Naughty Dog Announces Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

Now the damage is done. Even if she is the coolest female character ever like Ripley 2.0, it will not matter anymore

I went back and rewatched the trailer and I will say that I don't find the character to be that interesting, not as interesting as Nathan Drake anyhow. I also learned about Uncharted last minute and it became my favorite game and then series... but I will maintain that we need to wait to see more of the game before labeling it as "woke" or any other labels like that.

I wouldn't take a lot of what's being said seriously. You can tell when we're having a genuine thoughtful discussion and when we're just being playful idiots.
I know, looking at your response again it's clear that you were (and I shouldn't have quoted it), but I seriously can't see the same for the other two people, even moreso when I know a bit about them here in GAF. They're open to prove me wrong.

Yep. I've always said that the '80s is the greatest decade, and the fact that even people who weren't around to be part of it are obsessed with it is a testament to how unique and special it was. But when people do things like this it rarely feels natural, it's like a dimly-remembered, flanderized fever dream version of the '80s.

Mra3OK.jpg

I'm still gonna check the game out though.

Yeah the 80s can get wrapped up into a few things, when the reality is...... It's many ways to envoke the 80s.

Its why I loved this trailer so much. Instead of having a cassette tape, she has a CD changer.

Same as her bubble\puffer jacket. That was more a 90s jacket, but I like the mixing done here.

Can't wait until somebody breaks the code for this "in-game" alphabet. I'd like to know what this says on the robot's arm.

A bunch of normie Xbox fans and the real Mattyp Mattyp give their thoughts on Intergalactic....

And the consensus? They loved it and didn't know there was a controversy. They are glad to see Naughty Dog tackle a new IP in the science fiction genre and thought that the MC gave them Jack from ME2 vibes.

Maybe you should look at the like/dislike ratio of Intergalactic vs other games at the show. It got demolished compared to other games. At the top was Onimusha with a ratio of about 99:1 positive.

And Sony disabled comments being chickens who cant take negative comments because it'll look bad on the game if people see the comments.

Who cares if you found a video with people who liked it. Here's a YT filter of people who didnt.

Do we know if it was Sony or ND themselves? :pie_thinking:

Comments are still enabled on the official PlayStation channel. I believe it's only the ND channel that had comments disabled, right?

I'm thinking ND probably has in-house staff running their channel.

Youre right. I just checked. Active on official PS site. Disabled on ND's YT channel. Someone at ND got cold feet.

For those of you who want a laugh, check out the comments of the game on Sony's channel. lol. Scroll down the comments. There isn't one positive one for pages with the big one at the top being about Will Smith.

Initial reaction was overall poor. I think we can all agree on that. Here's the reaction to Cyberpunk 2077 reveal six years ago.

As we know, the launch was a disaster and the game needed a couple more years of updates to come close to the vision for that game. Point is initial reception, shitty or great, doesn't really mean much. What we don't know is a hell of a lot more than what we do know.

theres more pages on this shit than fucking GTA6 and 50% of the posts here are about a supposed woke agenda over a bald space lady.
again this is why im left and dont participate much in this culture war grifter shit. you dont lose your mind over petty first world problems like this stuff. you just evaluate if the game is good or not & choose to play depending on if it fits your tastes or not.

returnal's MC wasnt conventionally attractive but the game's still nutty. im sure to ND fans this will be the same too.
if you want pretty women, why not read a visual novel? Kimi ga nozomu eien has a lot of them- and a heartbreaking story to boot

again- y'all have lost the damn plot

Everytime I think I've seen the lowest gaming communities will stop too in thus stupid culture war thing they prove me wrong

Trailer is literally just a black girl. There's no pronouns in it, she doesn't beat up a man, nothing. Just a black girl with no makeup and a shaved head(something that if you dont love in the sticks you've seen a million times) and you get this chaos.

Really don't get it, but with every new announcement I feel more and more disconnected from whatever the gaming community has become over the last decade. It was never perfect but I dont remember the hostility, the constant, *constant* outrage, the digging through celebs who are in the games IG and scrutinizing their politics from a 5 year old interview, etc.

