show you work

The works that inspired this game predate GoTG, so you'd have to give us some examples of what exactly you are talking about....like actually prove your point...

I literally made a list. If you can't be bothered to go back through people's posts, that's up to you dude.

Tonally, sure, it’ll be totally different.

But on a surface level, a plucky main character who is obsessed with the 80’s, playing into nostalgia with loads of references, obvious product placement… there’s no denying that it was made by someone who watched Guardians of the Galaxy and was heavily influenced by it. The tone of the story will be entirely different, but they chose to show what they did for obvious reason, which is to draw comparison.

And to be clear, it’s not even to say anything shown looks “bad” per se. But it’s pretty tired territory.

I don't think most people were hating on Concord because of the retro-sci fi aspect of things. It was the awful character designs and how everything was cheery and cornball to the extreme.

You may not like the MC in Intergalactic, but it's definitely not a cheery looking game. Whatever comparisons to GoTG other than being a space adventure pretty much stop there. It's not a comedy or light hearted title. It has a Trent Reznor soundtrack and harkens back to a grittier type of aesthetic in general. So I don't think it's "tired" at all. This most certainly isn't some Marvel movie like many people just throw out there as a hot take.

Your comparison ignores so many other properties that Guardians of the Galaxy itself not so subtlety borrowed from. Even the anime sequence at the beginning of the Intergalactic trailer indicates that this is paying homage to media from the 80s.

'It doesn't copy from Guardians Of The Galaxy, because it copies from other stuff that Guardians Of The Galaxy copies from as well. But it's not copying from Guardians Of The Galaxy, even though the stuff in it is also in Guardians Of The Galaxy.'

I'd stop trying to make an argument for this game not looking derivative. You're tripping over your own cleverness.

I'm not sold either to the protagonist. I really hope that there's more to her than what she looks like.
But wow, this soundtrack is perfect !

Straight from their blog post:
Intergalactic stars our newest protagonist, Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago. In fact, anyone who’s flown to it hoping to unravel its mysterious past was never heard from again. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.

Oh yeah. I completely forgot this one. I thought only 2, 3 and 4 had it.

Extremely boring character, shaved head space marine lady without any femininity, meh.
But it’s space and from the action snippet it looks like the most interesting ND game since like forever. Bring it! My Pro is ready! Release in 2025,2026,2027?

? but that doesn't really make any sense though...

Someone can be referencing the Yellow suit from Bruce Lee's Game Of Death

This being referenced in Kill Bill, does not mean Sifi is actually copying Kill Bill.

It fucking means BOTH works are referencing Game Of Death and paying respect to Bruce Lee

I'm not even sure why you didn't realize that lol

This fucking game takes place in alternate universe where the 80's is more advanced, which means how the fuck can it take reference from GoTG? It would more likely take reference from a source material that predates such a work

Good lord, not every reference in every piece of fiction is an equal thing that serves exactly the same purpose. Your quoting deliberately obtuse references that act as a full on homage... and are meant to be treated as such. Tarantino wants you to consciously think about Game Of Death. I doubt ND's intention was to make the audience think of GotG with this trailer - but people are doing it anyway.

And what does a game's fictional setting have to do with the real world fiction it's derivative of? That doesn't matter at all.

Loads of you are desperate to say that this trailer is not in any way derivative of GotG, because you don't want to think of Naughty Dog being derivative. This isn't about 'woke'. This isn't about her being female.

It's all about a tone, a style, and an aesthetic that is very derivative of another piece of very popular fictional entertainment. Along with a main character that feels very derivative of many recent games. And I frankly expected more of ND.

...having said that, The Last Of Us is derivative of countless zombie/infected horror movies, and that is a masterpiece, so we'll see how it goes.

ok, but you can think about what ever you want...

Thats like saying I'm thinking about that Ark scifi show, THUS this MUST have been referenced lol

Or...maybe you just thinking about it lol

And what does a game's fictional setting have to do with the real world fiction it's derivative of?

