Okay, well that was one hell of a ride. I've decided to indulge in a bit of self-centeredness and post my 10 favorite episodes, with commentary from now and from when I first watched the episode. These are in chronological order, not in the order in which I liked them. My 5 favorites in order were Dalek, The Silence in the Library 2-parter, Blink, The Empty Child 2-parter and The Unicorn and the Wasp.

1. Dalek - Series 1/ Eccelston+Rose
Then

Now: I've said it before, and now having watched all of the modern Who episodes, I'll say it again. Eccleston is my favorite Doctor. All three of them were excellent, in their own way, but Eccleston is the one actor who brought a measure of danger to the role. The acting when Eccleston showed his anger at the captured Dalek was a great bit of acting. That little bit of emotive resonance (with the help of the fantastic setting of "The End of the World") are what truly made me a fan.

2. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances Eccleston + Rose + Jack
Then:
Now: Of course these two episodes were going to be on the list, as I imagine they are on most peoples. Fantastic. The only part that I don't like is the repetition of the "Are you my mummy." But, as I later found out, Moffat loves doing the repeating line thing. A small price to pay for quality. These two episodes were the first to really play with the camera angles as a storytelling device.

3. School Reunion - Tennant + Rose + Sarah Jane Smith
Then:
Now: Truthfully, outside of the K-9 bits, I don't recall much of this episode, but clearly I loved the hell out of it when I watched it. Weird how that can happen. Still, the end was emotional for me for some reason. It' very possible I watched this show as a very young child and simply don't remember. At least my repressed memories are of the Doctor...

4. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit Tennant + Rose
Then:
Now: Oh, god I should have just skipped the next episode after these. Pavement blowjobs....fuck you Moaning Myrtle. Fuck you forever.

5. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday Tennant + Rose + Rickey's dumb ass
Then:
Now: Poor Donna. First impressions are everything. Fantastic send off for Rose, but one that was ruined a bit when she was brought back.

6. Human Nature/Family of Blood Tennant + Martha
Then:
Now: I doubt this one is among anybody's favorites list, but I really enjoyed it. The WWI scenes stick out for me, personally. It was also interesting to peak inside the mind of the Doctor. Clearly, he wants a permanent companion.

7. Blink Tennant + Sparrow
Then:
Now: Well, clearly, I loved this episode. Thanks again for the avatar, Keyser. Personally, I think they should have kept the Weeping Angels as a one-time enemy. Having them reappear and talk in series 5 really ruined the scariness they showed in this episode. There is a reason everybody loves this episode.

8. The Unicorn and the Wasp Tennant + Donna
Then:
Now: The dialogue turned what could have been a very basic episode and elevated it to something really special. This was my favorite "silly" episode. Very, very fun.

9. The Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead Tennant + Donna
Then:
Now: Of all the episodes, these two are the ones that have stuck in my mind the most. The alien life forms were scary as shit, and the Doctor saying "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" actually made my hair prickle just a bit. Great, great two-parter.

10. The Eleventh Hour Smith + Amy
Then:
Now: Well, this one is sort of pointless, as I just watched this last week. But still, a great introduction to both Amy and Smith. The scenes with little Amelia waiting on him were heartbreaking. Very nice introduction to a very solid season.

Well, thanks for putting up with my questions, comments and dumb observations guys. Watching while talking to other fans really heightened the experience, IMO. Very sad to have to wait for a year plus for new episodes, but I now have 40 years of backlog to work through, so it'll be time well spent.
Requoting your entire post so it's on top of the new page, but I'm also wondering about this: you said Eccleston's your favorite Doctor, so... who's your favorite companion? Rose, or did Donna/Amy manage to get ahead of her? And your favorite season?

Good questions.

Rose is still my favorite companion thus far. Donna was too shrill, Martha too bland and Amy...well, Amy is easily the cutest, but I'm still trying to figure out what exactly she did. "The girl who waited" suits her. She basically just stood around and looked sexy for the whole time. Admirable, sure, but I want to see her take a more active role next season.

