Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Games are games. We can have an intelligent discussion on whether or not they're going to sell the platform to X demographic or not. We can also have an intelligent discussion on whether or not NeoGAF (arguably "core" gamers) would like them or not, but these are two completely different discussions.

Outright disregarding games that will be available at launch because they don't fit into some nebulous "core" game description is disingenuous at best, and fanboyish at worst. Both MS and Sony are trying to sell their boxes to as many people as possible, to pretend otherwise is foolish.
For sure. Right now it's just speculation based on what games (if any) the studios have done before. That doesn't mean they can't improve and it also doesn't mean quality is guaranteed.

If someone was a dedicated 24/7 Halo player, then Sony couldn't persuade him to switch to their platform even with 3x as many first-party franchises.

I just wanted to make a point, that despite GAF being made up of individuals with varying preferences, there is a selection bias inherit in the user-base here of which you can derive overall likes and dislikes. And the game of the year popularity contest each year shows that.

The difference is only apparent in your head. You just wish it to be true. Again... There will be tears in 10 days.
You think MS will match the specs of the PS4?

This is pure wishful thinking, the difference is massive and will most certainly be apparent in the "real world".

At least when we were fighting with polygon numbers, we had a vague idea of how 1 million polys looked compared to 10 millions (and it was already mostly pointless at the time).
But honestly who knows how many TFlops or how much RAM bandwidth a game like, say, a next gen GTA would require ? All those spec numbers are now too big to have a real practical meaning.

I always found the console warriors fighting over that stuff funny since a good 99% of them didn't program nor did they truly understand the shit they copy pasted.

Confirmed by Kotaku, and then ridiculed by Pachter:

i87cCXoazKkrZ.gif

Obviously we're never going to get straight-forward confirmation on secrets that juicy.

I see. 21st can´t come soon enough.

For once i am glad that we have 6 hours time difference between us and New York haha. I can watch it at 6-7 pm while poo poo Sony hold their conference at 3 am here.

I think 2011 was the year where fatigue set in for first party development for all the consoles. It's been terrible ever since. Which is why I don't understand the hate for MS or get the abandoning the core arguement.

Yeah I agree. Both Judgement and Ascension were entertaining but left 0 impression on me. These franchises need a serious rest. I'm really curious what Epic is doing since we have no indication at this point.

Yeah, it's tiring, but a direct result of no show from MS after three months of straight positivity resulting from the slow-dissipating afterglow of February's PS4 presentation. A console fan's mind can be bent on the attack or defense given such contrast in feelings about the future. Because there's so much currently unknown/unconfirmed with all of these rumors and bits of evidence with incomplete context flying around, it's really an 'I'm rubber, you're glue' relationship with every other unanswered question left to ask. MS will probably lay most of the negativity to rest on the 21st. I think they know how much their first impression matters in light of its renewed competition with Sony for mindshare. Early-gen MS certainly has been regularly impressive for the core gamer with the first two XBOXes.

I hope so. If they do a repeat of the 360 reveal things could get ugly in here

Please tell me people were not citing it seriously?
They were. It's kinda questionable how this thread is still open too when the one in the OP was one of the more ridiculous ones, claiming to have knowledge of the state of both hardware and software internally at both Sony and MS.

This thread has barely even talked about the rumor in the OP. It's kind of just been the general Durango rumor thread for a while.

Doesn't matter what they do. Someone on the other side of the fence or with an agenda will find some fault with it. Besides, even if it's a little embarrassing with its debut, E3 is a few weeks away instead of a month or so, like last time. I don't think MS has a ton of room to maneuver with expectations being so high, yet so undefined. By E3 things will be solid and by launch, better still...just like every generation. Remember when people kept insisting that E3 matters in the end only to see how it didn't every single time? It's only for the fans and critics, really. As a member on a forum filled with both, it's gonna be some primetime, must-argue fun. Shit's kinda more fun than current gen gaming, really.

So, twice confirmed then? :p

On the contrary: Pachter mentioned on his show that he thought the rumour is probably correct, but that such delays are very common for launch situations and, therefore, nothing out of the ordinary.

So, in your opinion, the presentation can only turn out great: Everyone that won't be pleased with Microsoft declarations will, by necessity, be a console warrior?

The fact that E3 was resurrected from the undead pretty much tells us that it is an important trade show to the gaming industry at large.

Well, that's quite the one sided scenario.

So, in your opinion, the presentation can only turn out great: Everyone that won't be pleased with Microsoft declarations will, by necessity, be a console warrior?
Dunno how you read that from my post, but I meant that there would be the usual thing that happens after some big event from one of the competitors. Happens after every E3 and major platform-holder press event. I never said that they couldn't have a bad or disappointing show and that people couldn't be legit with their less than positive reaction. Maybe what I was saying should have just been taken as being too-obvious to the point of worthlessness.

The fact that E3 was resurrected from the undead pretty much tells us that it is an important trade show to the gaming industry at large.
I meant that 'winning' E3 never translated into anything serious outside of a bunch of posts. The GAF reaction isn't shared by the rest of the world. Of course, it's the biggest single marketing opportunity of the year.

Well yeah, according to GAF every company won every E3 and every company lost every E3.

