I think Newsom inheriting a turned around CA from Brown and riding it for a few years would make him pretty formidable. There was alot about him that I really didn't care for having lived in SF through his reign, but he is a real charmer on the TV and his move on gay marriage can't be overstated in its effect of pushing things forward.
