Timothy --
With only 38 days to go (!), I want to give you an update on the state of our campaign and this race as a whole.
But before I get into the details, I first want to thank you. Then I want to thank you again. September had its ups and downs -- but with your help and your hard work, we’re starting the final full month of this election stronger than ever.
There are now more than 2.6 million donors to this campaign. In September alone, more than 900,000 people decided to chip in, and together, we raised $154 million to make the case for Hillary, get out the vote, and beat Donald Trump.
Timothy, we don’t know yet where Trump landed -- though if the $18 million he raised in just 24 hours this week was any indication, his September total will likely exceed the $90 million he raised in August. So we need to be prepared for what's to come.
October marks a new moment in this campaign. We have just a month and change left until Election Day, and thanks to Hillary’s masterclass performance on Monday’s debate, we’re beginning the final leg of the race with the wind at our backs.
Before I go on, let's just take a moment to appreciate Hillary, shall we? For 17 months, there's a word that a lot of us at HQ have been using to describe our boss: badass. Well, if you didn't see her that way before last Monday, you -- and just about the whole world -- probably do now. Imagine going on stage in front of 85 million people, with the future of the country on your shoulders and a man willing to say just about anything standing across from you, and performing with that kind of poise, focus, and moral clarity. This woman just does not quit. I have never admired her more than I do this week.
Thankfully, every real poll this week shows that Hillary won the debate. That it wasn’t even close. And -- surprise, surprise -- Trump hasn’t handled the loss well. In the days since Hillary forced Trump to answer for his verbal assaults on women from the debate stage, Trump seems unable to stop himself from discussing his misogyny. He spent the entire week trying to suggest that there's nothing wrong with a decades-long record of racist, sexist comments. Now, nearly every time he speaks or opens his Twitter account, he's talking about some new, cruel jab at women, their looks, and their weight. He’s become unhinged.
Despite all that, the needle on this election hasn’t moved as much as we might wish. Even with Hillary making some gains, the polls are still close, and the forecasts are still tight. That’s how we should expect things to be from here on out. It's just the reality of partisan politics in 2016 -- the country is closely divided. The vast majority of Republicans support Trump, and will continue to no matter how low he stoops. There is nothing he can do that will make him fall below 40% or 42% in the polls.
So no matter how many times Hillary outclasses him, even when she does it in front of 85 million people, we can’t let ourselves believe we have the upper hand. Complacency is fatal in any presidential campaign -- let alone one in which one of the candidates is as unpredictable as he is unprecedented.
So it’s on us to turn Hillary’s debate night win into an Election Day victory. It’s on us to make sure the battleground states that are all pure toss-ups today -- Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina -- become a little bluer with every tomorrow that passes by.
It’s on us to give our all right now, and every day until November 8th.
Because let’s be clear: Election Day is no longer just a single moment. Early voting is already underway (seriously -- voters are voting in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin!) and voter registration deadlines are coming up quickly, so we’re doing our very best to reach every undecided voter before they pick up that ballot. We’re sending our organizers to pound the pavement in Pennsylvania and ring doorbells in Florida, and we’re putting together ads to air in states like New Hampshire and Wisconsin.
We know exactly what we have to do to win this race. But if we don’t step up in October even more than we did in September, we just won’t have the resources we need to execute that plan. We’ll have to choose where to concentrate our money, deciding which battleground states we leave up to chance and which undecided voters we leave on the table for Trump to pick up.
That’s why we ask so much from you. And that’s why we say your dollars make a real, tangible difference. Elections have come down to a couple of votes per precinct before -- and that’s the kind of margin you win over when you help to ship a new ad or deploy another busload of volunteers. Whether we’re able to pay for those necessities depends on what we get from this team.
If you’ve already chipped in and are raring to do even more (you’re the best!), there are so many other ways you can lend us a hand. You can volunteer at local events, use our call tool to connect with key voters, knock on doors in battleground states, or spread our message on social media. No matter what you do, no matter if it’s for 10 minutes or two hours, your work will make a difference.
Timothy, we’re just five weeks away from winning this thing. Just 38 days away from electing someone who will work tirelessly to better the life of each and every American -- a woman who will never stop battling if there’s still progress left to be made.
Let’s finish this fight together. Chip in $50 if you can and let’s sprint across the finish line.