My favorite season is tricky. Both seasons 4 and 5 were solid the entire way through. Season 3 was easily my least favorite, thanks in no small part to the worst finale I've ever seen, of any show, ever.

I think, looking at it now, season 4 would have to be my favorite, even with Donna, followed very closely by season 1 and 5.

4>1=5>2>3 ... but the more I think about it, the more 4 and 1 switch in my head. But starting with The Unicorn and the Wasp all the way up to the finale, there wasn't a bad episode, and some of my favorite of all.

As for the Doctors, all of them were very close. Eccleston, Tennant and Smith were very good at different things. I think it goes 9, 11, 10 for me there.

Really loved Donna personally. Agree on the Amy-characterisation: while on the one hand, she's being written very well, on the other... she feels a bit empty. I don't know if that makes sense, but she feels a bit like a lot of previous companions mushed together. I love her, but besides her cuteness she doesn't seem to stand out much, yet.

I think the 'dislike' for Tennant (though I know you still like him, just the least of three very likeable people/characters) maybe comes from him having the most episodes. Though the 10th Doctor did change bits through the season, you did see over three times as much Tennant in a really short time as the other two. Basically, after those almost 50 episodes of Tennant, you'd seen all his 'tricks'. Especially in such short order.

Can't really judge on the season-rankings, since only the 5th season is in my recent memory, and I just had that awesome Prom with all the music and montages from that season, so I can't help not putting that one on top. Season 3 was a weird one, though. Stuff like Human Nature and Blink is on the top of almost all the fan lists, and I quite liked 42, Utopia and Gridlock as well, but that Daleks in Manhatten two-parter and the Master-finale... ugh.

Edit: The show looking so much better in season 5 also really helps, though. 1-4 looked fine on first viewings, but after 5... camera-work, lighting, all that stuff doesn't feel nearly as good. Going to HD obviously helped, but the new producers and directors have done an amazing job this year.

Eleventh Hour is on iPlayer so my rewatch of S5 starts here - although it's still fresh I think it's my favourite series.

It's good to see the episode on your favourites, as despite not having one of the best monsters, it's possibly one of the finest produced ones of the series. The direction in it is beautiful (especially how they did the Amy / Doctor moment at the car), it's exciting, it's hilarious (Matt's delivery of "Bliimey, get a girlfriend Jeff" is perfect) and it brought in the great new theme.

And when chatting about the DVDs of this series with the missus (who I mock for buying them separately instead of waiting for the boxset, fewer extras!) and saw the lineup for the final volume - just realised how good the series has been. On one disc, you get Vincent and the Doctor (brilliant), The Lodger (funny as hell, despite what you might think about Cordon) and the 2 part finale. Couldn't get a more kickass disc.

Not to say the previous years haven't been great, there's been a whole bunch of standout episodes - and you know, go back and watch the Slitheen episodes. They're actually entertaining on a rewatch. Oh, and much love for Human Nature. Thought I'd add it because... I can?

I wasn't aware that Human Nature was so beloved. Of all my favorites, I thought that would be the one to cause the most discussion. As to the look of season 5, just for fun, go back and watch the first episode of series 1 and then jump to 5. It's astounding. Especially the TARDIS.

Cool episode, but the shows' proclivity to bring the Doctor back based on the wishes of people sort of ruins any sort of tension. Not to mention the whole resurrection thing sort of removes that anyway.

Fun bit of storytelling, and I get why JonathanEx was running around taking pictures of Daleks with fezzes. :lol

We already debated this previously, but The Doctor was not merely thought back into existence by anyone it was by Amy Pond, when the universe was rebooted she was able (due to sleeping next to pure time energy) to refill the world with people that were close to her. In essence she briefly became god-like, yeah at first it's jarring and the episode itself probably didn't emphasize this point enough. But yeah that's what happened...