A lot. If its set in the 80's in some alternate timeline, it makes sense that its reference and influence would be from that timeline....

I....I don't know why you thought those didn't go hand in hand (i'm not even sure why you thought that wasn't relevant) lol

It's all about a tone, a style, and an aesthetic that is very derivative of another piece of very popular fictional entertainment
? can you list those exact things or?
That tone, style etc exist in other works though

As in...Yellow was not invented by Kill Bill.

You got to give me a bit more man, if you think its really referencing, inspired by GoTG, show your work, provide the actual photos and examples and we can talk about it, but it sounds like you just want that to be true vs actually having anything real to support that point.

If they are saying they made it based on those works, its their game to provide that detail as to say otherwise is a bit wild. Thats like you making a book and saying it was inspired by your love for NASCAR races and I start arguing with you that its not lol As if I'm YOU and I'm in your mind and will well you what inspired you lol Be like "sir, I JUST saw the Need For Speed film and I thought of your book, CLEARLY YOU MADE IT BASED ON THAT FILM LIAR" lol

When the actual developer tells you what inspired them, I don't see the need to claim otherwise, its their work and only they could confirm that.

Regardless, they have already confirmed what inspired them.
There is nothing to debate.

Ha ha. Bit rich coming from the man who describes it as 'dark, dystopian and like Blade Runner.'

It has The Pet Shop Boys in it.

Closer to Blade Runner than it is GotG.

I don't think it's an EXACT replica of what Blade Runner's theme is going for (and will have a bit more personality), but it's far more of a gritty sci-fi title than it is a comedy marvel hero game.

This is truth.

I got a lot of that based on the ship UI.

...show your work FunkMiller FunkMiller

lol i'm not just saying this to say it... if I see a design or a feature or something and it can be directly referenced, then a claim can be made that part of that work may have inspired this, but art direction is not about merely a "feeling", one must be able to objectively provide actual evidence to show where that actually is in order for it to be repeated, directed to other teams to create etc.

I do this even in my own work btw. I can't just be like "it gives me a feeling of xyz" or a "vibe" of xyz, I need an objective thing to reference from, not merely someone feelings on some shit, I need to see what you are referring to or it just sounds like you don't actually have a legit claim of anything...

Keep in mind, what James is saying is also correct, it doesn't need to be 1.1 carbon copy, as in you have directors that love Spielberg's continuous shots and got inspired by it and do something like that in their work...

Please understand this...that doesn't fucking mean the film 1917 is looking to copy E.T 1.1 as I don't think you get what is being referenced based on that inspiration as I think you believe it needs to be like this exact replica or something lol

That isn't some wild thing, merely means you don't get what is being shown lol Which isn't shocking as most on this thread seem not to even know a fuck ton about that genre based on whats being stated.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of my favorite games of the past decade. However, that would not be the case if I did not get to stair at Ms. Croft's perfect tits and ass the entire game and instead had to look at some ambiguously-lesbian type character who was intentionally made UGLY. I likely would have stopped playing after the first 30 minutes if that is how it actually turned out.

You have absolutely no idea what the theme of this game is, beyond ‘bounty hunter’ which isn’t what Deckard is in Blade Runner anyway.

Meanwhile, the trailer has a character who plays 80s pop music in a diagetic manner, using Sony equipment.

I think I’m comfortable with my impression it’s more GotG than Blade Runner at the moment.

You’re a perfectly normal and reasonable person. There’s nothing to question about that statement at all. Life did you well.

Agreed. They don't hate men. But they do consciously want to push back against the male gaze, and the dominance of the male audience in the gaming industry. Which they are perfectly entitled to do. But the audience is also perfectly entitled to dislike this, and not buy the product.

They have every right, but here's the thing.

Why weren't there major complaints about Abby's appearance when she was first revealed in 2017?

People think they made Aloy "ugly" in Horizon Forbidden West, but they show her face shots of her face looking fat even though she doesn't look that way in the final game.

