Warner Bros. must be worried now.

Now that Deadpool has been successful, they might think there won't be enough thirst for BvS. They might just have to rethink their entire strategy for their upcoming slate of movies. They're no longer safe.

It's over.

Opening Weekends, Superhero movies:

1) The Avengers - 207mil
2) Avengers: Age of Ultron - 191
3) Iron Man Three - 174
4) Dark Knight Rises - 160
5) The Dark Knight - 158
6) Spider-Man 3 - 151
7) Iron Man 2 - 128
8) Man of Steel - 116
9) Spider-Man - 114
10) X-Men: The Last Stand - 102

If Deadpool stays flat from Friday through Valentines day, it'll occupy the #10 spot. Maybe threaten to wedge itself between Spidey & Supes.

Probably saved Reynolds career

Can you truly "save" a thing that's unkillable?

edit: that Variety tweet seems to be referring to the 4 day holiday weekend, not the 3 day open.

#Deadpool pegged for $130 million debut, setting Presidents Weekend box office record http://bit.ly/1WjkGhO

So that we don't have people disappointed with tomorrow's results, that $130M would include Monday as well.

Spider-Man made 115mil over its 3-day opening back in 2002
Man of Steel made 116mil over its 3-day in 2013

Man of Steel would have been close to $129M going by modern box office tracking. No studio would bother to separate out that $12M Thursday gross today, even if the previews started at 7pm (which I think was the case with MOS).

^ Buttman is coming for that number one spot. We're talking a $350 million opening weekend. More screens will be created to satisfy the demand.

This is poetic.

I drew comparisons between Rocky IV and BvS. The latter is a remake of the former. Right down to Batman being Drago and Rocky being Superman. And now this gif.

This is clearly a sign.

You're right. That's actually a pretty good point.

will be sorta funny that the sole X film represented in that top 10 will be Deadpool, though.

Loved the movie. So many children though. Damn, I mean it's like parents completely ignored the rating of the film. So inappropriate. Loved the meta, 4th wall breaking in the film.

Bummer. My theater as packed and I dont hink I saw a single kid. Just a lot of highschoolers and 20 somethings.

Comic crowd is old now son. Adult comics are going to be where it's at

Adult comics been where it's at. None of these comics movies are for kids, and haven't been since 2000. The actual comics they're based on haven't been for kids since the mid-80s.

You can take kids to 'em, sure. But nobody making 'em gives fuck one about whether it's actually for them.

That's a real weird one, though, since those tickets were all bought by Wal-Mart as a cross-promotion and then sold through their stores. We never got confirmation on how many of those tickets actually got to consumers.

On that vein, Matrix Reloaded should probably be retroactively given the OD record in 2003. Shit was contentious as hell back then when its $5M on Thursday previews put it over Spider-Man 1, heh.

He just lucky to be before Taylor, and Armie. He is still just a sizemore clone.
You probably way more right than you can even believe.

also again, eatta shitto.
Still salty, you need to get that checked out.

They don't buy toys, well not in the amount that companies really like.

Milking comic book nerds worked out well for the movie industry.
I can name maybe 10 superheros. I'd never heard of Deadpool until I read about it on Gaf. Then my wife who's knowledge of comics is even less then mine saw the trailer, and told me we should go see it. We're both in our mid fifties.

We're going because it looks like a good move.

Edit: Just mentioned to her that Ryan is nude in the film, and before I could finished pouring my morning coffee, she bought tickets online for tonight. lol

Pretty sure Marvel is going to keep putting bank to their formula as to what we've seen in Avengers, Captain America, etc (PG-13) and going for $1billion+

Considering virtually all of the DC and Marvel superhero comics are PG to PG-13 equivalent, it makes sense, though. They're staying true to the comics. Movie Deadpool is way worse mature-content-wise than the vast majority of Deadpool comics.

That formula is basically Iron Man.

Carrying Avengers, and now carrying Captain America in his own movie. Maybe he'll carry Thor next. Eventually make his want to Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy too.

Truly the new billion dollar man.

This movie has perfect marketing. Send out lots of warnings to movie theaters about how this movie is a "hard-R". Market it towards kids. Then deny all responsibility when tons of them buy tickets online/early and try to sneak in to the local multiplex.

Damnit FOX, you're just making my job harder!

A ton of parents were trying to drop their kids off for this movie too. I can't tell you how many times I was yelled at when parents found out they'd have to accompany them to the movie. 😁

I'm working the door all day Sun. It'll be even worse I suspect.

Half of that was from kids trying to sneak in. (Believe me, I know, I was working the door at my local multiplex yesterday).

I can't tell you how many <17yr olds I turned away.

Don't kids buy tickets for a different movie like Zoolander then just walk in Deadpool after the movie starts. Or are your guarding the movie door the entire time?

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
This is hilarious! I stopped reading the X books around the early 90's. I just remember Deadpool as that shitty "Extreme" character Liefeld came up with. Guess Marvel did a lot with him since then.

Well I don't care about Deadpool, I hope this forces Fox to do right by the X-men. What if Deadpool does better than Apocalypse?

the salt of vindication is a salt i can live with.

Ontopic this is great, hope this inspires more off the beaten path takes with content in the future of cape flicks
.

We past that with Guardians, Watchmen, and Ant Man

Reserved seats.

That's not going to work this weekend when the theater is sold out. I'm sure we'll spend all day ejecting people from the theater.

The comic book movie audience has always been grown up, but think about how many new fans those original Spider-Man and X-Men films from the early 2000s brought in.

A 10 year old who watched Spidey 1 in 2002 is now 24. It's clear that those kids didn't fall out of love with comic book movies as they aged, and these are the people filling up the theatres for Deadpool right now. You don't NEED the kids to have a successful superhero movie based on a Marvel property.

Of course, allowing more people into the theatre to watch your movie is always a good thing, but I honestly believe Deadpool would be doing far worse if it was PG-13. There's just a lack of appeal there.

Now bring on the R-rated Wolverine movie already.

Not only does he finally have a hit, but it's for his dream role he's been trying to get made for years and years. Dude must be delighted.

I was listening to a VFX podcast with one of the guys who worked at Blur Studios. He mentioned that Deadpool was made mostly because of the test footage released years ago. The reaction to that test convinced the head honchos to go ahead with the movie.

Deadpool is touching himself this weekend. God damn glad this movie is going to be a massive success.