As long as we're playing the ranking game, my top 10 thus far (in order of airing):

Father's Day
The Girl in the Fireplace
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Human Nature/Family of Blood
Blink
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
Midnight
The Waters of Mars
The Eleventh Hour
The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

Oh, that's 11. Well whatever.

yay, i like lists:

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
The Girl in the Fireplace
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Blink
Human Nature/The Family of Blood
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
Midnight
The Eleventh Hour
The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

worst 5:

New Earth
Fear Her
The Runaway Bride
The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords
Voyage of the Damned

OH BOY LISTS. Mine also in chronological order to prevent lockup.

1. Dalek - Seeing it for the first time now I might not appreciate this episode as much, but it was a great introduction to Daleks, and yes, a great blowup by Eccleston. He and that lone Dalek convinced me to take them seriously as a threat. Unfortunately repeatedly seeing hundreds or billions of them show up and quickly get dismissed over the last few years has largely undone the good this episode did.

2. The Girl in the Fireplace - Of course the show in general is about time travel, but I love it playing a big part beyond just setting the stage. Crazy Turk automata look great. And the reveal of why Madame de Pompadour was being screwed with was nice.

3. Human Nature / Family of Blood - Seeing the Doctor as a proper human dealing with repressed memories was great. That one guy had a great sniff. And DAMN the punishments the Doctor doled out at the end were over-the-top.

4. Blink - What hasn't been said? It was about this time that I really started paying attention to the name Steven Moffat.

5. Turn Left - I love Donna. I love the way this episode shows what an impact a small decision can have. I love the way it shows how much better off Donna is having gone with the Doctor. It's all a big setup to crush me at the end of the series, of course.

6. The Stolen Earth / Journey's End - I know this one gets a bit crazy, but I'm a total sucker for the way it brought back major and secondary characters from the previous four years, as well as the spinoff shows.

7. The Eleventh Hour - With his short time on the program, and the way SciFi aired the first season late leaving a fairly small gap before the second season, Eccleston never got cemented as the Doctor for me the way Tennant did over the next four years. So replacing him was a Big Deal. This episode pulled it off.

8. Vincent and the Doctor - It's not unusual to see the Doctor cross paths with history's esteemed personages, but I feel this one really got it right. I learned something, Amy learned something, and Vincent learned something--even if it didn't change his fate.

9. The Lodger - I kind of feel crazy for putting up the whole last third of this series, but this episode kept me laughing like no other.

10. The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang - If it wasn't for the cliffhanger ending this wouldn't feel like a two-parter, but since they are it takes up only one spot on the list instead of two. Plenty before have already covered how the execution of these episodes helps make up for some events in the last episode that we otherwise might pick at.

:lol I'm sure having watched it freshest in mind has a big part in Fnarg dominating my list. But I did really, really like series 5.

  1. The Eleventh Hour: It was 42 done right.
  2. The Girl in the Fireplace: Most imaginative Moffat script ever.
  3. Vincent and the Doctor: THE TEARS.
  4. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang: I loved how cheeky and fun it was. It pulled no punches with its paradoxes and never belittled the audience with overblown exposition.
  5. Amy's Choice: Another 42 done right. I just wish we had been led to believe Leadworth was real at some point.
  6. Midnight: Best acting by Tennant. Best RTD script.
  7. Human Nature/The Family of Blood: Second best acting by Tennant.
  8. The Doctor Dances/The Empty Child: As if I would have not included this here.
  9. Dalek: Angry Eccleston > Angry Tennant and Smith
  10. The Lodger: Haters gonna hate.

Series Three: 1

In chronological Order.

1. Dalek (yay angry doctor)
2. Fathers Day ( :( )
3. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (Yay Jack)
4. Bad Wolf/The Parting Of The Ways ( Best Scene In All Of New Who )
5. Blink ( no explanation needed )
6. Utopia ( I like to imagine something really cool resulted from this fantastic set up episode.... alas)
7. Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead (yay River)
8. The Eleventh Hour (Great Introduction)
9. Amy's Choice (Made me like Amy)
10. The Lodger (It was fun)

Runner Up:

Army of Ghosts/Age of Steel had they kept it at that and not brought Rose back.

I'm trying to do a top 10. It's hard, I've currently got it down to 13...

Edit: think I've done it.

