studios or Bungie projects if it had serious issues. Sony cleaned the house there and kept them focused on Marathon and Destiny, which means they look good enough.

Destiny 2 makes a lot of money 7 years after launch, their previous games also made a lot of money and Marathon broke records with its announcement trailer. Bungie is very successful and capable. If someone like Tom is an anti-Sony fanbody doesn't change that.

Jim direction was full of shit! He inherited a good Playstation and he started to turn it into pure shit. Now it's up to the new guys to turn the ship around.
Nah.

In his half a generation that generation has been the top grossing one, and made more profit than all the previous ones combined (and remember, with just half a generation instead of a full one). Plus SIE is in all time numbers and in a multi year trend in most areas, both the previous ones and the new ones where they are expanding. And has way more devs and dev teams (plus better dev teams) than the ones they had before he became CEO February 2019 (this is, half a year before agreeing the Insomniac acquisition).

Even if had to face the covid pandemic, console shortages, insane inflation and big hardware component prices increases that didn't allow them to apply a price cut and while Nintendo breaking their all time records.

The company was in a good state but his results are way better than the ones of his predecessors. And don't forget that in PS1 and PS2 times the biggest success of these consoles was in Europe, when he was in charge of that region at that time.

At that time no. Capcom had a market cap of 4.5bn
So basically almost twice of the $2.4B of the Bungie acquisition even if you don't add the premium paid for the Capcom acquisition, which in other big gaming acquisitions have been around 40-60% in the known ones.

So hang on.

If I were to say “they are cooking” that would be a good thing. Like they are making something awesome.

But if I say “they are cooked” … that’s bad.

So present.. good.
Past.. bad..

What about future? “They will cook” ah? What about that huh?

Oh god am I old now?

Anyway this whole situation is messed up. Shame for Bungie and their employees.

I can't say the recent GAAS disasters at Sony don't make me feel a certain hint of joy :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

The quicker this GAAS initiatives crashes and burns the quicker we can hopefully get the old single player banger Sony back.
Heads need to roll too, I believe it was Hermen who was pushing for the acquisition of Bungie...
I would also love if they abandon their pc initiative, focus on good ol' exclusives.

I agree and I’m a big PC gamer. It seems they’ve become too distracted chasing after GAAS and PC money. Normally, I’d be for them pushing the PC initiative but it seems relying on that Steam money on the side has removed the urgency to release big AAA exclusives on time or at least show them.

PlayStation games on PC aren't doing so well, except for Helldivers 2 during the launch period.

You're right. They sell a very small fraction of what they do on the consoles with the exception of Helldivers 2
Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
Returnal
Sackboy

Flopped so hard on PC.

PlayStation really need to refocus on their core audience and start announcing games; they've been so focused on gaas and PC lately.

It would be REALLY stupid if they put their games day one on PS/PC they will basically kill their console.
Xbox has done it, so PlayStation should learn from their mistake.

I don't think that's the only reason. Even if they put them out day one on PC, I don't think they would sell that huge.

They just aren't the type of games that naturally appeal to the PC crowd.
Good games appeal to everyone.

Sonys current PC slate is all over the shop quality wise. Day one of their best works would do gang busters.

Stuff like Gran Turismo, God of War, Returnal etc.

HZD, Sackboy and Concord (lol) not so much.

Marathon and Concord are both the same kind of weirdness that nobody is asking for. Nobody watched any of that prerelease garbage and got excited for either of them.

Want to know what's going to sell a shit ton? Doom. That's what people want to play. Want to know what isn't? Marathon. Nobody is asking for that.

Yep, the Xbox scenario all over again. They won't do it. Staggered release of 2 years is what they'll keep doing.

It's part of what made the Xbox consoles die when they started pushing PC day one releases. It killed any reason for people like me with good PCs to own an Xbox.

I own a PS5 in addition to my PC precisely because they don't launch their games on PC day one. I even double dip on some of their PC ports. If they did day one PC ports of their games they'd cannibalize their console sales and ensure people like me don't double dip or spend money on their consoles or accessories.

I agree. Neither game created any real tangible hype for me when Sony revealed them in trailers. When I heard Bungie was making marathon i was expecting a single player epic game not a GAAS trash extraction shooter.

Marathon trailer was awesome and has 21m views what are you talking about?
I'm talking about it looking ridiculous. What the hell even is it? The trailer sucked. Of course it got a lot of views it's a big new Bungie game. Who is excited for it?

Regardless of what the game might be now, the actual trailer is hype and had a great reception, like a teaser trailer should have.

Why does it look ridiculous? The art and sound track is banging.

Just because it looks to be in dev hell now doesn't change the fact that it hard at the time.

Another disappointing hero shooter gaas thingy

How about using the franchise that is the grandfather of Halo to, I don't know, make a compelling single player FPS shooter campaign that people want and PS5 could actually use

Sony should just buy Free Radical or whoever owns TimeSplitters at this point. Then combine them with Bungie and have them make Time Splitters 4. Imagine a good TS4 made by the Halo/Destiny devs. Everybody would buy that.

This is an insane take for someone with fortnite in their pfp
Fortnite is pretty simple to understand though...maybe Marathon will be great who knows but the trailer for it was just not the way to go.

They call them teaser trailers for a reason........

Timesplitters 4? Get real that IP is dead and buried.

Lol. I wouldn’t worry too much about what the kids say.

It’s basically nonsense.

Thanks for the explanation. Although English became my main language 15 years ago, I am still sometimes having trouble to understand this kind of sayings. I can understand that it’s not good for a person to be cooked, but for a product. I mean we use also „let it cook“, when a game is unfinished, meaning to give it more time, so „be cooked“ has the complete opposite meaning.

Nvm, stated already.

OT:

Not surprising, really. Bungie was a complete mess before Destiny 1 and it only seems to have gotten worse.

They also were still relatively autonomous despite being acquired by Sony.
We all know this.

Sony is cleaning ship now that they took over and all this is likely the very reason they are taking over control.

I don't get all the GAAS hate around here.

Most are either free to play or don't cost more than other games. They're constantly updated with content, giving people a reason to keep playing, and provide good value.

You'd rather have a game that releases as-is and ends up abandoned, save for maybe some bug fixes and paid DLC, only for a sequel to be released a year or two later, killing/dividing the first game's population and costing you another $70?

That model doesn't make any more sense than GAAS. Especially compared to something like Overwatch 2, which is completely free to play with an optional battle pass full of cosmetics every three months.

1. they take away from developing games we would rather see
2. when they're abandoned, they're dead. I'd rather play games I bought years later.

Also, you're pretending like non-GaaS games don't get patches. Which is weird, or did you mean something else?

Good. Either make it a proper Marathon game with a good single-player campaign (they can still have that extraction shit as a separate multiplayer mode) or fuck off.

I have said it before but Bungie should just support Destiny and make it the best it can be. Don't need another GAAS. Marathon should be turned into a traditional FPS like Halo. Haven't played a good campaign in an FPS since Titanfall 2. Sony needs to take advantage of what they have

Current Bungie is awful with anything pvp related. Far from the days of Halo

I have zero trust

To be fair, I don't even think this is the same Bungie who made the original Destiny vision.

Bungie 1.0 was Halo Bungie.
Bungie 2.0 was Destiny 1 and early Destiny 2 Bungie.
Bungie 3.0 is Microtransaction Destiny and Marathon Bungie.
