Naughty Dog Announces Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

I believe they just re-scanned her face for Spider-Man 2. The actress has sharp facial features compared to when she was younger with a full face. On top of all of this, the character models in Spider-Man 2 are not that great compared to a lot of other triple A games.

No, people were upset that they made Black Cat bi. The mission was to help her to get her girlfriend in Paris.

The deaf mission was considered inclusive.
The side mission where you help a gay couple was considered woke.

Having to play as her wasn't the issue, they considered it woke because they made her powerful.

All of this added up to the game being "woke."
I don’t remember the black cat or deaf criticisms. But maybe those happened on gaf but I didn’t remember.

The character has nothing to do with MJ from the comics so that's fairly criticized. Her writing is as bad as her looks. That's NOT MJ. Period.

Spiderman 2 has woke elements and terrible writing that hinder the experience, but still it's a Spiderman game with good gameplay and top-notch production values.

On the other hand, nobody complains about the Spiderverse movies. Guess why? Because they are brilliant.

All the successful "woke" games are ignored because it doesn't fit the narrative. People were shitting on Hades II for their designs, but it has over 100k peak CCU on Steam was swept under the rug. No one brings up Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarok after the sales announcement. Baldur's Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy are both used by the anti-woke crowd, but those games would be considered "woke" as well. People bashed ugly character designs in Silent Hill 2, but Konami considers it a success and it was never mentioned again.

After episode 3 of The Last of Us, people said they would stop watching The Last of Us TV series because it was too woke.

Viewership increased the next episode and sales increased for both games during and after the show ended.

It's possible people may not like this game because success is not guaranteed, but my prediction is that the hatred for the main character's design won't be as loud as we move closer to the game's release. If Naughty Dog hits it out of the park with the game play then I think that's what most people are going to be talking about.

They get ignored because almost every woke game that becomes successful is either a sequel to a very popular game/franchise or is based on some massively popular IP that is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. WOW, the sequel to the best selling PS4 exclusive based on one of the most popular superheroes sold well despite adding woke shit? What a shocker!!!!.
The first proper AAA Harry Potter game that let's you explore Hogwarts and become a student and join a house sold well despite its added woke elements? Astounding!!!!

"Woke" doesn't sell. I'd argue it's not a dealbreaker for most people (unless it's extreme) but generally woke products aren't able to stand on their own unless they attach themselves to an IP that's already popular to begin with. What's the last new IP that was heavily infused with woke elements and became as successful as Elden Ring, or Dying Light, or Ghost of Tsushima, or The Witcher, or Wukong, or Cyberpunk. Not counting games that launch with none or very little of this stuff and only started going all in on it once they were already successful (like Overwatch or TLOU).

That said I also think there are a lot of crazies out there that call everything woke, which is an inherent problem with the word itself as it has no specific definition.
Personally I don't think a game is instantly woke for having a female lead or LGBT characters.I'm not particularly excited about Intergalatic because I don't really like the modern ND style (their only modern game I really liked was The Lost Legacy), but I can at least appreciate them doing a new IP instead of going the easy route of using an established franchise.

Women in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s in some cases, have never looked as good as they look today
You are missing the point.
Joel looks old.
Yet is still an attractive man.

Today's older women that look good that you are referring to, look much younger than their actual years, thanks to various factors, most of which were driven by that desire to look younger.

I don't find women in their 20s as attractive as a good looking 30, 40, or 50 year old.

They predicted the woke elements in Spider-Man 2 would hurt sales.

The anti-woke didn't complain much about Hogwarts because they wanted to see a J. K. Rowling IP succeed. She's hated within the LBGTQ community.

Yes, it's not a dealbreaker and that's the point. It's not a major issue with most gamers.

You want me to name a NEW IP that was heavily infused with woke elements (which is rare by the way) that has sold more than 20 million copies. Do you know how RARE it is for a game to sell 20+ million copies?

Here's some info.

Most games in the top 50 are sequels or spin-offs of existing franchises. Call of Duty, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, and Grand Theft Auto.

- Elden Ring is a Souls Game and it's viewed as such.
- Cyberpunk 2077 is a CD Projekt RED game. That's why it was one of the most hyped games of all time.
- Witcher 3 is a sequel and not a new IP.
- Wukong is a rarity. It's one of the fastest-selling games of all time.

It's rare for a new IP to reach 20 million copies sold, even for games that are not heavily infused with "woke" elements.