Empty Child / Doctor Dances (Are you my mummy? Watched this so many times, first exposure to awesome Moffat.)
Bad Wolf / Parting of the Ways (Sure, part 1 was based on pop culture references, but it was a great two parter. Especially the stuff with sending Rose back, and Doctor's speech to the Daleks about saving her.)
Army of Ghosts / Doomsday (That ending. THAT ENDING. Good episodes that come together so so well.)
Human Nature / Family of Blood (Some of Tennant's best acting)
Voyage of the Damned (Screw y'all. Favourite Christmas special. Right good fun. Kylie was brilliant)
Blink (No explanation needed)
Eleventh Hour (Reallly really good episode. Very funny, entertaining and with a good plot. Best introductory episode, and one of the best eps in it's own right
Amy's Choice (Was a very clever and reallly well done episode)
Vincent and the Doctor (Emoottional! Who'da thunk that Curtis and Who would match so well?)
Pandorica Opens / Big Bang (I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool.)

Trying to do a top 10 is odd, cos when I look at each of yours, I see "ooh Dalek, that was really good" and "yes! loved Impossible Planet!" or "Ooh, Turn Left - and when Donna is in the mirrors thinking she'll live and..." and then think fuck, did I get the list right? It's like, how did I put Army of Ghosts in there when I missed out... but, hey, Doomsday ending.

1. Midnight: Best RTD episode imo, it was very chilling.
2. The Eleventh Hour: Fantastic introduction for the next Doctor. :D
3. Dalek: Christopher Eccleston was perfect in this episode.
4. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways
5. The Pandorica Opens/Big Bang
6. Blink
7. Amy's Choice: Probably the only episode Karen was actually really good in.
8. Turn Left: I liked how bleak it felt, how the world would have been without the Doctor. Plus one of the best endings.
9. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead: The introduction
or farewell?
to the fabulous River Song.
10. The Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit

1. Love and Monsters
2. Fear Her
3. Love and Monsters
4. Daleks in Manhattan
5. Love and Monsters
6. Love and Monsters
7. Love and Monsters
8. Love and Monsters
9. Fear Her
10. Love and Monsters

1. Boom Town (obvious filler episode is obvious)
2. New Earth (wtf, so cheesy and NOT in a good way)
3. Love and Monsters (just no)
4. Fear Her (again, filler)
5. Gridlock (boooooooooooooooooring)
6. Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks (best episodes on this list, but still retarded)
7. Last of the Timelords (just this one, the other parts were fine, jesus doctor though /facepalm)
8. Voyage of the Damned (Kylie Minogue can't act, worst villian ever, etc etc)
9. Planet of the Dead (nothing especially bad, just kinda bland and naff)
10. Hungry Earth/Cold Blood (wanting to kill everyone on screen who wasn't the Doctor and Amy is not good)

There’s clearly so such thing as an off-duty day for Doctor Who’s sexy assistant Karen Gillan.

The statuesque redhead was seen stalking through London with a friend yesterday dressed in what appeared to be a white nightgown, teamed with a black leather jacket.

Her alabaster skin was set off by smoky black eye make up and a slash of pink lipstick.

Despite her first series on Doctor Who having only finished being broadcast three weeks ago, Gillan and Matt Smith, who plays the time lord, are already hard at work on the Christmas special.

.....They will be joined by acting veteran Michael Gambon and classical singer Katherine Jenkins.

The Welsh singer enthused: 'I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special - I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever.'

Doctor Who writer Stephen Moffat said: 'We're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and - oh, you'll see.

'I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April.

'My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away
and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically.

Bizarro Amy Pond! make it happen.

bad gameplay lol
Still working my way through Season 1 here. Trying to take it a bit slower than I did Fnarg, since there's no new Who for months. Just got done with The Long Game. Didn't think it was all that great. Actually it was probably my least favorite episode of Season 1 so far. Well, I didn't care for Aliens of London/World War Three too much either, but that was basically because it felt like it didn't need to be a two parter. I guess it wasn't horrible, but it's definitely not one I'll rewatch.

