There is a lot of truth do this. But we also need to look at it a little deeper to understand why this is happening. The best analogy I can think of is quarrels with a loved one. The moment you have pissed them off or vice versa, every single “mistake” or flaw gets exaggerated way beyond proportion and it quickly spirals out of control. You take a step back and examine the issues individually, it’s all petty and meaningless shit. What needs to be addressed is not that. But what is causing the quarrel in the first place. AC pissed the fans off on day one with Yasuke’s reveal and dubious claims of historical accuracy, accusations of racism and blatantly insensitive marketing material like that one legged Torii gate. Now all the petty meaningless shit is being pointed out, like the trees or a fat girl, because that’s what happens when people get angry. It’s going to be hard to get out of this death spiral, because Ubisoft isn’t a loved one and you can’t have an open heart or heart with a corporation. All they can hope for is there is a solid game under this mess that makes all this all blow over. And may be a sincere apology to the Japanese community for the initial missteps.

But it’s a Sisyphean task at this point.
Great point. Got to say among the best examples I’ve read on gaf bringing up dogpiling.

Game companies dont seem to understand that you can actually have some DEI stuff in a game that seems out of place or exaggerated. Just don’t make it a focus going against a norm and you’ll be fine.

It’s like they don’t understand the concept of first impressions. Doesn’t matter if it’s a game, going out on a date or checking out a car at a dealership.

Everyone seems to love cod every year. Someone posted to me a while back they even gave away free Pride rainbow gun skins or armour. I forget but it was right there in plain view and free.

Does the avg cod gamer give a shit? Nope. Even the most right wing kkk guy probably doesn’t since it’s not forced on a gamer to use, no preachings, no SP campaign quest of captain price saving the lesbian ceo of a company or any other stuff. Gamers too busy shooting each other and calling in killstreaks. And you also don’t seem to have combative activision employees mouthing off to gamers too,

Very well said. Folks in the thread bashing me saying can't you ignore the game you are not interested at all? Didn't bother to explain, but truth is I do care quite a bit about Assassin's Creed.

And you know as an Asian, how much I anticipate a fully fledged AC game set in ancient Japan. Then Ubi fucked up big. I've played and liked many black characters and I am happy to play one in a proper AC settings without doubt. But it's just lousy that Ubi couldn't help but to castrate the setting and narrative of Shadows to fit the "correct politics" in the game. What a waste of resources.

AC Shadows is going to feature a female sumo wrestler.

Ok, for those who don't know: it is strictly forbidden for women to become professional sumo wrestlers to this day in Japan. Hell, it is even forbidden for women to get into many (if not all of them) sacred places in Japan, including a sumo ring.

The fact is that this is a tradition taken so seriously to this date that a few years ago, more precisely in 2018, some female paramedics had to step on the ring to help a guy that collapsed and they were readily told to leave the ring immediately, even thou they were there to help.

And after the women left, the tournament staff threw salt in the ring again to purify it, because women are seen as impure in Japanese religious culture.

This is how much they respect this tradition.

Now I won't discuss if this is right or wrong here, it is what it is and It's none of my business since I am not born in Japan.

Ok, back to AC Shadows: they putting a female sumo wrestler to represent the biggest and most important martial art in Japan's history in this game, even thou only men can become professional sumo wrestlers, is clearly another indication (like we still needed huh) that they never had the intention to properly represent the Japanese culture.

They only want to disrespect Japan, Japanese people and their culture.

They don't care about anything but to shove their own personal beliefs of what is right and what is wrong into this game, period.

I love sumo, I really do. And seeing they doing this with such a beautiful aspect of the Japanese culture makes me even less interested in this game.

You love sumo yet are offended there is a female sumo wrestler, even though these have existed in Japan for hundreds of years (just not professionally)? No offense but what a pathetic hill to die on.

I despise Ubisoft but I would love for this game to be a success just to counter all the whiny grifter bullshit going around about it. “Drama” is right 😆🤭

I find people that act like a videogame should be historically accurate cringe. It's a videogame not real life and it's about having fun first and foremost. Nothing you do in any assassin's creed game is historically accurate or realistic, so why are we acting like this game should be.
I agree with you. My only problem is Ubisoft tried to pass the game off as Historically accurate in there original messaging. They could just not said that.

But in other examples, like ppl getting mad bcuz God of War had black girl in Norse MYTHology. Cringe, dilutes the anti woke message.