I truly don't even recognize the community im engaging with often anymore. It feels different, abrasive, contemptable, miserable, when we very much still have enjoyable games that come out.

I just don't get it

People who watch YouTube videos and engage in social media are clearly part of the video game market - why else would they be watching video game trailers and interacting with it's social features? You can haggle representative percentages, sure, but don't discount them fully and rely on some great silent majority - that just buys you more Concords.

Exactly.

Like ratios are only relevant to some people when it fits their narrative.

If Onimusha got 99% Likes (which it did last time someone posted a pic), are people saying thats BS and really it's 50/50 in real life? Nope. Hey, people liked the Onimusha announcement and trailer so they gave a thumbs up.

Was it this bad when the TLOU2 leaks happened or was it worse?

About this bad. Maybe even worse. Lots of people that just wanted to start a hate campaign due to various narrative decisions they didn't agree with. It went way too far though to the point of outright lies and misinformation. In the end, calmer heads still ended up rating the game exceptionally high even if they personally didn't like the narrative choices there's no denying it was an outstanding game.

Same will happen here if ND delivers what we all expect them to.

Im rooting for the games success, but I want the game to deserve that success. What I'm saying is I'm hoping the game is good.

I wasn't here at that time but the TLOU2 leaks controversy was nigh inescapable

Maybe Intergalactic will be an awesome game with no politics. We'll all have to wait and see in 2-3 years when it releases.

But the pushback so far is on ND, not gamers.

Dont make a game like LOU2 with tons of LBGT and political preaching and that game (and this one) would get the same initial negative reactions.

What were the initial reactions and like ratios for LOU1 on PS3? I dont know since I dont have that YT plug in to see dislikes. But I bet it was a big success because the trailers probably just focused on Joel exploring and kicking the shit out of bandits and zombies. And I remember a clip somewhere where they showed Ellie jumping on someone's back to help Joel and people were amped up and happy that happened as it shows the game is a tag team trying to get through an apocalyptic world together. Its a no nonsense trailer during the zombie craze of gaming.

Fast forward to now, and why would that Intergalactic trailer deserve the same kind of positive vibes? You got a shaved head ugly girl who practically looks like a guy, no gameplay aside from the end when it might be real gameplay slashing a robot, and people are tired of the 80s retro sci-fi trend. Even the GOTG game didnt even sell great and thats the biggest modern day retro-ish sci-fi franchise now.

If that stuff offends you so much, don’t buy it.

I couldn’t give a toss as long as the characterization is good. I never found TLOU to be preachy at all, it just so happened to star characters that were LGTBQ

Fucking amazing so normal average gamer like me who spend money to buy a game need to make a long form video in order to be representative?

People like me need to quit our daily office job and be some internet youtuber only can we are considered representative?

Holy shit your insuferable as usual

I get it, but goddamn what a thing to witness.

The pattern of woke stuff in media and audiences rejecting it is a real thing. Lots of people have had it up to their ass with the stuff. So they've developed a sensitivity to it. But at some point it's oversensitivity.

Naughty dog's main characters:
A furry animal mascot with an attitude
A dashing scoundrel making quips
A gruff dad ...who is sad
A post apocalyptic orphan survivor kid
A tough girl who doesn't dress up to stay in

You could safely say those were all of their time.

There is nothing going on in the cutscene but an androgenous black girl with a shaved head and no makeup. Yes, there was a time long ago when that would be totally unacceptable. I understand there is additional context around it, which includes the general audience preferring something more ... classical. But really you got to stop for a second and assess what's before your eyes and try not to project anything onto it, then add that back in to your whole picture.

The dislike ratio is real but people can still read into it what they want. Is it about what was actually shown on the screen or is it more about a much wider backlash? That's why I both get it and think it's hysteria. Those are the two sides of it. Even saying two sides is selling short the complexity of it all.

So are we all to assume like ratios are indicative of future sales numbers? Does a 99% like rating mean the game will sell over 10 million?

