After watching the trailer, I'm quite hyped for the next reveal. It sounds real good.
I liked :
- the design of the ship. It has some serious Japan anime vibe to it (Porsche logo is bad though I hate in-game advertising).
- the character design. She looks interesting. Some Ripley's in her due to the bald head but also some kind of density.
- technically pristine: the effort in the details is staggering yet not overdone.
- this is a new IP ! . We should all celebrate this .

Sold for the moment and hoping for a stellar gaming experience.

Note : oh and I skipped most of the "discussion" here. It's as if some are paid here by a concurrent developer/editor and try to convince the others that the game is not worth it (when they know shit about it by the way) based on some character design that does not fit their agenda. Painful to read and a total lack of respect for those (like me) who dig the character design.

I do not for one second believe this influx of women-lead video games is a natural result of the work force becoming more female.

This is easily proven too - the % of working population has completely failed to significantly change as result of all the DEI in tech - especially in western countries.
That being said - influx of women-protagonist led games has been on-going for at least a decade now - yet we're in this continuous cycle of 'why is this happening all of a sudden' complaints. It's like time just stopped for some.

But my real opinion of this game itself is that the 80's aesthetic is so tired by this point.

I mean - it's definitely been done to death, but then again some cultural elements just transcend trends and become a permanent fixture. And I've sort of started to accept the 80ies to be one (as you said - it's been awhile). But indeed - this is also why this trailer felt so cynically engineered - there's nothing of note in it at all - it's just an assembly of familiar elements/callbacks that are supposedly driving interest/engagement, and that's the extent of it.
Which makes that comparison I made to RPO all the more noteworthy - at that was an entire movie (AND book) that is dedicated entirely to that (and the particular decade of culture history).

Sony and Naughty Dog want to be movies so badly, and I think video games trying to only emulate that side of the medium is a mistake.

That ship has sailed decades ago though. Videogames have been desperately trying to be hollywood dating all the way into 90ies, and what looks to be the most expensive game ever built (that may never release at all - but whatever) is entirely built on one man's ego trip to revisit his holywood ambitions. NDD has just been tagging along on this same train ride since the beginning - and while yes - they've - certainly shaped everyone elses approach to it (hell we got an entire TR trilogy trying to be a Naughty Dog game and doing it poorly at that), it's just the larger trend everyone's been on from the start.
But I wouldn't blame the industry alone on this - when Kojima went crazy with extremely long cutscenes, at least he still got flack for it. In 2024 though? We got a 1.5 hour cutscene celebrated by millions because it featured 30seconds of 'gameplay'.

Anyway I digress - I think most people have come to expect NDD cinematic story telling to be a bit special, so I'm ok with the cinematic focus. But - this trailer fell completely flat on even hinting why it would be continuing said trend.

Trailer looked really slick, I quite liked the aesthetic, or at least how they framed it in the trailer.

It's 80's retro-futurism, but not the overused Ridley Scott kind where it's all dark greys and smokey, it actually reminded me more of Back to the Future Part II, especially the more optimistic colour palette and the focus on corporate design language and branding, and I guess Cowboy Bebop would be the other most obvious inspiration.

But in the back of my brain I just couldn't ignore that, well, a Concord character could have walked into shot and not looked that out of place, so Naughty Dog are walking a really thin line.

Guessing you can't customise the main character given they are in those photographs etc, hard to judge from trailer alone, but I really hope they make them relatable and likeable, and not just "strong boss bitch" character-type who I wouldn't want to lend my golf clubs too.

Yes ,you can. There was nothing going on in the trailer reveal to garner anger. Naughty Dog reveal the character and some crazy people got super butt hurt over nothing.

You can feel whatever way you want about those people. But they exist, and there's a significant amount of them. You can write them all off as morons or trolls, but that's just rejecting reality.

Everyone's judging the game from a single short trailer. The people who like it, and the people who dislike it too. Do you think it's silly that people are hyped for this too? Or are you selective in that?

I think it's very reasonable to lose interest in a game for any reason. It can be the graphics, music, gameplay, a severe lack of sailboats or even an unappealing protagonist. People don't owe their attention or interest to devs. They need to earn it, and often times that just doesn't happen. To me, the fact people are surprised or even offended by that is stranger than the response itself.

Yeah, that's my feeling, too. I don't get why people seem to be rushing to conclusions about the game. We know nothing about the story, nothing about the other characters, nothing about the environments, barely anything about the enemies, nothing about the combat, and next to nothing even about this character people are upset about, apart from what is shown in this brief trailer (which I'd be the first to say was cliche and uninspired). The game is years away. I wish people would slow down and give it some time, wait until we hear more before drawing conclusions that it's a woke propaganda piece. I'm anti-woke, too, but I find some of the takes here and elsewhere embarrassing. The anti-woke Youtube crowd is piling on, too, of course. Apparently it's "a game about space lesbians." lol

It's not just that she's unattractive. She's so bland looking. You're got this trailer that absolutely oozes with style, and tries to evoke feelings that you're watching an 80s anime sci-fi. And then you've got the most bland looking woman front and center as your protagonist. She's visually uninteresting, and it clashes with the rest of the trailer. All because Neil Druckmann can't help but be a pretentious ass.

You know who would've absolutely nailed Jordan's character design? CDPR. If Jordan looked like either of these two, not only would they look like they belong in a setting like this, but the trailer would've gone over super well with people.
