Is pet registration mostly a stupid cash grab or what? Someone educate me. Is that a yearly fee or life time? Does it come with a microchip or just a tag that I can go get printed myself with my address and phone number probably for much cheaper?
I am usually anti-everything so I am leaning towards being anti-pet registration. I am actually unsure if the city would even make money on this crap. What is the overhead on running this program?
Ehh, a lot of the money goes to spay/neuter programs or animal services initiatives, so I just consider it like a donation to charity that gives me some dumb perks.

A lot of jurisdictions are life time, one time fee registration, but Toronto is yearly. Microchip is $10 (once) on top of registration. If you adopt straight from TAS, the microchip is included in the cost.
I look at it as less of a cash grab and more of Animal Services being greatly under funded. It basically exist because it has to and is given as little attention and resources as possible to meet the bare minimum.
We had a loose dog running around our neighbourhood a few years ago. It was after 7pm and TAS said they wouldn't send anyone out to help unless the dog was a threat to the public. Of course, it was hit and killed later. After that, they decided to send someone out, although they didn't arrive until over an hour after the dog had been hit and a vet had stopped by and helped us transport the animal to a vet before that.
Another instance was a deer was hit near High Park on a weekend. TAS didn't have any vets for weekend calls like that, so officers had to shoot the deer to put it down.
Sort of like the TTC, I empathize with the issues they face funding wise. But at the same time, it's difficult not to be disgruntled with what sort of service they currently provide.