Does a 40% like ratio mean the game doesn't have the ability to sell 5 million copies lifetime?

What does a like ratio have to do with sales? All it means is whomever watched it gave their opinion if they like it or not.

Among the most viewed music videos is probably that Rick Astley video. Does that mean everyone in the world is going to buy the song? Of course not.

I ask because many in this thread have already projected the financial lack of success the game will have based on the like ratio on YouTube videos. So I was curious if you shared that same opinion.

People are probably projecting success in a relative sense. And assuming a lousy ratio'ed game will lose sales. A ND game will sell millions. It can be rated a 0% Like ratio and it'll sell more than random indie game selling for $15. But how does it sell or compare to other games? Impossible to even project since it's a brand new IP.

We also dont know the estimated budget either.

But one thing (I think) holds true is that sci-fi space kinds of games as a setting dont sell as well as zombies or medieval settings. So just based on that, I doubt this game will sell like GOW or Spiderman or LOU.

I love the 80s/90's art direction and aesthetic regarding the ships UI and the materials in the ship, from the tube tv, to the retro Sony CD Changer to the Adidas hi tops even the ending cut out with the CTR distortion was such a nice touch.

@midnightAI Respect. but I don't even know if people like that even get all those references and what those design choices are, some on here didn't even fucking know the design happening within a lot of what we saw from that trailer has nothing to fucking do with shit happening now, those are literally designs from decades ago.

but if they don't know (like...don't actually understand anything about design or art), they'll not see the references or nods to those classics.

Not everyone gets all that and this thread shows a fuck ton of people who seem to be either new to Sci-fi from that time frame or simply don't actually know much about design or something (or both)
This so much.

I've rarely seen a dislike ratio on YouTube that acutely represented any demographic.

Someone who was never going to buy the game in a million years, someone who doesn't play any video games, and someone who has an encyclopedic knowledge of ND and has 100% every title 3 times, all get a vote. You can also vote multiple times if you're willing to spend the time doing that.

Theres no statement or rational behind an update, which makes it easy to co opt for whatever your personal grievance with the media is if it leans negative.

But even on the discussion level. We've run the "woke" term through every possible ringer and it not only means nothing concrete now but it actively poisons the well of any conversation it comes up in, if there's anyone present who disagrees because to even disagree you almost HAVE to assume what the other person is talking about on some level.

The entire discussion has metastasized and, instead of supposedly having no filter, saying what you want to say; we just have a lot of people using words but not saying much to describe other people using other words and not saying much. Assumption after assumption, intention after intention.

And all this... for something we have not much to even engage with. At least with the TLOU2 thing it was a shocking narrative twist that would've made headlines regardless.

All I know is I actually want the game to succeed, u certainly don't think its going to social engineer people or is trying to rewrite the fabric of societal interaction like some say. It just looks cool, it has the aesthetic that is very easy for me to get into.

People were spoiling the game to those who didn’t want to know about the plot. It was truly disappointing, the Debbie downers and party poopers wanted to spoil the fun for the rest of us. There is people here that doesn’t like video games, they are just here to engage in discussions behaving like assholes, cause if they behave like this in Front of people they would be labeled as crazy and mentally ill.

By the way - just one tidbit I found interesting.
  • Sony / ND worked with Tati Gabrielle on Uncharted 4.
  • Sony / ND / HBO then hires her to play Nora's character in The Last of Us (HBO) Season 02.
  • Now ND hires her to play the main lead in Intergalactic.
It is clear that they really like her as an actor and want to continue their working relationship, in the same veins they have with Nolan North, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, and Kaitlyn Dever.

Overall I like the concept of "far future with retro (specifically 80s/90s) aesthetics/hardware" but it's starting to feel a little played out. Nothing inherently bad about it, but GotG was so many years ago I would hope we could have a more unique direction for the future of sci-fi.

Can't say I'm super interested in playing as the protagonist but of course there is plenty of opportunity for the story/gameplay to be excellent. I'm kind of surprised how bad this trailer was but at this moment I fully expect the game to get great sales and even better reviews.
