Oculus Rift Launch Thread: Ballpark 2016

Not open for further replies.
This newsletter Oculus just sent out gives me the impression we won't be getting Touch until after Oculus Connect 3 later this year. That even takes place in October.

Also, Rifts are shipping in 2-4 business days now.

Select Microsoft Stores will start stocking the Rift as well.

"In volume". Does that mean they might release in limited quantities starting earlier than that? Giving early Rift owners theirs first would be nice.

I wonder if they'll start bundling the controllers with the headsets moving forward once Touch launches, or whether they also keep a basic headset bundle so they still have something with a lower price point than the Vive.

I would assume they'll do both. No reason not to. Gives them the best of both worlds.

thanks for the impressions, looking forward to trying this tonight

my setup is very similar to yours, i have a 4690k @ 4 GHZ but otherwise identical, so I imagine my settings will be the same

i just use the medium preset and it doesnt seem to drop frames. the "ground view" is the best IMO

this + g27 wheel and pedals = crazy immersion

So Chronos is fucking awesome man. Beat the first boss. It really is a Zelda + Dark Souls kind of game. Heavy on exploring and gathering items.

I heard the gt 970 isn't a good card for the oculus is that true?

Its basically the minimum. A couple of games will give you trouble.....even more if you try to push settings.

If I was building for VR, might as well go with a 980ti/1070/1080. No reason to spend so much to struggle.

Hot damn. Gonna grab it later this week.

Everything is running beautifully on my new gtx 1080 based rig. What a treat.

July looks like a good month with DRally and Obduction hitting.

Also I did mention to buy Darknet, right? Shit's crazy good, though maybe not for the faint of heart in terms of puzzle complexity.

It's really blown me away. I started it on Hard and have been pleasantly surprised at how tough it is. Combine the polish, the Souls-lite combat, the sparse checkpoints, the harsh resources, the puzzles-for-pacing a la classic Resident Evil, all in super atmospheric VR... It's extremely up my alley.

wow felt weird to be able to buy an oculus rift from best buy and get it shipped to arrive by friday

can anyone comment on how good solus project works on rift? also if its crazy hard (since its called survival game)

and does dirt rally VR mode support the external car views or only the interior cockpit view?

Also anyone comment on how good anshar wars 2, airmech and final approach pilot are?

Finally, if a game is available and the same price on both steam and oculus store, is there a recommended store to get it? eg is one better known for supporting updates/patches

Huh, now that the Rift ships pretty much immediately from Oculus, I wonder when that shows in eBay prices. They still have a ridiculous markup.

Should be a problem real soon for them. I was surprised that best buy sold out online today, glad I ordered whilst they were available since I imagine returning would be easier if there is some kind of problem with the hardware

i don't have answers to all of this, sorry

but:
1) dirt rally has camera angles external to the car as well. you have to hit pause and enable "all camera modes in vr", then you hit a button to cycle through them

2) it depends. as far as launchers go, Oculus home > SteamVR. But the games are usually cheaper on Steam. In the end, they are the same games, the only difference is how you launch them

Ugh It's been 4 days now, with no response from Oculus Support about my red tint and dead pixels. What everyone else's experience with them? They told me they'd send the spud tool to deal with the red tint and then I sent them my proof of all of the dead pixels in one of the screens and it's been radio silence since.

Any tips for the second boss in Chronos? I got him to the last phase I think, but when his swords are all lit up he wrecks.

There are a lot but a few of the PS VR exclusives that stood out to me were:

-Resident Evil 7
-Farpoint
-Final Fantasy XV
-Robinson the Journey
-Tethered
-Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
-PS VR Worlds
-Here They Lie
-Batman VR (more of a mini game but sounds neat)
-Playroom VR
-Ark Survival Evolved
-Battlezone
-The Assembly
-Shadow of the Beast
-Tekken 7
-Game Turismo Sport
-Dreams
-Rigs

These are just some of the ones that interest me. Check them out on YouTube. The list o actual games is MUCH larger.

Some of these games are announced for PC in regular form but not with VR support as of yet. As far as I am aware none of the above games is getting Rift support. If anyone heard differently please let me know.

But yeah I feel like there are quite a few PS VR games that looks amazing.

I can confirm that The Assembly will be coming to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive as well as PlayStation VR. In fact, we're releasing the game on PC next week (on Tues 19th July).

How hard are the puzzles in the game? Personally I dont normally like to play puzzle games, but this game looks awesome so are puzzles difficult - and if so is there a hint system if you get stuck for a long time?

Price for an Oculus Rift sensor looks like it might come in at around $99 USD:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4szt8x/rift_sensor_rma_price/

After the latest firmware update we can have four of these hooked up to a PC, presumably for full room scale.