Maybe Ubisoft should make a game that showed how horrible and inhumane the Japanese were during the Empire days if they wanted to piss off the Japanese and all those western woke twats, online who care so much about Japanese culture

Looks like the entire Ubisoft-defense brigade can't help themselves. Ever wonder how they did not take these kinds of creative liberties with AC: Mirage. You're just showing your true selves here.

Anyway ofcourse grifters Asmongold and Kabrutus are ready to make another 'important' Point on behalf of gamers!

Fuck both asmongold and kabrutus
I have no idea about history of Sumo or whatnot, but pretty sure that having two courtesans “dress” in loincloth and wrestle is not quite the same.

It’s more like they had too much soju and called up strippers. 😉

Its the equivalent of this:

Yep, let’s not get crazy about some drunk Daimyo deciding he wants to see basically prostitutes (not quite the same connotation to be fair) to get naked and pretend to be sumo wrestlers.

I don’t particularly care about all the nitpicks but i find the whole thing pretty hilarious. Ubi could have avoided the whole fiasco by having an intern do some Google searches for a few hours, lol.

The accusations have hurt my man LectureMaster LectureMaster so much that he had to break character to reveal a softer side :(

But it doesn't matter until you can beat ya boy's time in Odyssey, the best of the WRPG AC games.

I would love to see some of the later date female sumo depicted in photographs of the time. Were they fat as hell like the male equivalent or was it just a sideshow for the men to see scantily clad women wrestling around just like what the emperor wanted.

I actually liked Odyssey, but I played it on PC so I could fudge experience without grinding and reduce the stupid mercs coming after you.

I paid Ubisoft the $5 blood money for the permanent XP booster when playing it on Xbox, have already played it on PS4 when it launched originally.

For the hundred(s) of hours I put into it, $5 over the sale price I bought it was .. ok I guess ..

It should have never been needed in the first place.

And now with Shadows Ubi is supposedly doing memory monitoring to prevent trainers for exactly this reason. Fuck them.

Yes I get it just I don't get why since years AC are historical fictions and take a lot of liberties and it's fine. And suddenly for Japan a lot of people are screaming about disrespecting culture, rewriting history etc...
Ubisoft was the first saying about historical accuracy as an excuse to put a foreign person as the new main AC character instead of a native like previous entries. And journalists. And other 'experts'. "It wasn't an agenda, it was real, we had even consultants and whatever and you can't complain about it". So...

Somewhere down the line Ubi need to do a lot of thinking why all the negative reactions for their recent games, this especially but also Outlaws, it's really a shame, i like Ubi games very much, but it's like they sometimes don't understand what their fans want.. AC Japan was so much requested along the years, just to become a laughing stock, what a damn shame.

Its interesting these decisions come from the kind of people who believe in things like cultural appropriation, cultural imperialism and eurocentrism. I feel like they wouldnt dare do this in other settings. I suppose they pick and choose which foreign cultures are up for grabs and Japan is westernized or privileged enough somehow that they're happy doing it?

Op? Why would you post something that is inaccurate. Do people not do their research before posting?

Women’s sumo is actually a thing in Japan. 🤦‍♂️

Edit: I will say though, that the part about women not being allowed to enter the ring is accurate. This quote was taken from Wikipedia.
So same as Women and American football in other words xd.

At this point you gotta feel like they're doing it on purpose. This game can't fail soon enough so Ubi can enter the Tencent era and maybe start to make good games again.

I know there's already Assassin's Creed for America. But pretend there isn't. And finally Ubisoft decides to go there for an easy grand slam.
Releasing on 9/11, Set in the Wild West, the main character is a Pakistani or Indian man (no, not the native american one, India Indian) and a female cowboy. Guns clip in and out graphically all the time. The battle music in the wild west is a bollywood chorus. For some reason there's a demolished twin set of buildings in a random town shaped like the world trade centers post crash. Architecture and design of the buildings make no sense. Its like that where it goes beyond 'historical accuracy'. Just no attention to detail at all.

Looks like someone just edited the article and added some context.

Women's sumo would not become common until the 18th century in the middle of Edo (1603–1868), when a form of onna sumo was performed in some areas of Japan. Women's sumo was mainly a spectacle associated with brothels.[2]

Most of the art looks great. Really impressive actually. The bits with Yasuke not so much, because an African man in 16th century Japanese clothes looks forced and unauthentic. Yasuke isn't in the game because of his historical reality, but because of modern day identity politics. (And the same goes for that fat female Sumo wrestler)