I did miss your point, mainly because it didn't make much sense for grammatical reasons. I just felt like expressing what I felt in my initial reply.

The problem with you post is that it doesn't include the 90 other example that people "use" to say things are woke. And that's my point.
The problem with your post is that it doesn't answer the question asked, but waves some vague "there are things, ya know" yet again.

It should not be hard to mention exact cases of non-woke stuff being regarded as woke, if you are arguing in good faith.

Also, as you are not on "that" forum, don't bee too shy to state what you actually think. You won't be banned for it. Certainly not perma banned.

Let me pretend I believe that grammar had anything to do with it.

The criticism Spider-Man 2 received.

- Making Mary Jane uglier.
- Making Mary Jane powerful.
- Gay and deaf side mission
- Black Cat missing
- Mary Jane and Peter's relationship.

You can find these discussions online. There was backlash from the anti-woke crowd.
Thanks for concrete example.
The "making uglier" strikes me, as I recall the same being stated about Horizon, yet not seeing it in the expansion.
Actually making women uglier is... pretty woke, is it not?
Why would MJ be powerful, besides the woke reasons?

Not sure what is meant by black cat missing (I'm not that good with SM lore I guess) or what happened with their relationships. If they are no longer romantic, that's pretty woke to me too.

Gay mission, as in "what kind of people do you f*ck" being brought into the game is... fairly woke? What would be the non-woke reason to bring in sexual orientation of a random char in a game?

I'm totally being serious, I didn't understand your comment.
Yeah, that's rather possible, sorry about that.

I hope I remember it correctly: you have given instances of "woke" being shouted when nothing is woke.

Hades:
Is your point that having disproportional number of POC characters not woke or that it doesn't have too many POC chars?
Are trans looking chars not woke, or doesn't Aphrodite look like a trans woman?

BG3:
Hm, so having pronouns options in a game is not woke?
A side note: did it ever occur to native English speakers that just because English language happens to have only cases: common and possessive it does not mean that so do other languages, coug.

AW:
Sweet Baby Inc is not woke???

It doesn't have to be 20 million. We can also go with something like Days Gone (which was around 7+ million by 2022).
It doesn't even have to be something that was a big hit from day 1, it can be something like The Witcher or Dark Souls that grew from relatively niche hits into big successful franchises over time.

The only condition is that they need to have displayed these "woke" elements from the beginning, none of the "it was added in DLC" or "it was added in the sequel after the first game was a big hit" or "actually some comic released 6 months after the game reveals that..."

Just because they worked on the game doesn't make it woke.

But my biggest point was jumping on what DForce DForce was saying. When a so-called "woke" game sells great and does great in the ratings, the "anti-woke" never acknowledge it. The "Go Woke, Go Broke" statement just gets thrown in the garbage. Now they all use Concord as the Woke game of choice, but never mention BG3.

Pardon my ignorance, I need examples of totally non-woke stuff considered woke please.
The example the woman used was the point. Her argument is that they made Joel ugly due to "woke" and she was "fixing" the model to make him look more attractive. Kind of like how people are taking Tati and making her look like a Korean K-pop singer sucking through a straw.

Sorry, but I don't care which side they come in from, anyone who puts such significance on the race/gender/sexuality/political identity of a game protagonist that they get irate about it, is just a fool in my book.

Looking through that lens, the inevitable result is "only characters who fit certain criteria is acceptable". Is that really where we want to be creatively ?

I understand how we have arrived at this point, but it doesn't sit well with me how blindly reactionary a lot of the criticism is.
I don't think its a healthy situation where people are so intent on rooting out "wokeness" that they will summarily reject a game out of hand because a certain element of it is detectable in its content or credits.
Being cautious, because *it is* aggravating to feel like you are getting preached at in your games is a sufficient response. Getting out the pitchforks and burning torches though...

Women do tend to like rugged male characters. I have seen a few female streamers damn near creaming their pants over Arthur Morgan.
Those people fell in love with the character and his demeanor not his wrinkles or grey hair. If he had less of that and acted the same they still would have loved him.

Joel is a very masculine man and most women would prefer that version of him to the toyboy of the second image. The person who tweeted that was either a teenager or had the brains of one. Zero life experience, anyway.

The comparison to Jordan is nonsensical. Speaking of which, I have no doubts that she's the sexual fetish of Neil or/and someone else. The same as Abby, or else we wouldn't have had the gratuitously cringe sex scene in TLOU 2.

