Can't imagine the BBC are too happy about him saying that...
Confirms the rumour though.

This may be the only circumstance in which we can get
a Doctor that doesn't look like a boy-band member
, so very exciting news.

My guess is that the
9th aged in a different timeline, or something.
Really looking forward to see what they do with it.
I hope they don't just brush off an explanation if that is indeed something like the case.

My guess (or hope) is that it's more along the line of
The Watcher/Dream Lord/Valeyard or other future version of the Doctor
because an
lolalternatetimeline 9th Doctor
would be such a dick move it wouldn't even be funny. Then it would feel like they are just doing it out of spite more than anything else. Not that I wouldn't put it past them, mind.

It's not Moffat's fault if Eccleston doesn't want to come back. If he wants to use the Ninth, this seems like a better compromise than straight up recasting.

(unless that rumor of Moffat being rude about Eccleston's indecisiveness pushed him to not returning is true. in which case, it is Moffat's fault. :lol)

I said it before in the other topic, but Eccelston isn't going to come back, if he isn't going to return for the biggest event for one of the oldest and longest running Sci-Fi shows he was a part of then he isn't ever going to come back.

So I have 0 problems if they
replaced him and wove it into the story, if anything I would prefer it, it would mean not having to worry about him in the future.

Wasn't that the rumour from the blog that wasn't at all real and was totally made up from older rumours?

I'm not putting the blame on Moffat (this time). So
Eccleston doesn't want to come back for whatever reason.
Fine, that is something you as a showrunner will have to deal with. But to just (if the rumor is true)
recast the character and play it off as alternate-timeline/aged-up/mutated/whatever
feels like such a childish way to deal with it. Every other writer (Gaiman being a good example giving the recent interview) has to work with constraints, so why can't
"No 9th Doctor in any form"
be one of them this time?

In any case, I think I'm just going to go on a media blackout. All these rumors and gossip is just starting to spoil me on the show. I'll probably be better off by going in blind and seeing what kind of mess they've cooked up while watching.

Jemma Redgrave (Stewart) talks filming 50th. Asked if it's going to be "movie length" she stutters and stammers and says "Well, it's difficult, because the BBC want it to fit between something and Strictly Come Dancing..."

GG BBC. Prats. Give this whatever slot it needs and as much time as it needs.

Not even the 50th anniversary show of Doctor Who can get much more than 45 minutes. Wouldn't want it getting in the way of reality TV and gameshows now would we?
lol bbc

I don't know if it's the BBC being tighter or just the execs on Moffat's era being worse, because the previous lot managed to squeeze extended running times out of the BBC a lot - Voyage of the Damned, Journey's End, The End of Time ending up not just a two parter, but with the second half nearly an hour and a half long etc etc.

It'll be a shame if this only ends up being an hour, but between her comments and filming being over inside 4 weeks it's certainly looking that way.

I was thinking about this the other night, and honestly, the end of time is almost a better anniversary special than what we're supposedly getting. Tons of recurring characters, the docs mom, Rassillon, Dalton spittle, etc.

The Woman in the End of Time who covers her face, and appears earlier too iirc, was originally created and written as The Doctors mother, they don't actually say in the show who it is though and is left up to viewers.

oh shit i never knew that

Well, it's less she was written as the Doctor's Mother and more that she was always intended to be vague and left for interpretation - is it Susan? Romana? His sister? etc. RTD has said that when he wrote the episode, though, to him it is his mother, and they case it and such with that as their thought process.

I hate it when writers are vague on purpose like that. If it's his mother then make it official already >_< As is, it might as well be no one important at all.

I am quoting myself here because after watching the series 7 finale...

No doubt.

I mean, if I'm gonna shoot for the moon, I'm shooting for the fucking moon here: I'd like this flashback to be sort of a quick-cut montage thing showing McGann as the 8th, falling DURING the timewar, regenerating into Eccleston as the 9th (Born in War), and Eccleston closing the deal and running shortly thereafter.

2 minutes tops. It could be done.

It'll never happen. I KNOW THIS. I know it won't happen. But that's the brass ring, for me.

it appears something REALLY close to this might/maybe/could actually happen. Except not Eccleston, of course.

Edit: Reactions to some of the blacked out spoilers starting right around post 200 or so are kinda funny in retrospect.

Yeah, it's a good read.

Hurt playing a previous Doctor was spot on, but the reveal that the Doctor knew all about this guy but was keeping him secret was interesting.

More details on John Hurt in 50th

During a visit by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to the Doctor Who studios at Roath Lock in Cardiff, costume designer Howard Burden revealed some new bits of info about the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. According to The Telegraph, Burden states that Hurt will play
a “dark Doctor,"
adding:

“
There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor
.”