An extra one will come with the Oculus Touch controllers, which I am guessing will be around $199 USD.

I was hoping they would match the effective $100 for sensor and touch controllers of the PSVR (ie $400 headset only, $500 with camera and 2 move controllers)

I dont know how they differ in tech costs though (eg individual sensors, and does move have haptic feedback?)

Wow, I already liked Defense Grid (finished DG 1 and 2 on regular non VR) so didnt know if I would regret buying $30 VR edition but wow its amazingly impressive. I didnt realize until I played it that the tower view doesnt just look cool but you can look around and interact with the entire board from that board too (I thought you would have to jump back out to high level view, then zoom in again to a new place). VR works amazingly well with strategy games it looks like, would love to play civ and xcom type games like this.

Chronos too is absolutely stunning. Looks amazing, great gameplay, zero nausea due to the camera system - by far the best action type game IMO. Edge of Nowhere gives me slight nausea because of the character movements, only fixed camera games like Chronos (auto) and Farlands (teleport) work completely nausea free. Having played Chronos, I think its a massive mistake for FFVII to be VR in first person, the older style fixed camera view would work amazingly well.

Farlands is stunning too. The gameplay mechanics are boring since its a simple casual game designed as a showcase (comes free with the Rift like Lucky's Tale) but wow it looks absolutely amazing visually, I would so love to play a RPG in VR with similar movement and graphics quality. It reminded me of Star Ocean on the 360 the ocean seetting. Due to a fixed camera, it could be a great way to get the older turn based style battle systems like loads of older JRPG's to reduce nausea versus an action game.

I need to try Dragon Age Inquisition with Vorpx. I think the graphics would look great, since the sense of scale is just so much better its incredible (eg in Chronos).

Project Cars looks incredible in VR, especially the exterior view. Need to get euro truck sim 2 since that supports rift too.

Solus looks great but they need teleport on rift - just make it an option to teleport where the crosshair is please. nausea city with the move by controller.

House of the Undying sun also works incredibly well in 3D - great game and great VR showcase too.

While we do have puzzles in certain areas of the game (for example during some of the trials faced by Madeleine during her induction by the Assembly), the game’s main focus is on its story and characters rather its puzzles, which are all very contextual. You won't need to play The Assembly with a walkthrough by your side and none of our puzzles are designed to impede progress.

If you get stuck, you can always reach us via Twitter, our subreddit or the game's Steam forum and we'll provide help as quickly as we can.

Just curious what The Assembly is going to cost? I am not seeing a price listed anywhere.

I historically am not a big fan of FPS story games), but I do think the immersion of VR could change my stance. Also the subject matter of this game in particular is really appealing as well.

So I have to say the price will be everything for myself.

Regardless, best of luck on the launch tomorrow.

A bit too expensive, imo, given what really is, but I suppose they know that right now the buyers will be VR enthusiasts that won't blink at the price or well paid techies so why not.

Does anyone else have an issue where the inside of the lens kinda rubs up against the bridge of your nose and makes it uncomfortable? Maybe I just have a big nose, but I think it's more something to do with the shape of my head. I have to wear the Rift pretty low to get the sweet focus spot, and that causes the lens to touch my nose. I've tried all kinds of adjustments but nothing seems to work quite right. It's not terrible, just uncomfortable after 30 minutes to an hour of using at a time.

Fucking hell man fuck this sliding block puzzle in Chronos. I hate these. Been at it for at least an hour.

Sliding puzzles are the bane of gaming, the one trick that game designers pull out whenever they officially run out of ideas for good content.

It really put me off Chronos haha. Loving it until then. Don't want to go back into it atm.

I hate sliding block puzzles.

Find it surprising that the movement in edge of nowhere makes you nauseous because of movement but project cars doesn't - especially in external camera views..

My experience was similar. I had some issues right away, but they went away quickly. I did notice that one part of it never went away though, and that was looking far to the sides (or up/down) while the camera is moving. That always made me feel slightly queasy.

Abe VR is a very interesting experience, especially looking down and finding you're a woman (which as a guy is...cool and weird at the same time)

You wonder if there's VR porn out there that allows you to "be the woman"?

Yes. Yes there is.

VR is a strange, awesome and scary place.

I guess i'm one of the lucky few that has a brain that's hardwired to do them easily. I always like when I get to them in games, haha.

See, part of the problem with sliding puzzles is that they are easy. The only thing they offer is to be a time waster, and they are way too efficient at wasting the player's time.

I hope you aren't getting hung up on it for that long each time :/ This honestly destroyed the pacing of that part of the game and was one of my only major complaints.

Just beat Chronos.
What's the locket for? Did I use it and forget? Is it for the one dreamer that you can use items on?