Nonsense, they would fall in love with that second pic. Especially if he does what Joel does. He just loses his wrinkles and white hair looking younger and in better shape

You can even do a survey if you like and I bet most would choose the second image. It's not nonsensical. They're making fun of people concentrating too much on attractiveness of characters in a game as "woke" but from the perspective of the opposite sex.

All I got from that scene was the fact that Abby likes to get those cheeks clapped just as much as the next girl.

Also, 'beautiful Joel' looks a lot like that wolf guy from Twilight. Which was massive with women all around the world. Me, personally, am not sure if I ever saw Joel being claimed by women as hot or anything like that. I'm sure there are a few, but it's not hot for the masses.

The point is: If having hot characters is 'important for selling the game', Joel should look like the Twilight guy. I'm waiting for mods that make Joel look just the same as the Twilight guy. I want hot Joel.

This whole thing is so, so, so stupid. This narrative only works for Twitter engagement. These takes are not defensible because they're completely stupid in any real conversation.

Ah… I wouldn’t play Resident Evil 4 remake as much as I do if Leon looked like Homer. Go right ahead make all male video game characters attractive. I don’t give a shit. It’s a problem when devs purposely ugly fy attractive females just because a minor group thinks it’s objectifying them by keeping them attractive. So now all video game females from western devs are butt ass ugly.

In The Last of Us, Bill being Gay was revealed in the main game. There were no subtle hints at it and it was one of the main stories in that chapter.

Ghost of Tsushima features gay characters in side missions.

Detroit: Become Human featured a lesbian couple storyline. This game recently sold over 10 million copies.

Hell, even Cyberpunk 2077 features gay characters and options to make trans characters.

They are but I get what you're saying. The amount of women vs men who play TLOU is likely small in comparison (as with console gaming in general) but would you expect them not to play it or complain online/boycott because the MC is not conventionally attractive? Have they gone on message boards and said this is why they choose not to play TLOU, because Joel is 'ugly' and could look better and this is what they need to do to "fix it".

developers shouldn't need to make every character in a game generic looking supermodels to appeal to the most women and men. They're characters. I like Joel with his white hair and wrinkles. It gives them character. I don't want focus group tested slop and I'm sure people here would be the first to complain about focus groups in that scenario too. if they started testing exactly what amount of hair apealed to the most people, what amount of wrinkles, greys and started making some generic ass characters.

I think people wouldn't complain half as much about looks if the character in question didn't have that awful generic sassy attitude number #7. Stuff like Taash, dripping with modern-day baby talk sarcasm, laughable attempts to make her look "cool" and plot armor designed to make her the moral high ground no matter how hypocritical, its honestly multiple times more bothersome than the appearance. I'd say their looks are more of the cherry on top of all the checkboxes we know they're attempting to tick.

I'm not familiar with Taash from Dragon Age but I'll take your word for it. I've not seen enough of Jordan to judge her based on her actual character though.

Thats the thing, jordan is dripping with red flags, her appearance being one of those. People take notice of that. And NDs recent history does not help with that impression. It all comes down to the fact we all know why they made her like that, rather than the looks themselves.

Vasquez is a true hero who sacrifices herself for her comrades, making peace with the asshole guy before they die. By doing that she's already better than the hundred female "badass" characters in the last 10 years.

Woke writers are unable to understand, let alone create, a character like her. They can only mimic her looks but never her heroism, because they don't understand that concept.

According to the anti-woke crowd, these woke elements should've discouraged millions from buying the game, but that didn't happen.

Many examples of successful video games contain "woke" content.

But when there's a successful game there's always an excuse.

"It's a sequel to a beloved IP."
"It's a popular franchise."

Star Wars is based on a popular franchise and it wasn't successful.

There's enough evidence to show that "wokeness" in video games doesn't discourage the vast majority from buying video games.

Vasquez was not a main character it was a side one with a male counterpart that offered balance, and she definitely didnt look like an androgynous thing, at lewst she had some boobs 😅

The MC was Reapley and she is one of the great ones because she is not a insufferable overpowered girl boss androgynous quasi-male ugly "woman".

Can you name a single successful NEW IP where wokism is a central theme? I don't mean side minor elements (Horizon) but something unapologetically "in your face" as in Dragon Age.

There's none. The reason is that wokeness can't create anything new. Their productions are perverted copies of those created by better people.

Intergalactic might be the first one IF it turns out woke, something that we can't tell yet.
