Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

The same could be said of most current games.

I think it looks fantastic, but so did 2016 and Eternal. More of a credit to ID tech rather than a negative IMO.

Its still one of the best looking games out right now and the full RT isn't even implemented yet.

"Abysmal" is a bit hyperbolic.
True.

Whilst I enjoyed the game, TDA looks quite washed out and blurry on my system despite running maxed out at 4K. The former is probably due to artistic direction which is intentionally giving grey-blacks instead of black blacks. I cannot seem to 'fix' the inherent blurriness present in the game however. May also be the awful HDR implementation which is hampering the visuals (unlike Eternal which really 'pops' in HDR on an OLED).

Doom 2016 and Eternal both appear to have better IQ at 4K.

Just finished it. Its a great game that on balance while not as good as Eternal is at least in my opinion on par with 2016. The combat started off slow but towards the end once you have upgraded everything, it's probably the aspect of the game that is at least as good as the previous entries. Where I have a problem is the with the level design, which when it sticks to a more linear design is as good as anything done before but the open battlefield areas are poor. I wouldn't have minded 1 or 2 but there are several of these areas. Its feels like I am playing Serious Sam with Painkillers' art style.

Ooof. This game goes on and on. Just finished chapter 20. Maybe beginning to outstay its welcome now, so looking forward to wrapping it up.

To be honest, the open map levels are all a bit samey.

And it just dawned on me that the enemy don't fight each other like they have done in all other dooms. What kind of nonsense is this? 😂

I have enjoyed it though, much more than I ever thought I would after seeing the reveal trailers. Probably on par with 2016 for me, and maybe slightly better than eternal.

Spent around 3 hours clearing chapter 14 :The Spire of Nerathul today. 30 hours total playtime so far, on Ultra Violence. Its generally not too tough, but you run into combinations of demons that need a new approach. I got stuck on the ruby that is past a locked chamber with a revenant and an agaddon hunter for an hour or so lmao. You can skip it, as well as a lot of other encounters. I wonder how many did that and just followed the main quest to finish the game in 15-20 hours. Im looking at 50 hours on UV including secrets and all encounters. Maybe a good idea to start on easy and move up the ladder because a lot of the time has been spent just learning skills and weapons.

Yeah, Hugo does weekly streams like he did with Eternal. Each week he plays a new level, gives development insights and shares updates.
Doesn't it start in a few minutes? Maybe he will mention Path Tracing. Its not on thursday but today.

Pretty deep into the game now. It's a fun time. Certainly worth adding to the collection, which I'll do on Steam when it goes on sale. Little too much sass from Hugo to get full price out of me. Least favorite of the modern trilogy, but easy better than most other SP FPS games on the market. Much better than the last Doom 3. I could see it getting into my Top 5 for the year with ease, maybe even number 1 from a big publisher.

Ultra-Violence is kickin my ass. Anyone else playing on UV and struggling?
I started struggling when they upped difficulty without giving any notice.

Trick is to not give a dime. Stay on top till you get rid of the pesky ones. Ones that is done, you can focus on big one.

You have to get parries right. Else be prepared to restart the fight.

You say the pesky ones but don't they spawn all the time until you finish the big ones?
But yeah, i could definitely improve my parries.

Pesky ones for me would be those snake ones, cocodemon, pinky rider, that brain thingy with a gun etc. Revenant too.

Unless you take these out, they will keep attacking while you deal with the main one.

The ones that spawn all the time, they don't do much. Mostly there for you to recharge health and armour.

Game becomes somewhat trivial once you've unlocked *that* stake gun ability on parry.

I was real negative on this game a couple of days ago, but after pushing through a couple of boring levels it picks back up. Introduces some new enemies and weapons. The story gets pretty cool at the end. Overall I ended up liking it. I'm glad I didn't drop it. Now I'm going back through Doom 2016.