Pretty much as expected.

50th convention

Matt Smith will attend the only official 50th anniversary Celebration at ExCeL, London alongside special guests confirmed so far: Tom Baker*, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy who have also played the iconic role of the Doctor. The event on Nov 22, 23 & 24 is a must for the whole family to celebrate their love of all things Doctor Who, with an exciting range of activities to suit all ages. Keep your eyes peeled for further announcements of high profile guests in the coming weeks. Matt Smith says, “The event this year will be an extra special occasion for me, I’m truly looking forward to a huge celebration with the fans in the lead up to the 50th anniversary episode.”

Ticket holders to this once-in-a-lifetime event will have access to a whole range of activities including:
• Guaranteed seats to two theatre panel shows featuring star guests from 50 years of Doctor Who.
• Guaranteed seats in a spectacular special effects show hosted by Doctor Who’s special effects guru Danny Hargreaves.
• Activities in the main halls including: stunt workshops with Doctor Who stunt co-ordinator Crispin Layfield and stunt double Gordon Seed, audio and visual effect workshops, on-stage panels with cast members, walk-like-a-monster master-classes with Doctor Who’s official monster choreographer Ailsa Burke, quizzes and games for fans young and old and plenty more to ensure the whole family have an amazing day out celebrating Doctor Who.

All of the above will be available to guests who purchase a standard ticket to the event. Tickets go on general sale at 11am on Monday July 8 2013 from celebration.doctorwho.tv. Standard tickets are priced at £45 for adults and £20 for kids, while a family ticket will cost £104 (two adults and two children). Tickets cover entry to the Celebration for one day.

There is also an option to purchase a limited edition TARDIS ticket. This ticket guarantees front row seats to the theatre shows, a private lounge for use all day, drinks and light refreshments and a special goodie bag with exclusive merchandise which can be collected on the day guests attend. TARDIS tickets are priced at £95.50 for adults, £44.25 for children and £218 for a family.

To ensure every visitor gets access to the best experience, when buying tickets online they will have the option to choose one of two streams – Ice Warrior or Weeping Angel – which will reserve each guest a seat for that day’s shows in the theatre. Visitors to the Celebration will also have the opportunity to visit signature and photo booths where they can meet their heroes from 50 years of Doctor Who (photos with Matt Smith should be booked in advance via the website). These opportunities will be available at a fee and subject to availability.

In addition to the Celebration, further activity is being planned for the Saturday evening and will be announced soon.

For more information on the Celebration and a Plan Your Day guide, visit celebration.doctorwho.tv. To hear who else will be making the journey to this once-in-a-lifetime occasion at ExCeL in November subscribe to the doctorwho.tv newsletter and follow on twitter at www.twitter.com/dwcelebration.

Will be getting the TARDIS tickets then!

Will try to go for Saturday as well, hope they announce something in the evening for the 50th Episode.

A screening with fans there in 3D would be fantastic, plus it would seem odd to not have something and have people have to travel home when its on after the event.

Moffat's episodes would benefit from extra time.

He's guilty of packing too much stuff into 45 minute episodes.

I wonder if they'd dare...

Make him 8. 8 at the end of his life when he ended the Time War.

This would be a safe choice.I don't necessarily mind it, but I think it kind of deflates the big reveal at the end of The Name Of The Doctor.

Chuck of SFDebris has posted a short video with some of his John Hurt speculation. Including a few neat ones I didn't even think about that really tie in with the early show.

That's significantly less daring than adding a whole new Doctor. I'd be disappointed.

While I still think it's a possibility, I think the big strike against my own speculation would be that there's no reason not to bring McGann back in that case.

During a wide-ranging interview that takes in past, present, and future Doctor Who, composer Murray Gold gave us a few words on the forthcoming 50th anniversary episode, filmed earlier this year.

Though there was understandably very little Gold was able to share publicly, he did tell us this:

"There's some really interesting things to say about [the 50th anniversary special] but I can't say them. It's very, very well directed. There's a thing they've done in it, which might be controversial… It's interesting though."

"SO MUCH AWESOME! LOOK AT AT ALL THIS AWESOME!

I can't tell you what the awesome is."

Controversial.

11 is regenerating into 10.

I hope not. I would be for a cliffhanger regeneration though. Have 11's regeneration fail or go wrong and 10 is the star of the Christmas special and has to help complete the process. Maybe they can finally explain the Watcher from the 4th Doctor's regeneration while they are at it.

The Doctor botches his regeneration into 12, and continues changing between 11 and 10 throughout the special, and finally completed it at the end of the anniversary special.

I would love this. But what about the Christmas special!? Ugh, November 23rd is so far away.
