Pre southern strategy GOP. Democrats of the 1960s and prior in the south were largely racist. When the Dems took the torch on civil rights reforms, Nixon and the GOP decided to pander to the Dixiecrat crowd instead of doing the noble thing and leaving them out to dry.

The Southern Strategy laid the foundation of the GOP of today. Full of racists, clinging to religion, and in general stuck in the past. The Democratic party paid a heavy price in the south that they are still recovering from.

Edit: And California needs to stop putting crap that doesn't belong on the ballot on the ballot like death penalty repeals. The courts or legislature needs to take care of that.
