WindowsCentral: Bungie's Marathon is doomed

According to Jez Corden, Arc Raiders plays much better than Marathon:

  • Accessibility and Visual Style: ARC Raiders offers a more accessible experience with a retro 80s sci-fi aesthetic, contrasting with Marathon's darker, more generic style.
  • Varied Gameplay: It blends PvE (fighting AI-controlled ARC machines) and PvP combat, encouraging dynamic strategies and unpredictable encounters.
  • Fluid Movement: The game's movement system is praised for being smooth and fun, allowing sprinting, sliding, and using ziplines, which adds excitement to exploration.
  • Creative Weapons: While some weapons lack impact, their unique variety and design make combat feel fresh and distinct.
  • Story and Setting: Set in a post-apocalyptic future, players explore Earth's surface for resources while facing robotic threats and rival scavengers, creating an engaging narrative backdrop. Marathon nearly has no backstory

In contrast, Marathon has been criticized for lacking originality and presenting a more generic look, making it harder to stand out in the extraction shooter genre.

Arc Raiders visuals don't look impressive.

I would say that Arc looks generic and dark while Marathon has a retro 90's sci-fi vibe.

I have seen hours of footage from both the games, and ARC Raiders had literally x3 times more exciting situations than Marathon, literally every round also.
Even the public event of Marathon looks so tame and generic, while ARC Raiders hidden events like Harvester thing feels actual adventury.

Even the Base upgrade situation in Marathon feels hopeless and lifeless compared to ARC.

I didn't get an alpha invite, and the one dude who I know has who was really looking forward to it came away incredibly disappointed.

I like the style and visuals, but damn….. he really wants to try a few runs with people he games with a lot, but….none of us got invites so he can't.

Who offered Bungie to develop this game? Sony? Or it had been in development before they joint the Japanese corporation?

It's funny that people will point to articles of this low calibre as somehow being proof of something.

He's telling people who want to be told Marathon will flop that it will flop.

You know what's funny/ironic gents ? That people are arguing between which of the 2 upcoming, generic slop is best/worst than each other, meanwhile, this :

...looks 10x more exciting since the art-direction is out of this world - an unholy marriage between Armored core, Metal Gear and Attack on Titan, shame that it will most probably spend the better half of a decade in alpha/beta like most of these PC centric titles usually do and also never see a console release.

I couldn't place where I saw a character that looked like the color scheme of Marathon. But I finally remembered only because I sadly own this piece of shit.

Now do Marathon

Better yet find out how Marathon was supposed to look and how they ditched it to go with the current style according to the devs
Marathon looks better than its reveal because it's visually cleaner. The contrast between realistic environments and colourful characters/weapons is easy on the eyes.

Everything in Arc looks...brown and grey.

Some even say this in the other forum. Almost everything in arc raiders besides maybe artstyle (if you like those colors) is better than Marathon. Things do not look good for Marathon.

AA game development >> AAA game development.
