AMERICAN HORROR STORY: Coven |OT| When witches don't fight, we burn....

The new intro is by far their best yet, IMO. The episode itself was decent, but I think I definitely preferred the last 2 season openers. I'm just hoping this isn't as lighthearted as it's looking right now.

Killer vagina,eh. Well that's certainly...something. Ending was also very creepy in that she's willing to have sex with a rapist just to kill him.

Very odd season opener and nothing like I expected it to be.

She sort of raped him (and then killed him). Now she had the "power".

I read somewhere that she's supposed to play
Frances Conroy's younger self. Again
. Grain of salt and all that, of course.
i think this might be true, from THR preview:
6. Myrtle's (Frances Conroy) and Fiona's history as rivals will be revealed -- in flashback. "There's an entire episode where we show them when they were 18 at the school and why they became bitter rivals," Murphy says. "Fiona was very deadly, even as an 18-year-old. We got to cast the 18-year-old Frannie and Jessica, which was very fun."

She's a very one note actress. I hope she doesn't come back in season 4.

I've only seen her in Murder House and I don't think it's fair to judge her only on that since her character was more the issue than her. She's still young and she could still be great in Coven. It's just that in the premiere everyone was far more interesting, both character and acting wise. She definitely doesn't seem to have inherented the same acting chops Vera did though.

My favorite character and performance so far is Emma's. She plays bitchy so well. I definitely hoped she was gonna channel Jill here and she is, so I'm happy.

I think Taissa Farmiga is developing into a better actress the more work she does. She gets typecasted in certain roles, so it is difficult to show a lot of improvement when you are playing the same emo teenager over and over again. She has been in around 4 movies and this is her 2nd tv show role, and it seems like she is getting better the more work she does. She has been lucky to have roles opposite very strong actors/actress, so even little mistakes by her really stick out. Hopefully she is able to learn from all the strong talent around her. It will be difficult for any young actress to look great when you are playing opposite Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange. Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, and Frances Conroy. The best gauge for me is how she does in scenes with Emma Roberts, Jamie Brewer and Queenie.

You can almost guess that she will develop the power of death touch o something. It's not going to be sexual at some point. And remember they are setting this up as a war; there will be lots happening. Some of the shocking things in episode one are already setting the stage for a crazy season. Especially Kathy Bates' character...

I think the potential to have a huge fight between the dark magics of Voodoo with Angela Basset against the Langes supreme power of a dark witch coupled with Bates sadistic rituals should be fun to watch. It will be interesting to see how Sarah Paulson and her witches in training will play into the fight between the two sides.

Sorry, a couple of days behind.

Damn, that premiere was boooooooooooring. And that expository dialogue was cringeworthy.

I'm worried that this season is going to be severely lacking in the horror department. Not that this show is ever all that scary, but I can see this season being far less fucked up than Murder House and Asylum. And that would be disappointing.

I haven't watched the other seasons, but did you miss the gang rape and girl with the power to fuck people to death? I'd call that pretty fucked up. lol

By this show's standards, both of those are pretty tame, actually.

The LaLaurie stuff, on the other hand - I'll take more of that, please.

Was so hyped up for this but i kind of agree. The beginning with Kathy Bates was great then all downhill from there. Gonna keep watching of course.

I don't mind so much. Both Murder House and Asylum were almost relentlessly bleak. If this one's gonna be more fun, I'll take it.

I'm surprised to no see much talk on the witch that got burnt at the stake
It was a modern times thing which was crazy barbaric. I can't believe that anyone would burn someone at the stake in modern day America, it just seemed so sadistic

I don't think she is dead. I think her powers will rejuvenate her and she'll come back and resurrect the love affair properly

I think what's nice about her ability is the tie-in with her husband's experiments in season 1.

But I liked the bleakness, especially in Asylum.

Murphy shows in general veer so wildly in tone that it's nice to see a bit of consistency from him. Though it was still an epic clusterfuck, Asylum is probably the most focused, consistent season of television Murphy has ever made.

I've never seen any Murphy shows other than AHS, but that was focused? Jesus Christ, how much of a mess are his other shows?

I'm really excited about the new season. Asylum grew on me eventually, but it was all over the place and took a lot longer to get into. I like that this season is more focused and the premise and storyline really grab my attention.

Zoe's power, however, is totally dumb. I hope it grows and changes over time and/or they find a really creative way of working it into the storyline. I'm confident one or both of those things will occur.

Also, I really love the music they're using this season and the flash-backs through history.