It did have one of the funnier moments in the series thus far though:

The Doctor: Fascinating history, Downing Street. 2000 years ago, this was marshland. 1730, it was occupied by a Mister Chicken - he was a nice man - 1796, this was the Cabinet Room. If the Cabinet was in session, and in danger, these were about the four safest walls in the whole of Great Britain. End of Lesson.
[hits a switch, activating steel safety doors]
The Doctor: Installed in 1991, 3 inches of steel lining every single wall. They'll never get in.
Rose Tyler: But how do we get out?
The Doctor: [nods] Ah.

:lol :lol

(For future reference, should I really be spoiler tagging Season 1 stuff? :lol )

I think there's only been one really bad episode of Doctor Who since its return - Fear Her - that was fucking dire, but it was a last minute replacement for Stephen Fry's episode and they had next to no budget so you can see that - it's all reflected in the final product. There's nice moments in there - The Doctor carrying the Olympic Torch etc - but overall, it's shit.

The rest is great. The Slitheen eps get a bad rep but I agree on rewatch they're not so bad - though you can see they were the first episodes ever filmed and they were in over their heads with prosthetics and effects etc. One thing I will say about those episodes from a writing perspective mind is that it was extremely brave (and clever from a budget perspective) to set that entire second episode almost completely in one room. Good stuff.

Funny fact about the Slitheen - the original draft of The Impossible Planet actually had them instead of the Ood. Well, not the Slitheen, but another family of Raxicoricofalapatorians (how do they spell that? It just kind of typed itself) who were servants to humans. RTD vetoed it, and that started a series of events that ended in the writer of that episode stepping down and refusing to revise it further as he didn't agree with the changes, so RTD had to redo it top to bottom. Only time that's happened and very weird.

I think I'm doing to do a rewatch of the entire show so far over the Summer. Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes first, though.

Though to compare - Amy's Choice was also a last minute change - and that's quite a lot of a new production team. The CGI of Amy's Choice was I believe done by BBC Wales rather than The Mill?

But yeah, that explains some of the problems with Fear Her.

Oh, and Love and Monsters, in the days before they realised how to properly do a Doctor-lite. Hint - no pavement blowjobs.

Love & Monsters is ace :D

Didn't know Amy's Choice was a rush job - might explain why Simon Nye seemed to indicate he wouldn't write another Who (despite saying he enjoyed it).

Well, I couldn't do it. I couldn't come up with 10 bad episodes. I got to about 4-5 and gave up. Now I just moved on to classic Who.

Tom Baker's first appearance was...interesting.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY AMY?

I think she's trying to hide in plain sight. It must be tough walking around London when every kid knows who you are. Being dressed up like that may have made people think she was someone else. I didn't recognise her right away, and I'm sure I wouldn't have thought twice about it if I'd seen this Karen Gillan on the street. I'd have assumed she was just a regular lunatic you see on the streets of any large city centre at the weekend.

EDIT: On second thoughts, this post(my post, not the one I'm quoting) is terrible. There's no mistaking that that's Amy Pond.

Holy hell WhisperingWind, I agree with everything you said, down to your favourite episodes, favourite doctor, opinions of the companions... everything.

Well... the wasp one didn't grab me as much as you, and I would've thrown in Amy's Choice. Still, I have to wonder whether it's a perception over time thing. I watched them all consecutively right up until the end of season 4, then season 5 weekly.

"Robot"? Yes, not one of the best first stories - however, it does lead into a rather awesome run of stories, including a couple of real classics, that kick his tenure off in style.

"What you need is a jolly good smacked bottom!"

Finished Dalek Invasion of Earth this weekend. The thing that's striking with these episodes after watching all the previous ones is how big it seems. Lots of location shooting with shots of London, you can tell they've gone all out for the return of the Daleks. Episode 5 is a little slow, but other than that it's actually a pretty involving story. I love the scenes with Ian and the Doctor.
The final scene with the Doctor and Susan is beautifully played out, and now whiney Susan has gone! The Doctor shows his later selves how it's done. No need to have a little cry, just "double lock" the TARDIS doors and bugger off! 9
