I think you're missing the point people are trying to make.
Like it or not, we currently exist in a video gaming culture where a majority of western development teams are consciously and deliberately trying to pull their games away from appealing to the largest cross section of the gaming audience.
Whether you're comfortable with it or not, this is indeed a controversial thing to do - and has been met in the recent past with the failure of AAA games. That Naughty Dog are seemingly going down the same path is disappointing for many.
Gamers respond best to characters that either represent them, they empathise with, or that they find attractive. There has to be a connection formed for a game to be successful. After all, you 'become' the character when you play the game.
How many of that largest console and PC gaming audience are going to want to play as this character, given how similar it is to many other failed characters in recent games - all of which have consciously been designed not to appeal to them?

That's a good point. I don't have a problem with the character, but I'd change her for one of those in a heartbeat to not have this vitriol around the game. Sucks being a fan of Naughty Dog games and constantly having discussion go sideways because of stuff like this.

Yep, it's a Cuckmann original product, the second he's ever made fully. (UC4 was taken over mid development so he could only partially ruin it)

This does rather feel like Naughty Dog being a little too big headed for their own good. They think they can make a game with whatever protagonist they like, and damn the response from a large cross section of their audience - who have proved repeatedly that they won't buy games with characters they don't like - to the tune of millions of lost dollars.

I like the visual aesthetic - not trying to go for photorealistic but just very detailed cartoony look. Eyes are well done, so they get to do a lot of acting and that almost never happens in games. I don't even mind the main character, but holy shit, this smells of everything I dislike about ND. Trying to go for something a bit more lighthearted but still ending up super forced and dull.

It probably won't be released for 3 years too. Maybe even a PS6 game. ND always releases a big game final year of a console. And this is probably it unless they also got lou3 in the works.
As an alternate choice, they could had made Factions 2.