Oh yeah. I love it but its kicking my ass sometimes. The leader battles have been pretty easy but some of the other encounters to unlock wraithstones and rubies are super tough sometimes.

Got stuck for a long time in a chamber in chapter 14 with an agaddon hunter and a revenant and they kept wrecking me, until I changed the shield runes from daggers to ground fissure. That helped a lot, and using the flail more proactively. It was tough keeping an eye on the revenant while also staying inside melee range with the hunter, and then also parrying his double swings and overhead smash.

This is the same feeling I had. I just beat it and I give it a 4/5, using the full scale.

I still prefer Doom Eternal and I don't remember enough about Doom 2016 to have a good opinion on it. I think Doom the Dark Ages is definitely good and its problems are not any big things but a lot of small problems. Doom Eternal had fewer issues but the issues it did have were more severe.

Revenant you just throw your shield at it and it's stuck for 4 seconds. From there just shoot it 3 times with your super shotgun and it's done. Easy peesy.

Yeah but it respawns as long as hunter is up

At least thats what I started doing - nuking the revenant and then another spawned in

But shield throw is super useful, I just forget to use it

Yeah, it's more annoying than anything and the Hunter to me is similar to the Marauder in Eternal, depending on the distance it has a different mechanic, but it's much easier, just stand close and parry+Mace is God mode.

Beaten the game at UV, 120% speed, parry window small.
The combat is great, Hugo Martin knows what he's doing, but the rest for me is a mixed bag.

I'm not even talking about the useless and embarrassing story or the extremely underwhelming soundtrack.
My main gripe is exploration.

They tried somehow to catch the original formula, a welcome for me, but is too tied to secrets and collectibles, while the level design is full of invisible walls and platforming is contradictory. The flow of most of the levels is a broken mess where you compulsively activate the map instead of developing a direct relationship with the environment.

Out there is plenty of modders and indie devs capable of deliver a far, far, far better result than this crap

Now I'm replaying the beefiest fights at Nightmare, 150% speed.
LOL, is like playing Eternal with totems always on, but is funny

Guys if you like Mick Gordon check out this Argent Metal music. It's really nice. They could have gone with this guy for TDA soundtrack.

Now that Im done with Clair, started this up properly, Nightmare ofc, 130% gamespeed, parry windows at lowest. So far Im 6/7 chapters in, collected everything, did every challenge and I gotta say, I was worried about the doomsayers, no pun intented, but the game is amazing just like Eternal but in a different way. Doom Eternal is my fav shooter of all time and I have no issues enjoying this ones exploration and gameplay. Finding secrets is the same as before and I dont find them easier than Eternal at all, I found Eternal ones super easy as well. It has more Serious Sam vibes than Doom, but its cool, they had to try something new. Story has badass vibes as usual, but sadly since its a prequel I know everything thats going to happen which kinda sucks. No issues with the music either, Mick did a great job but I personally only liked like 3 or 4 songs out of all the ost and seems to be the case here as well. Def a goty contered for me alongside Clair.

Ravager absolutely shreds.

I made a mistake of prioritising pulvuriser, its fine. But now that I have fully upgraded ravager, I think its my favourite gun in this game, and in a long time.

I have set it to higher firing rate when charged up, it takes a while to get there, but its a sight to behold.

Its a straight line of fire at highest speeds? Like an LMG/AR thing?

Because the pulverizer is really good for mowing down wide groups of enemies, with the wide spread.

It focuses on one demon at a time. If you want to take out a big one on priority, its good.

Apart from good damage, I find it to be most satisfying to use and play with.

I just finished the game and I can understand why is it flopping in some ways as I also have mixed feelings.

The main problem is the lack of innovation.

The game is awesome, it's Doom from id, of course it is. If you love the franchise, you will love this as well.