It's going to be fun this year because the mainstream press are making a return and will be there to cover the new console launches. They will determine what is and isn't interesting enough to pass along to their viewers/readers.

Are you trying to imply, that GAF's game of the year winners are picked because of bias, and not their quality?

Surely you're not implying that the "everything" in "It Only Does Everything" is referring to something other than games? Shock!

But yeah, the goal of everyone is to own the living room. Even Nintendo tried to do that with TVii.

I dont understand how people buy into sonys PR bs about just being a game machine. They are pretty clearly devoted to being an entertainment device in the same vein as the new Xbox, the 360 and their own PS3. They've been doing this since the fucking PS2

To many people Sony can truly do no wrong, then only make temporary mistakes. While MS is OMG ALL ABOUT TEH MONIES. It's strange.

It's because for the last 3 years they've been shoving Kinect down our throats whilst relying on 3rd parties and not much first party development.

Hopefully that changes. If the Nextbox reveal is full of Kinect then there will be backlash from GAF.

They said just a games machine? And that's what people on Gaf bought?

The problem with that is that GAF in no way represents the large market that these companies want to sell to. It's fine if you don't like motion gaming or navigation, but saying one company is going to lose because they implement it better is quite ignorant.

They said just a games machine?

GAF did.

Yeah I always found it funny that some people chooses to swallow everything they are being fed and led from these companies. What is, is, nothing much changes because of PR-speak. Sure there are tendencies, trends and goals, but in the bigger picture I think PS4 and Durango will end up even more similar than today. ...Well, at least that's my guess until we actually get to know more about the Durango.

Of course it can do multiple things, but games are their number one priority. They don't sacrifice game performance for multimedia functions or gimmicks.

Large power differences matter. I agree with that. But when you're talking minor differences, and stuff like GDDR5 vs 3, consumers aren't going to care. They're going to go where the content they want is. 3DS is clobbering the Vita. Wii demolished PS3/ 360 despite being weak. It has Wii Sports though. I realize I sound like a broken record, but content is king.

Wii certainly gave shovelware developers the opportunity to make money, no doubt there.

can you show this? this is new to me.

.

Will online play remain free? “We totally believe that we want to provide more functionality and more services and more content on the network. And so we are looking at how we are going to structure that. And we are not ready to talk about that.”

Shuhei Yoshida said yesterday that the PlayStation 4 won’t block access to pre-owned games. Whilst we’ve no doubt that that’s entirely true, what Eurogamer didn’t question is whether this means that the block will only be removed via an online purchase, much in the same way that online passes work now. You get a secondhand game, and then pay a fee to unlock it.

That’s speculation, of course, Sony aren’t talking details just yet. That said, Yoshida has today said that, when asked by GameSpot, activation codes are down to the publisher. “It’s a publisher decision,” he said, before adding that “we are not talking about it, sorry.” It’s not clear whether this is in reference to the current online pass style system, though.

Point being SonyGAF is all too eager to let Sony off the hook for stuff that they have been asked about but REFUSE to answer for their fans because their answer may be unpopular, and simultaneously denigrate MS for imagined slights which aren't even based in reality.

I've only had my account activated so I haven't yet been able to contribute much to the PS3, Durango conversation, but I have been lurking for awhile.

That said the way I've seen GAF react to each companies consoles is when Sony said "We're going to be the number one place for games, social networking and entertainment" people go OMG SONY IS ONLY ABOUT GAMES, THEY LOVE US GAMERS, but when Microsoft says "We want Durango to be the games, TV, and entertainment center of the living room" people scream OMG MS IS FOCUSING ON ENTERTAINMENT. THEYVE ABANDONED US GAMERS. Obviously I'm using hyperbole, but that's just what I've observed.

I guarantee Microsoft is going to come out and say the exact same things as Sony and they'll get crucified for it because people looked at the last few years with Kinect and think that's the future, it isn't. Every console towards the end of a gen turns towards the casual crowd to try and boost sales because "hardcore" gamers already have the console anyways. Will Kinect be a part of the next Xbox? Yeah. Will they be as Kinect centered as the last few years? No, because that's not what makes them money.

I think gamers don't fully get how business in the world works. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo don't want your love and affection, they want your money. I remember a Michael Eisner quote that really struck me awhile ago. He said something to the effect of "Disney's goal isn't to make dreams come true, it's to make money" and the same goes with the games industry. It's stupid for fanboys to argue who cares about who more.

Me? Whatever company presents the games that you want, get that console first and the other one later. I got the N64 first, then the PS; then the PS2 first, then Xbox, and this gen it was 360 first, PS3 second.

Whew, end rant. Again, it's my opinion and opinions CAN be wrong, it's just how I see things right now and we'll find out a LOT more after the 21st.

You're attacking a ridiculously stupid strawman. "People" don't believe that, they just think, and rightfully so, that Sony is devoted to game development and is building a console focused on core gaming. That does not mean that they don't want PS4 to become THE entertainment centre of your living room.

Welcome, dude.

But those comments are simply the result of (the rumors) we've heard so far... Sony focusing on games and making development easier and Microsoft making things difficult (for indies for example) and showing more interest in entertainment in general rather than just games... that being said, it's important to not forget that those are all rumors... that's all^^
