Except that's a gross generalization and you're wrong.

I didn't create the stereotype nor do I reinforce the ideas found within the stereotype. You can thank frats and their deviant behavior for such a thing. It's a gross generalization that I'll stand behind 100%. You'll cite exceptions and those exceptions are few and far in between. Not to say that all frats are filled to the brim with rapists, but those types of big boys clubs do little to discourage such behavior.

And you're wrong, but that's okay. Sexual assaults don't occur at any higher or lower rate at schools with or without Greek life.

Ratsky, I made this a bigger size than I usually do so you could see.

I understand what you're saying, but this really rubs me the wrong way. It's like people who are ok with portraying black men as thugs 99% of the time and then hiding behind "statistics" when questioned. I could go into a multi-paragraph rant with how this relates to the porn industry, but nobody would be here for it.

I have my issues with the Greek community, but that did feel like a moment of lazy storytelling.

Better than I imagined. Looking like it's going to rival Asylum at least.

I love the casting this season. So perfect.

I've got better things to do than to argue with someone who clearly has ties with Greek life. It looks like an accurate portrayal of deviancy struck a nerve. It's an easy target because it's a harsh reality.

royalan, if the shoe fits then it simply fits.

It's fun to talk about things you don't know anything about on the internet!

This is a disgusting post.

I just realized how rape-y this episode was. Jessica Lange using magic to force that guy into kissing her and then draining him of his life force, the frat gang rape of Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga riding that guy then killing him. I guess that was the theme of the night or something.
Toss in slavery and the two diggers at the end too - exploitation/subjugation of others for personal gain was all over the episode.

Is it okay to just jump into this series?

Yes. Every season is a new setting, new characters etc. You can jump in right now on this season and if you like it go back to the previous two. They just re-use actors sometimes, and share horror themes. That's all.

Well, it took me a little bit, but the GIFs for Episode 1 are now online. Some of them are big, so I apologise, but I didn't want to make those moments choppy.

I managed to find about 20 GIFs in the first episode, and that's after cutting 3 or 4 because I couldn't get them down to an acceptable size.

Side note: I didn't realise how dimly lit the opening scene was.

Enjoy!

I'm not being a dick, but I do suggest reading the OP. Not only does it catch you up on the pre-release information about Coven, but also gives you very brief overviews of both Murder House and Asylum.

Wouldn't be AHS with at least a few scenes every episode shot in a blackhole with candlelight.

Both Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates are awesome.

One question: what's Jessica Lange's last line that mentions Mary Todd Lincoln? I can't make out the first part of it.

Not sure how I felt about tonights episode, just kinda meh
maybe I was over hyped. Season preview looked great though.

Is it okay to just jump into this series?
Yes every season is a completely different setting, story and theme.
only thing that is the same is alot of the same actors but they have new characters every season with no connection.

i guess this is the swagged out season. great music choices and great visuals.

zoe actually fucking dudes brains out is killing me. its great to have taissa back on the show though.

emma is a little too convincing in that madison role. i wonder if she's that bitchy in real life?

I really enjoyed this episode, but something that sort of bothers me from personal experience:

I get that being in a fraternity comes with a baggage of stereotypes, true for some, untrue for others. But how come whenever we need a rapist on television, some frat kid is our best option? It feels lazy. And yes, I realize that Evan Peters's character is supposed to be a good guy, but still. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

One thing I thought was kind of weird was how Evan Peter's character felt kind of forced in that group. Like it didn't really fit. "Hey guys let's party and get drunk ok!!!" "Whoa what the hell I didn't know you guys were into raping chicks"

It was weird for him to give that big speech in the bus like he's in some sort of leadership role and then suddenly be surprised that they're gang rapers.

Oops. You're not being a dick, but I should pay closer attention. My bad. Thanks for the responses guys.

Lmao, damn. I knew those Roberts all had attitude

Wtf that must be awkward as shit during filming

Wow, well, pretty much guarantees she won't be returning.

Apparently they're both quite good now, so I wouldn't be surprised if Emma were to turn up in the season following if she wanted to sign on.

She was only interested in AHS this season because it focused around witches which was a theme she loved so she asked to be included in the cast.

I agree, the opening credits are incredible.

My favorite character so far is definitely Emma's. She's channeling Jill Roberts very well, just as I was hoping.

I'm gonna echo the general sentiments of the opening credits, holy crap they're incredible, Asylum's were too and I'm glad they've not lost the touch.

I don't dislike Zoe though, I am sure she will end up having some sort of gift better than death vag/death gobbie.

Never watch the previous seasons (didn't like the haunted house and asylum premise). I came for the witches and they deliver. Pretty good pilot, subbed :D

yup

He's a rapist. She wanted to rape him as retribution. Its that simple.
It was a stupid decision on her part though, and will surely result in his death being linked to her BF's death, putting the whole witch circle under the spotlight.