Now you have people complaining about Ciri. They're using the worst shot of her to prove she's ugly.

Sun directly in her face.

This is why it's hard for me to take people's complaints seriously.

I understand why people don't want to play with a bald woman in Intergalactic. They should offer customizable character options if they're truly about "player freedom" in their game. I think may alleviate *some* of the negative feedback this game is getting.

There are no doubt some shitty and ugly character designs, but I think some people are just complaining (for example Ciri and Aloy) just to complain.

I think this again harkens back to modern gaming development where there is zero originality.just as in movies now the issue is the people that are hired have zero imagination and mostly make games based off what they already know and their political views. It's a bad time we are in .back when nerds made games it was more fun

No. Show me the green cornball clown monsters

Blade Runner?

Ya, sure looks like Blade Runner to me. lol. This is the kind of stuff in superhero movies battling giant aliens and robots.

I said it borrows tonally from blade runner. Definitely the soundtrack and scene with the mysterious eye patch lady

Obviously, it’s its own thing and a video game, but GOTG? No

It was not a joke--imagine playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider with the hideous character from Intergalactic instead. Nintendo has gone out of its way in the past to discuss how they make their characters "likable." They do not go for crap like ND has, so why does ND do it at all?

Most big budget media are pretty predictable. Lots of crazy production values and FX, but usually a shallow story and dialogue. The directors in charge seem to spend more time analyzing how good the green screen effects are than the actual plot.

The most innovative stuff comes from quirky indie games and movies. Problem is they will be less known, probably have crap production values, and for consumers who like star power the media probably wont have it.

A company/studio can take those big budgets and make a Memento kind of plot if they really wanted to fuck with the minds of people too. But they will almost always prefer a happy ending from a repetitive plot.

I know it wasn't a joke. My post was the joke. If you think that playing as a hot woman is integral for your enjoyment, I'm not sure what can >anyone< say to you. It's really extremely depressing.

...based on what?

You haven't even provided any example for us to even discuss anything about that claim...

I think you just want it to be about that, thats it.

I don't think you have any proof of this or anything logical to support your point. If you just have some feeling about that, leave it at that, but I see no reason to debate the findings that many of us pointed out about why we think its inspired by something or referencing something, if you seem to have nothing to support its about GoTG or something lol

Obviously, it’s its own thing and a video game, but GOTG? No

I don't see it.

Its not to say it wasn't inspired by it, but I'd need to see something more tangible on what funk is talking about. Maybe we see something later in game that is really from GoTG like some animal friend or more crew join your ship or something

They've yet to provide 1 screenshot or example or anything made in GoTG that this is using as inspiration or referenced from or anything of the sort.

Even the whole claim someone made a few pages back about some humor, that was a lot of Sci-fi's back then, like Robo Cop, Judd Dredd

Been posted multiple times already, but just going to point out again that in the video she does not say "you can't just accept it, you MUST embrace it".

She says:

"As far as with non-binary and transgender, I hope that we just start seeing that the future is here whether we like it or not. We need to not just accept it, but embrace it"

The video is below. I don't agree with her, but if grummz is going to quote her then he needs to quote her accurately. But obviously that doesn't work with this "forced you into the cult" nonsense he is preaching so he changed what she said. Shows a complete lack of integrity on his part.

In any case, I'd say the vast majority of VAs in gaming probably agree with her so......who cares? Those are her personal views. Nothing more.

Bro it's not about playing hot women, it's about playing a female looking women. That lead looks basically like a man. It's actually even less inklusive if you have to design your women to be like a man than you are a problem actually.

LOL Grummz. The guy who worked for Blizzard 20 years ago and then went on to get ousted from a company he founded after spending $3 million on an boss to promote his failure of an MMO. He's a grifter who has accomplished absolutely nothing in his adult life and spends his time attaching himself to culture war bullshit in a desperate attempt at relevancy.
