Rematch: Best video game character of all time?

Results are only viewable after voting.

haha oh wow

I find that that quote to be a tad disingenuous. Toby Fox (The creator of Undertale) has put music into the Homestuck project, and is familiar with the Homestuck creator, but their works aren't similar.

A good litmus test to use to gauge your interest in Undertale is how you feel about the Mother/Earthbound series. It's charming and light hearted, with some twists and turns along the way. Another recent Earthbound inspired indie is Lisa, if you'r familiar.

I wonder why it's disingenuous...

Seems like these polls just get manipulated for gags now, and GameFAQs just rolls with it in the name of clicks.

At least Undertale is supposedly a decent game.

I love the anger over a popular game winning an annual popularity contest. (Though I also feel a bit bad for the people getting so worked up over it, as I've known many people like that.)

GameFAQs popularity polls often result in joke results. You have to do something to keep it interesting, because GameFAQs runs the same contests every year. For instance, L-Block once won best character.

GameFAQs also leans very heavily towards fantasy games, RPGs, and Japanese games (e.g. Zelda and Final Fantasy).

Which isn't to say Undertale doesn't deserve accolades. It's just to say it's not the most scientific poll.

Are you implying L-Block isn't the best character of all time?

I wish A Link To The Past beat out OOT. As groundbreaking of a game it is, I always think of LTTP as the absolute best game in the series and arguably worthy of best game ever.

Undertale, however, I have no frame of reference for. I'm guessing the only reason it's this far is due to a bunch of people who have a huge hard on for it right now. Nonetheless I respect it's a good game, but when was the last time you saw a game released 3 months ago on a poll like this?

probably getting votes from people that didn't like how Nintendo games otherwise dominated this year

FFVII somehow lost to Smash Bros Melee :-/

Everything in the first reply on the page.

It's being done to troll for reactions. I wouldn't worry about it too much, the poll means nothing, but hopefully the developers of the game don't think they're suddenly more popular (or better) than say, Melee or Ocarina of Time....

Yeah hopefully, because otherwise...umm what will happen then?

They don't know about the greatness of steam sales and bundles.
I bought it and while I liked what I played I don't feel it's an essential purchase at full price. If I could refund it I would, lol.
That's what I've been told. I can wait

most of the votes are coming from reddit, tumblr, and twitter from fan areas. Not really "meme" voiting.

I really doubt most of those votes are serious. Neither of us have any proof of course, but trolling on the internet is definitely a thing. I wouldn't worry about it anyways, next year it'd just be some other game in the final.

I'm not sure why that should be egregious or surprising given Melee's rabid, long sustained fanbase.

The only "proof" i had was that fans keep posting about on these sites and one of the gamefaqs admins posted something about there was no ballot stuffing but a huge influx of votes came in when a popular Undertale twitter account tweeted out the contest.

This makes me wish he's make posting the browser breakdown a regular contest event. The way it is, he's only done it twice. Basically, he posts the statistics on which browsers logged what percentage of votes. These are always interesting, with one year showing 2% of total votes coming from Dreamcasts and a very small number coming from what appeared to be N-Gages.

While I don't have a horse in this race (OoT is great but I put several LoZ games above it/UnderTale made me smile a lot but it missed more times than it hit) this is fascinating to watch. It is something so completely arbitrary yet people are getting worked up like it some how devalues the other property if one wins or will somehow have political ramifications. Looking at certain communities there is definitely a degree of troll votes to disrupt the norm of LOLZeldaWins.

Well, most of the attention Undertale has received comes from the fact that people think that talking about it means trolling the whole Internet, so I'm not surprised at all.

I can't believe fans of something are voting for it in a public popularity poll. How scandalous!

It's impossible that people would vote for a thing they like! They only do it because voting for a great game in a best game contest is a meme!

I guess I no longer understand what a meme is.
It's good but the second statement is impossible if you actually listen to what people say about the game.

Also every corner of this game's fanbase manages to be more obnoxious and cancerous than Homestuck's somehow.

Typically I like to judge fanbases by their most annoying members. That way I can discount any opinions I inherently dislike with ease.

Trolling or not, I think the game is great and it deserves the praise it gets.

Star Wars fans are more obnoxious than Homestuck or Undertale fans. FF7 fans are more obnoxious than Homestuck or Undertale fans.