This show is like X-men, but with witches. I love it.

And that opening credits is insane. I can't believe something like that is on normal television.

I watched the first season but I never saw Asylum. If I started watching this season is it completely different or are there ties?

Read the OP.

Every season of American Horror Story is a new, self-contained story. The series carries over the cast and crew from previous seasons (at their own choosing) however the stories and characters are 100% completely unrelated.

Really enjoyed the first episode
Was pleasantly surprised to see the actress that plays Nan back. I had no idea she was in the series and she was tied for my favourite character of murder house

If the Supreme has all the powers that means they're clairvoyant too right? How comes Fiona couldn't hear Madame LaLaurie in the coffin like Nan could?

I agree that it seems like Zoe might be the next Supreme too

I'm assuming every now and then there's a few "new" powers similar to mutations in DNA or something in the generations or throughout the bloodlines.

Her official description implies that Fiona will take a future interest in her for her power

An enigmatic clairvoyant, not much is known about Nan other than her tendency to be underestimated by others. Her ability to inhabit other people's minds catches attention of Fiona.

I absolutely love that there just isn't a straight clear and cut thing about every one of the characters - heck there's obviously some backstory to Spalding (the butler) and I can't wait to see how things turn out with him. I can't wait to find out about all of them - and heck I understand why Ryan Murphy is interested in continuing Coven in a side or companion series.

I'm extremely excited to see more of Myrtle Snow, Misty Day as well as Joan Ramsey's debuts though. Should make for some good television.

As for Zoe being the Supreme. I think she's being set up as a red herring. I feel like that's much too predictable.

I don't see how they could possibly end up being linked seeing as there is no clear connection to Zoe and the frat guy and the two deaths happened in completely different parts of the country.

Ryan Murphy has done an interview about the series. It's got some spoilers, so don't read unless you want a vague idea of what's going to happen.

I read it, I probably shouldn't have, but fuck, we're in for a ride and my mind is already racing with predictions. I stand by my comments that I doubt Ryan would reveal anything he didn't want us to know.

I found this funny.

I noticed that the drug she thinks holds the secret to eternal life is called RM47 … interesting. [Think: Ryan Murphy, 47.]

[Laughs] You know, I had no idea about that. [Series co-creator] Brad Falchuk wrote that scene. I blame it completely on Brad. It wasn’t until I saw the first cut of the episode that I was like, “Wait …” I think he was making fun of me. I think he was being mean, saying I was born in 1947, an inside joke that even I didn’t catch, that damn Falchuk.

When did you start thinking about witches?

During season one. Jessica and I were talking about how she was always attracted to that Salem story because her granddaughters are actually descendants of the Salem witches. I found that to be very interesting and cool, so I started researching it. I really locked into it when I thought about the witches story as sort of a metaphor for any persecuted and hunted minority group in this country.

There will be a Halloween episode this year too, as always. It will be a two-parter

And he talks about Emma Roberts having a scene in the future

You’ll see in the upcoming episodes we ask her to do pretty out there, amazing things, including the most disturbing scene we have ever done on the show.

Most disturbing scene they've ever done? Can they honestly top a cry wank or a coat hanger abortion?

If you want to see men tortured watch Murder House.

If you want to see women tortured watch Asylum.

If you want to see both tortured watch Coven?

Haha, why did Zoe didn't just put a pillow over his face and had to fuck him?

Brain Burst->Bleeding to Death >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pillow sucking air out.

Another interview! With a few light spoilers.

6. Myrtle's (Frances Conroy) and Fiona's history as rivals will be revealed -- in flashback. "There's an entire episode where we show them when they were 18 at the school and why they became bitter rivals," Murphy says. "Fiona was very deadly, even as an 18-year-old. We got to cast the 18-year-old Frannie and Jessica, which was very fun."

I can't fucking wait! They'll apparently use eight Stevie Nicks songs this year too.

Wow show didn't waste any time, so much covered in one episode!

Also if you guy's are worried about frat boy stereotypes, stop watching now.

This series thrives on cliches, stereotypes and camp.

Considering I've seen every episode of the series, I'm pretty well versed in what the series is and isn't. It struck me as lazy, especially when the rest of the episode was surprisingly neat.

Not really. It's a really disgusting generalization that doesn't really have any weight in the aggregate outside of personal anecdotes. If your anger is directed anywhere, it's the infamous "hookup culture" which plagues any college campus.

It's a more complicated discussion than this post entails, but it was just something I clocked as lazy story telling until TheWreckage jumped on with The Worst Post Of The Thread. Probably not worth continuing as a discussion.

Could you suggest an alternative that would fit into the story / setting?
