yeah, makes sense, lets portrait one of Japan's greatest traditions using the lowest denominator possible, Ubisoft already offended Japan culture in every way they could, nothing more ll impress me, so, like we say in Brazil " what is a fart for those who have already shat themselves?"

You’re an expert too?

Keep in mind that Ubi brought this upon themselves by insisting that Shadows was historically accurate.

A lot of the complaints may seem kinda childish and pedantic, but all of this is because Ubisoft double-downed on the historical accuracy of their game.

Actions have consequences.

And people who are pedantic about historical accuracy can also see for themselves that it isn’t historically inaccurate for there to be a female sumo fighter in that time period.

As people have pointed out, they are stuck as amateur status only. But googling it briefly, female sumo has been around for ages. So it would had been around when this game takes place.

But UBI seems to choose people that arent mainstream or expected. Similar to Yasuke chosen as a black guy character in a Japanese samurai game, female sumo wrestlers do exist and seems to be chosen too. The more mainstream choice would be a Japanese samurai and a big fat male sumo wrestler.

well, they used the one-legged torii gate as promo material for the game, than they changed the release date to the same date of the worst modern terrorist attack in Japan, they also focused in saying that Yasuke was a legendary samurai based on a white dude book, after that they made an apology letter to the Japanese for the "mistake", they also showed the collector edition with a lot of
grotesque mistakes and now they are using a woman to depict one of the most traditional martial art of Japan that is mostly fought by men since ever.

See, you don't need to be an expert to see that a lot of mistakes were made and they may have offended some Japanese people, NOW to pretend that all this didn't happen is to be intellectually dishonest for the sake of a company that apparently doesn't give a shit about Japanese culture.

The special skill described is a sumo basic move or something, not that nobody else can push folks, lol.
Yeah I’ve not defended the creative decisions for this game, but not going to support a meltdown over potential misinformation. Tag me when someone sees Sumo in the game. Kthxbye

Someone dropped this in that Twitter thread as a rebuttal, but OP happily dodged it

Rebuttal is questionable, Yasuke died well before "middle of Edo" (probably even before the Edo period started). So it wasn't common, in fact the only precedent presented in the article was from almost a millennia before he was even born.

In other words:
"Ubisoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase AC Shadows for either system, nor will they purchase any of Ubisoft's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Ubisoft has alienated an entire market with this move.

Ubisoft, publicly apologize and cancel AC Shadows for PS5 or you can kiss your business goodbye."

Caring about this shit is next level neckbeard activity. Whatever happened to just ignoring games that you're not interested in?

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
i thought this game supposed to be historical accurate?

dont think female sumo wrestlers were allowed in ancient japan?

I hope this game flops like a hundred-thirty-pound sack of potatoes. Ubisoft's open-world design of their games is extremely tiresome and very repetitive. Considering the financial problems they've been facing since 2024, this will likely be the spark that lit the fire on Ubisoft's house.

Just from the YouTube videos alone, I'm already rolling my eyes at the yet again copy and paste gameplay from AC: Odyssey modified to a Japanese setting. Seriously, I can see that annoying sailing boat animation from AC: Origins from a mile away.

What a disgustingly creative bankrupt of a video game company. How they remained in business (until possibly this year) for all these years makes no sense. Even the average gamer who doesn't pay attention to these kinds of things is starting to take note of the repetitiveness and actively boycott their games.

It’s not even like historical accuracy or not at this point. When they added her they didn’t research or go actually would this fit or not?
No they just randomly added it cause it’s Asian-ish enough.

AC: Shadows is the game version of Emilia Perez

People are going crazy over accuracy on both sides over a fictional piece of work.
In a series that's almost 20 years deep built on fucking around with history. No idea why people care now, honestly. Yasuke was an anamoly, I don't see why they wouldn't use that as a hook.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Just gone for less than half day and returned to find out my man Adam had ingloriously stabbed my back, ruthlessly.

I mean man, how can I now even convince myself to fight on your side for the unavoidable armageddon when Avowed drops?

Very very brokenhearted now.

People act like for years Ubisoft hasn’t been marketing this games as partially educational/historically accurate. I can distinctly remember it being at least a big part of the marketing for the one set in Egypt.

It’s a bit disingenuous to now try to make the argument that “lol it’s fictional”. Even in fiction this race/gender swapping has gotten so bad it starts straining the suspension of disbelief.

Case in point House of the Dragon suddenly taking an entire race of people obsessed with their magical lineage to the point they practice incest and make the second most important house (that intermarried with the pale ass white Targaryen’s) black.

It has gotten so bad it isn’t even DEI for the sake of inclusion anymore. These are people vindictively just vandalizing things they perceive as being “white” or “male” because they are sociopathic morons they belong in an asylum somewhere, not in leadership roles at movie studios/game companies.

They didn’t do these things to AC for inclusion sake. They did it because they damn well know that it would “own the chuds”.

Exactly.

When it comes to media and fiction, some people seem to not give a shit about anything. AC Shadows set in feudal Japan can have A family watching tv and they’ll be like…. Well it’s not meant to be real life so who cares. It’s just a game.

Most people will call stuff out if it’s stupid not fitting the context of the setting. Or if it has political lectures in it.

There was a vid Asmongold did watching a Japanese guy criticizing the game. Some things made sense like him laughing at the bad AI or yasuke kicking a guy 40 ft away. But for minute nitpicks like he criticized that some trees and plants dont bloom together in the same season so you’d never see all these colours to me is a nitpick. Is he right? I’ll assume yes. But something like that I don’t think the avg person cares. That would be like playing a western game and a forest has two plants beside each other even though in real life they never are as they come from different continents.

There is a lot of truth do this. But we also need to look at it a little deeper to understand why this is happening. The best analogy I can think of is quarrels with a loved one. The moment you have pissed them off or vice versa, every single “mistake” or flaw gets exaggerated way beyond proportion and it quickly spirals out of control. You take a step back and examine the issues individually, it’s all petty and meaningless shit. What needs to be addressed is not that. But what is causing the quarrel in the first place. AC pissed the fans off on day one with Yasuke’s reveal and dubious claims of historical accuracy, accusations of racism and blatantly insensitive marketing material like that one legged Torii gate. Now all the petty meaningless shit is being pointed out, like the trees or a fat girl, because that’s what happens when people get angry. It’s going to be hard to get out of this death spiral, because Ubisoft isn’t a loved one and you can’t have an open heart to heart with a corporation. All they can hope for is there is a solid game under this mess that makes all this will blow over. And may be a sincere apology to the Japanese community for the initial missteps.

But it’s a Sisyphean task at this point.

I love japan. Been there 5 times . Planning to go this or next year again.
I respect the japanese culture and etiquette.

Why is ubisoft doing this? I would think if you make a game about a country and its culture you would show some respect and dont push your views that noone cares for.

I bet they wouldnt dare to do this in a middle eastern setting.
