Undertale is [has won] the GameFAQs Best. Game. Ever. poll

Rematch: Best video game character of all time?

Results are only viewable after voting.
It's a modern-day Earthbound. I'm not surprised it is winning at all and I hope OoT can be pushed aside for one second to promote an amazing little indie game.

I still have no idea why Undertale is considered a "SJW" game. Because people on Tumblr like it? Because the idea is to not kill things? It's really just a testament to how "SJW" means "thing I don't have a good reason to shit on but will shit on anyway"

Anyway Undertale definitely has my vote over OoT. I've never particularly liked that game and it's not like the contest means anything.

Because it has positive, gay animal characters and preaches a message of tolerance and understanding. And we all know how those people feel about tolerance.

Say what you want about the actual quality of Undertale, the salt around this is delicious XD

I can see them now, furrowing their brows, as if Undertale winning is some injustice proclaiming the end of "common sense".

Honestly, this is pathetic as well. Just sayin'.

It's like when people get some kind of smug satisfaction quoting people from two years ago so they can eat crow. Who cares.

Also, Draven should win because who the hell is anyone on that list.

I know literally none of the characters in the poll above.

Also I need Undertale.

I convinced two friends to buy it and I haven't even played it.

Tumblr and some of 4chan is raiding the poll for undertale.

Is that what it is? I remember when 4chan (I think) was raiding the polls to have the L-Block win greatest character on GameFAQs some time ago. When I saw that Undertale was winning, though it is a great game, I thought there might be some community rallying behind it like the L-Block.

There with you. Honestly, when I first read 'Tyto The Swift', I thought it said Taylor Swift.

To be fair, this guy just copy-pasted a post from a different forum because of its absurdity. But yeah, someone out there genuinely believes this.

Gamers are so stupid sometimes they take trivial stuff, like polls and others opinion,s way too seriously. Undertale is in no way the best game ever to me, never played it, hopefully in the future and I expect good things. That's it. Anyone making a big fuzz about this is just stupid

What does your hear tell you? And why does what anyone else thinks affect what you enjoy and think as the best?

Because other people have played games that I havn't and I can't assess the quality of every game?

I convinced one of my friends to buy it just based on word of mouth. He bought on a whim a little while later, loved it, and bought me a copy for my birthday.

I think Undertale is a better game than LoZ: OoT personally. I've had way more fun playing Undertale and the story, world and characters are top notch. OoT was really a rough game when it came out and age hasn't done it any favors.

There are no real stakes to a GameFAQs poll, so I can't be bothered to care that Undertale is winning. I'm happy a smart, fun indie game is getting this publicity though.

Ocarina of Time would probably top my list if I was compelled to actually make one, but it always wins this stuff. Lots of people share my opinion on how nearly perfect that game is. It doesn't need the press.

But you shouldn't IMO You shouldn't let anyone tell you what a good game is in your opinion not matter how much you read into their assessment of another game you've not played, that's my point. PLay it decide for yourself and pay no mind to stupid polls.

Man. Honestly, this is why I'm apprehensive about buying the game.

Every time I see a thread about the game, it seems like it exists to try to oversell the game to people (life changing, earthbound, goat, 11/10, best rpg) and market it for the developer. I don't mean that in any offense, just the vibe I get.

Basically, the majority of what I see in threads flies directly in the face of my gut feelings. Then I'll see very few, but people that have played it nonetheless, post impresions that mirror what my gut is telling me.

With that considered, I have a hard time defying my gut feeling at the price of admission.

Oh man, I was actually a GameFaqs regular when they were doing the first of these contests waaaaaaay back in the early 00's.

There's a weird sort of nostalgia in seeing the exact same threads full of salt, bickering, side bets, side contests, accusations of proxy voting and/or vote stuffing, and just general nonsense, all a decade and a half later. And of course Ocarina of Time in the finals again, as usual.

Been following the poll for a while voting for Undertale. This is actually a pretty large margin, it only really beat Melee and SMW by a hair in the previous rounds. It's kinda funny seeing the reaction.

I mean, it's completely meaningless in every way. Even ignoring the fact it's a dumb online GameFAQs poll the very concept of a "best game ever" in such a diverse medium is silly. Just glad a good indie game is getting publicity, that's all.

Doubt it, people haven't forgotten about Mother.

Undertale will not be remembered to the same degree in a year. If the same contest was conducted 6 months from now it might make it past a few rounds but eh.

For me Undertale's a'ight. I enjoyed it somewhat, the music is incredible and it has some cool ideas, but it really wasn't super special outside of that for me. OoT is better for me, but I don't really care about this poll, though it's good Undertale is getting recognition.

Undertale's music is great and some of the characters are lovely, but I normally wouldn't call it the best game ever. Between it and OOT though, sure.

The bigger question is why is OoT in the finals of the best game of all time. It's no where near the top, and and there are bunch of other Zelda games that are better then it.

Lol shit like this will always happen in polls like this. I remember the Gamespot best villains and best heroes polls being fucked with the same way years ago.

Well, it's part of the irony of this all.

As a community, GameFAQs is very heavily biased toward older Japanese games, and then many of them proceed to get very angry when communities with different biases (MOBA fans, the "tumblr audience") come in and vote on their polls.

I think OoT has a great case as 'The best game for its time relative to other games of its time'. And by that metric it's remembered as 'The GOAT'.

I get that its a joke and everybody is going to vote for it, but all in all I would not consider Undertale a great game. It is very average all in all.

The game itself is charming and goes against the grain by allowing you to play the game without killing an enemy, but neither is it that fun or addicting compared to games such as Pokemon, Dota, or World of Warcraft. The story is good enough to get a few laughs considering the charming characters, but neither is it comparable to a story such as Metal Gear Solid, Persona 4, or The Witcher.

To me I would give Undertale a 8.0. Its a solid enough game for you to enjoy with plenty of charm, but overall I don't consider it elite in any given category. Its not ground breaking, its not a story that will captivate an audience for generations, and its not addictive enough to sink 100s or thousands of hours into.

As for greatest of all time? I dont think there is a GoAT. Its very opinionated. All i can say is there is ground breaking games that helped shape the future. Halo and Zelda can be two examples of this.

OOT is truly a great game, but I'll always see it as the ALTTP 3D remake. Even then ALTTP being my GOAT I think many see LA as the best.

Dude. Please tell me where in those posts we say it is "Earthbound", "life changing" or "GOAT" - let alone the other things you mention.

It sounds like a very good (not perfect or GOAT) game which is a breath of fresh air in terms of style, creativity and tone. It seems irreverent and witty but also intelligent with a dark edge, and simple but clever mechanics. I've spoken to a friend who said it does a handful of very innovative narrative things, and that it's just on-the-whole a really nice game. Not some epic masterpiece.

Also it is £6 and evidently very simple. Which is a deal-making factor for lots of gamers.

There are lots of reasons people should try it.

I love this analysis. Nirolak, please give us your community analysis of NeoGAF. :3

The original Zelda was my favourite game of all time as a chid. So I was super hyped for LttP but found it to be a crushing disappointment, and it still sits near the bottom of my list of Zelda games. Then OoT came and blew me away, and became my new GOAT. I never once felt like OoT was a remake of LttP. Not even slightly.

Opinions, man. They're crazy.

I just think it's hilarious that people are getting so worked up about this. It's a GameFAQs poll.

Undertale is probably my GOTY but I wouldn't argue it's the best game of all time. But seeing people having hissyfits over this is amazing so I've been voting for Undertale solely to add fuel to the fire.