But this is mostly the same game from 2016, from almost 10 years ago, with reused animations, gameplay mechanics, etc. At that time that game was (and still is) one of the best games ever. Insane nextgen visuals, with top of the industry animations, it felt new and unique gameplay wise. A huge jump from lastgen games in every sense. Eternal was also awesome and they went even further on the same console gen but I hated the immersion breaking floating gamey looking powerups, secrets etc. And I thought they got enough criticsm for this but no, they doubled down with this bullshit in Dark Ages and the crazy contrasting colors are insanely immersion breaking for the ammo, the enemy projectiles, etc., they look horrible with the otherwise awesome artstyle a design. I don't know why couldn't they have at least provided an option to tone these down…

So here we have Dark Ages which is a current gen exclusive game, yet it barely if it even looks better than the previous game from 5 years ago. This f'n raytracing feels like one of the biggest gimmicks ever and it should have been left to nextgen because we are not there yet and it is laughable what it provides for such a huge performance cost. I don't care how big an achievement it is for developers because I'm a gamer who is just looking at the visuals and not checking the code behind them.

id could have been the dev team who could have melted our faces and provide a real jump in visuals but like others before them, they went this way resulting in visuals that could pass as a ps4 game on pics. Yes, the physics are cool, that's true. But it was not worth it. This is not what we expect from id.
They should have used the available resources in other ways and blow away the industry with a similar game that Doom 2016 was at its time. This is no different than for example CoD or Assassin's Creed. But they don't take 5 years between instalments. The formula is a bit tired now and it also lacks the technical jump that we expect from id. It also lacks the polish the previous games had, I remember reading from others that it's a bit like it was made by the B team and this is what I felt sometimes as well.

And for all the above, the game became maybe one of most expensive games ever to buy. With almost nothing on the physical disc at all. And making it available on gamepass day one, basically making sure it flops. Yes, I know all these are on Microsoft and how much they suck, but I'm sad they did this with one of my favorite devs.

Despite all the above, as I said, the game is awesome, most of the levels are really cool, except a couple of levels (like the forest) that seemed like filler, but there are some insanely good ones, like the last one. I hope this is not the end for id but Doom should go for a rest and they should reinvent it to have the deserved acclaim again. Until then they should reboot Quake because the snippets we saw from that in this game were really cool.

I want to highlight again, that the game is awesome despite all this, but I wanted more from it.

After writing this post, I wanted to check out how it feels playing Doom 2016 after Dark Ages, and wtf, I'm speechless. First of all, I honestly think it looks better than Dark Ages. The graphics are clean, this shitty noisiness and flickering everywhere in Dark Ages is nowhere to be found in Doom 2016. And this is not even a native PS5 game, it only got a PS4 Pro patch (higher res). Sorry, raytracing in its current form is a big scam from a user standpoint.

But the gameplay is also somehow better, it's more "up close and personal" fighting with the demons, all of them are an enemy you have to fight, not just some cannon fodder that fall into pieces just by looking at them. I don't know, the whole game is just more immersive. And despite this, you still feel like a demon killing machine.

Somehow the levels also feel like more handcrafted than in Dark Ages. Everything feels insanely coherent.

It's still a 10/10 game for me after all these years. And based on this, Dark Ages can't be more than an 8 if I'm generous.

I feel its a great game. That said, how much you enjoy it depends on where you are coming from.

I enjoyed Doom 2016, but I wasn't blown away by it. I feel a lot of good boomer shooters come close to it these days.

But I was completely blown away by Eternal. IMO its best shooter ever made.

Doom TDA, I had zero hype for it. They showcased large areas, with none of tense encounters from Eternal. I was pretty much sure it would fall behind Eternal. Just wanted to see how much behind it really was.

To my surprise, it doesn't feel like a major downgrade over Eternal. I feel they are pretty close.

I think plays quite differently from 2016 in terms of innovation. 2016 doesn't have shield or parrying for instance. I guess if expectation of innovation is ground breaking originality then i guess so, but I cant really think any other game that had that let alone sequel.
