Enjoyed the trailer. Big and bombastic without really giving anything away - enough to get me hyped. Five more weeks 'til Easter! Plus, gives us a good peek at Matt Smith, and he looks quite awesome as the Doctor. Already a bit different from David Tennant, but still great at the whole look-of-wonder-and-amazement. Exciting stuff.

Six weeks.

Trailer would have been fun in 3D, so those judging need to keep the fact that it was made for 3d airing in theaters in mind.
Can not wait for it to start!

For Brits only - to do with license fees or some such; I'm sure you'll understand - here's the new trailer if you don't wanna hang around, watching telly all day: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/newyear/

Just gonna update the OP with it.

Edit: But the YouTube version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpbmMhNe6aA&feature=player_embedded) might work for those outside the ol' Isles.
Well, the first trailer had my hopes quite high, this one just makes me dread the new series!

To be fair, I think the first one's a better indication of what the new series will be like. I don't think The Doctor and Amy will be falling through time every episode. Well, without a Tardis anyway.

Trailer was horrible, but it seemed more of a calling attention to the new series type of thing than indicative of tone. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

I think it was just a trailer to tell people that Doctor Who is coming back soon. Won't really be indicative of what the new show will be like.

I did like the line he delivered though.

"All of time and space. Everywhere and anywhere, any star that ever was. Where do you want to start? :)"

Supposedly the trailer aired again yesterday and had 'April 3rd' at the end. Multiple people have seen it, so I don't think it's fake.

Pretty much guessed it, the logic being that it usually airs on a Saturday and April 3rd is the Saturday that lies between, uh, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Just watched the trailer and read the OP, I have to say the posts in here have done a good job of making me interested, I wasnt happy with Tennant and RTB leaving but thinking about it, it was getting stale.

So yeah looking forward to it, as long as the new writer doesnt become as cheap as RTB and just end each episode with some unforseen magical awnser. Dont get me wrong, RTB set up the drama excellently and had some really good idea's, but resolving the problems was where he fell flat on his face and the last 10 minuites where always a let down.

For a promo that shows practically nothing of the new season, it wasn't too bad and definitely looks tailored to 3d screenings. I like the visual style the time vortex, so i'm interested to see the new credits. I've already warmed up to Matt Smith's Doctor as well.

I definitely think the production design is going to impress me more during Moffats run, if the previous trailer was anything to go by. His episodes always had infinitely more interesting art direction and cinematography than RTD's over the top campfests.

Having not seen much of Who before, I really want to join in with the new series but feel obligated to start with Eccleston's run.

Anything in particular to get me excited? :lol

Its fun to watch. The second episode of that run got me hooked. Don't worry just get started and make it through the first one.
I find the willful absurdity charming as fuck.

You don't really need to know too much about the show before jumping in, so you shouldn't feel obligated to watch past seasons. David Tennant is awesome and there are some brilliant episodes, though, so i think you'd be missing out. I'm pretty sure you'd like it. :)

If you want to start watching from this season, i'd make sure to at least watch the season 3 ep Blink beforehand, since Moffat is doing a follow-up episode.

I'm sure gaf could assemble "13 essential episodes" if necessary for a more thorough introduction

What we got gaf?

I'll take a jab.

Season 1
Dalek
Father's Day
Empty Child
The Doctor Dances

The Christmas Invasion

Season 2
The Girl In the Fireplace
The Impossible Planet
The Satan Pit

Season 3
Human Nature
Family of Blood
Blink

Season 4
Silence in the Library
Forest of the Dead
Midnight

Waters of Mars

Those are what i consider the essentials.

I'll co-sign this. I would perhaps take Father's Day out though, and maybe add in Tooth and Claw. It's been years since I've seen Father's Day - might be better than I remember.

I came up with a similar list in the first page of this thread:

FnordChan said:
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (2005 eps 1.9-1.10)
The Girl in the Fireplace (2006 ep 2.4)
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (2006 eps 2.8-2.9)
Human Nature/The Family of Blood (2007 eps 3.8-3.9)
Blink (2007 ep 3.10)
The Unicorn and the Wasp (2008 ep 4.7)
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (2008 eps 4.9-4.10)

There, eleven episodes. If you really wanted to hit 13, I'd throw in Midnight from Season 4 and, say, Tooth and Claw. Dalek is a great episode, but I'm not sure how effective it would be for someone who wasn't already familiar with the Daleks, and if someone was watching the suggested episodes in broadcast order, it wouldn't be where I would suggest they start.

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. It's the first episodes penned by the person who's now the new showrunner, and I feel it's also the best story in Eccleston's series.

Do bear in mind that it was designed *specifically* for an audience who weren't already familiar with the Daleks, reintroducing them for the world; I'd argue that it's ideal for that role.

Edit: I'd agree with most people's lists, but I'd also suggest throwing in School Reunion; it may be silly in many respects but it goes a good way to establishing
how being with the Doctor can change a Companion, and how he always has to - is forced to - ultimately move on

Actually, on that note, it might be good to distinguish between "the best 13 episodes" and "the best 13 introductions to important concepts in the Doctor Who universe".

I'm not entirely sold on that idea myself, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. I agree with you that The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is the best introduction to current Who, so as long as a newbie watched Dalek after those episodes, good enough.

They should also watch End of Time just so the transition goes a bit smoother. Suffer through part one and enjoy part two.

Yeah this is actually what I meant. Many of the "best" episodes wont be that useful to anyone new with no context.
Still, I would bet that this season will reintroduce stuff though as its pretty much a fresh start.
