I'm still of the opinion that the presidency should be a secondary focus compared to house and senate races. The presidency is a coin flip, and the gap between Trump and the next GOP candidate is potentially far larger compared to the potential gap between Hillary and the next Democratic candidate.

I mean, the evidence for democracy is pretty poor right now.

Well look, I didn't say it was a good way of finding a non-racist authoritarian. Just who is popular. Certainly did a better job of that than the RNC would have. Up to us to use the process with better standards

I mean, the republicans ran Reagan and he was their hero.

I honestly don't see why an already politically-involved celebrity like DiCaprio or Winfrey couldn't pull that off. No, he/she isn't a governor like Reagan, but he's adored by people and he already has his nose in the political game.

So last night to lessen my depression I started making a fantasy candidate who won. I named the prez Shepherd cuz of Lost/Mass Effect. lol. Spent most of my time filling out his backstory. Business man, marine in Iraq/Afghanistan, Governor of Utah(lol). I even gave him a wife and 3 children. Started doing the cabinet and then I just decided to smoke a bowl and eat suspicious chinese food. We also won the Senate and almost the house.

President: John Shepherd
VP Gavin Newson
Chief of Staff Xavier Becerra
Sec. of State John Kerry
Sec. of Defense Eric Fanning
Attorney General Tom Perez
Secretary of the Treasury Al Franken
EPA: Al Gore

Poop.

I agree with you. DNC needs to be about building Federal and State seats back up.

George Clooney. He comes with the added benefit of basically being on our side already and giving a shit about the issues.

The general is all charisma. The American electorate is like my brother's dog: they only care about what they care about until a squirrel comes along. We need a squirrel to run.

should i go to a Socialist Alternative rally tomorrow? I feel like this is the kind of thing that gets you on a list under a trump residency and im kind of paranoid about that

I don't think we should seriously turn to celebrities to save us. I agree charisma is key, but we'd essentially be electing neutered figurehead puppets.

I agree. People mistake being good at messaging for having charisma. There are many politicians who are extremely affable in person to person conversations, but get slaughtered on the national stage because they don't know how to communicate a message in a way people understand.

Clinton and Ed Miliband are not at all dissimilar in this respect.

I'm pretty sure that Charisma isn't even a universal thing. History is full of people who could inspire their followers but were loathed by others.

I mean, I'm half-kidding about Clooney. He's just an example of what we need. My point these last few days is we need a charismatic motherfucker. We need a shiny.

I just rewatched Ellison's speech from the convention. He's so good. I don't know if he should head the DNC, though. He should run in 2020.

Also hearing him talk about the "most progressive platform ever" makes me sad for what could have been. I'm so sorry this happened to you, America.

One bright note is that the minimum wage hike passed in all 4 states where it was on the ballot. Also, Prop 60 in CA requiring condoms in porn got a big no.

Go.

I've been saying John Stewart for a few days now, and not as a joke. I just wish he was remotely interested in running.

He might not be shiny enough for the general electorate, but that's the basic idea. We need to find a shiny, a squirrel. The news covered Obama's policy because he was fun to watch, because he was shiny and chrome and captivated us with every word. We need someone with charisma for days.

Why? Why couldn't a white person do this? I'm fine with Ellison but I'd like more than 140 characters of explanation.

Also he should resign from congress.

It's all about avoiding having to actually talk about minority issues.

The lesson so many seem to believe to take from this election is that talking about minorities upsets white folk.

Populism here is assumed to be for white people.

A white populist can't attract minorities because he or she would actually have to talk about the issues

A Minority populist can because he or she doesn't have to talk about minority issues because he or she is assumed to be attractive to minorities just by virtue of being one

This is where the discussion seems to be heading at least.

I disagree. Not only dose Steward have the shine, but he's charismatic as hell, Fast on his feet, funny as all get out and smart. If we could somehow transplant Clinton's ambitious nature into him he'd be unstoppable.

Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!

Love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud.

Oh I agree, I just think he might be a little too self-deprecating.

It doesn't have to be a PoC. The democrats just need anybody charismatic, although a PoC would be great.
There are some significant advantages in not having to have certain conversations and prove credentials when it comes to a certain pool of (white) voters.

Voters don't pay attention to policy. That's now clear.

@brianstelter:
Breaking: Corey Lewandowski resigned from @CNN today. He's expected to take a role in the Trump administration: cnnmon.ie/2fKCsgp

Corey walks into the boss's office.

"Hey, I'm done using you, I'm gonna head back to the mothership."

"Thanks for the ratings, Corey. Sad to see you go. Come back and degrade us some more any time."

Gay friend is now posting about how wrong it is for the post-Trump violence against LGBT to be happening... and he supported Trump.

And after complaining his friends are upset with him for who he supported.

This is why I feel like the nation will learn nothing.

This is why education isn't an answer.

You can't fix this.

The role the Media played in Trump's raise is equal parts tragic and infuriating.

Trump picked on CNN because he knew they were sensitive to a backlash and vulnerable.

Working the refs is effective. Just ask Comey. Expect threats against the media to be a major part of this presidency.

Seriously people. Support the ACLU. Support the SPLC.

I have a great idea on how to win back the heavily white rustbelt. Let's nominate an actual Muslim.

We'll go down in a Reagan style 80/84 landslide.