Is there a central theme to this show? Every season switches gears and moves to another setting. What is the appeal of the show? I liked Carnivale. Is this similar?

Jessica Lange makes me sweat.

It's an anthology. Each season plays around with a different assortment of supernatural, paranormal, and macabre themes with plenty of tasteless sex thrown around for good measure.

She sort of raped him (and then killed him). Now she had the "power".

I mean, she didn't just "have sex" with him. She raped him.

Which actually makes the entire scene even worse. Rape used as revenge...Oh dear.

I'm more than a little embarrassed I didn't pick up on it during my viewing last night. Although, in fairness, I did watch it pretty late and I was tired...not that that really excuses misses such a big aspect of that distasteful scene.

A very strange kick-off, but I'm intrigued. Felt as though it was stuffed to the gills just to get the season off to a faster start. Worked, didn't work, I don't really know.

That said, tonally interesting, love seeing Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson in an feisty character relationship. Should be good to see how that plays out.

Need to see the Voodoo crew get involved.

The method of rape as revenge made sense. The motivation to do it was the bigger issue imo. I get that she'd be angry but she only knew Emma Roberts a day or so and had known Evan Peters even less

I do not get this. It was obviously the intention of the scene to disturb you. It could not have had any other effect.

I have no doubt we will get a lot more. Remember the premise people. Voodoo (actually more like Hoodoo) vs. black magick witchcraft. It's going to get ugly. The horror will no doubt be in the bizarre imagery and the cruel nature of the characters. Did people miss the very end
with Bates being exhumed? She will no doubt exact her cruel revenge.
I think they had to setup motivation for the youngsters to tap into their powers negatively. I really don't think this will be a cake walk... It will play heavily on themes of persecution and vengeance.

I think this season will be outstanding just for the bizarre imagery alone. I felt like I was watching a Jodorowsky picture at times. I do concur with some of the criticisms regarding the first episode though, some of the expository dialogue was off. Seems more like a result of wanting to get things going.

If the season does and up sucking I'll eat crow. Totally strapped in though. Some fucked up things ahead.

...she did kill him though?

Madison (Emma Roberts) killed Kyle (Evan Peters) when she flipped the bus
Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) killed the rapist guy in hospital. I think Nem thought that Zoe raped Kyle to death

Sorry for the names in brackets, it's helping me learn

Watching now but main girl's pretty much Jubilee to Emma Roberts' Jean Grey, if Jean were dumb and shitted on other mutants, oblivious to their powers.

Pleading for a Connie Britton appearance as some power mad witch.

There is definitely more to Zoe than her toxic vagina. When the other girls were spooking her out when she got to Hogwarts she screamed and the candles + fire place lit up then smoked out

I think Misty will come back and get revenge for her death too. First time I watched it when she said her attackers will end in flames I though hell, but it seems more of a threat this time round

It didn't really disturb me though. It was more distasteful more than anything and thinking back, it's actually a poorly thought out scene too. Almost as if they decided they needed to hammer home the point that she has a power that kills anyone who has sex with her...willingly or otherwise.

The entire scene in the hospital room was just...ugh. I hope we don't see more the same going forward otherwise I'm pretty much done with the show.

To me, that scene just meant that she had no idea how to use her power without trying to recreate her first -accidental- kill. I am pretty sure she will learn soon (but at the same time, hope that anger wont make her go out on a revenge-spree, cause that is just dumb in the long run).

FX just baffles me sometimes. They will make episodes available on the Hulu website but not on the Hulu plus app? I cannot access the site on my ipda. Why do they block content for paying customers? Makes no sense.

Right?! I want to watch your shows on my PS3 not laptop, FX.

Finally watched all of the premiere and I really dig it. Taissa Farmiga is a cutie. :3

I expected something bad to happen to Emma Roberts, but didn't see a rape coming. I'm curious to see where Jessica Lange's arc is headed.

Really enjoyed the first episode. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Basset were are fantastic.

I actually don't mind Tassia as Zoe and I assume that her power is not going just be death by sex.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.

Not just that, look at the tone of Season 1-2 to 3-5 of Nip/Tuck (RIP). I like that show but the tone went from comedy to Drama over the "Who is the Carver" (which is what brought me into the show) but then the show went batshit crazy because Murphy wanted to do Glee and I think the cast was getting tired of the melodrama.

So...

Precious - Living Voodoo doll
Addie - Can hear shit
Emma Roberts - telekinesis
Avril Lavigne - magic vagina

Am I right in believing there's 1 supreme witch per generation? So there should be like 3, right?
