The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I've recently come to realize that one of the primary factors in my generally increasing liberalism is just horror and disdain at constant Republican fuckery. They are so good at making me care about an issue that I previously didn't put much thought into, just because they are being such utter god damn shitheads about it.

Like, I can't remember having a particularly strong feeling one way or the other about gay marriage until it became abundantly clear that republicans all over the country were trying their hardest to codify bigotry into state and local laws. I went from not caring much to thinking "fuck you guys, why do you care so much about who wants to get married" and being entirely pro-gay marriage.

Now the same thing is happening for transgender rights. Something I don't have any personal stake in and generally don't put much thought into, but all this bathroom shit is just so fucking stupid and frustrating that I can't help but have a visceral reaction. Like, there is literally a zero percent incidence rate of the kind of shit that republicans are supposedly trying to "defend" against, but they are choosing to make this the biggest god damn issue of the day, so of course I could never think about supporting or voting for someone who would attach themselves to a party that supports that sort of idiocy.

So I guess thanks republicans, for doing such good work in pushing me further to the left virtually every time you decide to make an issue of something that you shouldn't even care about.

Couldn't say it better myself. I'm not full on progressive but the GOP has done shit that just makes me dumbfounded and makes me feel dirty to even ever consider dealing with GOP federal candidates

This is exactly the case for me. It was never something I ever thought about and now I consider it one of the most important issues for me, personally. Even if it has no effect on me at all, and I don't even know anyone who is transgender. But there's no reason to pick on people who aren't doing anything to hurt you. No reason at all. But I'm a person who considers social issues to always be the most important, likely due to my Catholic school upbringing hammering social justice on me since I was a child.

A couple years ago, I'd consider myself a moderate. These days, I'm about as liberal as you can get. There was a point where I thought McCain wouldn't really be that bad of a president at all, and was fine with either him or Obama winning. And now I look back and think that was stupid and now I'm a huge Obama fan boy.

The conservative reactions to Sandy Hook pushed me out of the center on Gun Control.

Ironically, it's not incidents like Sandy Hook that I think need the attention, it's handguns in cities that are the biggest issue. But that was the spark.

Pretty great series of e-mails on TPM from May 2008:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/eight-years-ago

I've given up. I am drowning in the bullshit from the Clinton Campaign. Rendell sucking up to Fox News, there is a diary over at mydd.com calling Obama the "George Wallace" of the left and just now Lanny Davis told Lou Dobbs that if we get to the convention and she is ahead of McCain in the polls, she should be the nominee. The goal posts just moved again. By the time August gets here, it will be cause she wants it. That's it. She wants it, so she gets it. That's all the reason she needs.
The Clinton Campaign is making it clear that they will accept nothing less than the nomination. It doesn't matter how she gets it.

So what do we do? Other than hope Obama doesn't get blown out in PA? Surrender. Any win of 2 points or more will be all the justification she needs to go on. Accept the inevitable and get used to Nominee Clinton.

I have been of the opinion, not shared by many of my fellow Obama supporters, that there is nothing wrong with Clinton staying in until after the primaries are over and the supers declare. However, this kind of thing needs to stop. I hope some of the supers take a look at this, and start to pick up the pace on declarations. I'd like to see it get to the point where there are enough supers declared for Obama where he wins even with Michigan and Florida fully seated.

The thing I worry about, though, is that even if that happens, Clinton still holds the party hostage to some degree. By ginning up such strong sentiments that this thing was "stolen" from her - a sentiment that would be laugh-out-loud funny if the consequences weren't so deadly serious - she is unleashing something that only she can call back. I have been very distressed about this since yesterday. This thing is starting to look very Shakespearean, and I'm worried that after all the dead are accounted for, the last man standing will be John McCain.

I'm probably pretty far away from full-on progressive support of trans rights (I'm not sure about things like stopping puberty for kids, etc.) But the bathroom freakout has pretty decisively crystallized me to full-heartedly agree with the "use whatever damn bathroom you want" position. Yeah, I get the uncomfortableness of it all for most people... but we've had those people in our bathrooms forever (just quietly!), and the world has survived. We've had openly gay people in our bathrooms, and I'm not suddenly getting assaulted every time I use the loo. It just doesn't make sense to freak out about. The actual pervs will get dealt with, same as they always have, and chances are those pervs aren't trans people. It's the most transparent faux-moral panic I've ever seen.

Then again, while I don't consider myself ultra-progressive I've never come close to voting for a Republican at the state or national level, either, so they weren't really selling me anything attractive before this fiasco.

Also I have to say since my Facebook social circle includes a lot of left-and-right leaning individuals I've really been impressed with the trans acquaintances I have stating their case plainly and respectfully. It's always gotta' be frustrating responding to the same questions over and over.

By the end of the month, S4P traffic for May will total ~15 million page views by month and 1.5 million uniques, down from ~2.6 million uniques from April and 30 million page views from April.

It's traffic has gone down to January traffic levels

I have a Berniebro who works with me who says that Bernie will never rally behind Clinton.

I told him that he will look foolish if tries to pull any of that after when President Obama delivers a wise speech on Unity call all Democrats to join together.

It is a given that Obama will make one big important speech about unity. Any dissenters will look juvenile and foolish

Pretty sure Bernie has the virgin vote all locked up.

"Obama MUST use speech to call for unity around Sanders!"

Coming soon to an H.A Goodman article near you.

Union will endorse a Democrat. Not saying who though, at the moment. My guess is Hillary based on what the union president has said.
Union President Dennis Williams said Trump has suggested moving auto production out of Michigan to lower-wage states as a way to stop factory jobs from going to Mexico. He says that won't help the middle class.

It's amazing how Obama can make everyone feel calmer and make everyone feel like everything is going to be alright.

I hate that every president we have in this country can't be like Obama :(
Yes, Obama is a wonderful president despite some big misgivings. I am forever grateful for his presence and the help he gave me.

Gonna miss him.

Bernie Sanders is the worst thing that has happened to the Democratic Party.

I want to change the rules so you can only run for Dem President if you have been a Dem for last 10 years.

I'm sure Bernie would've ran as an independent party if those had any actual sway in American politics. Making the bar even higher to run as one of the only two viable political parties seems like a sure way to make even reasonable shifts in politics impossible.

We've mentioned it several times in this thread... ;-)

It's a fantastic podcast, easily the best political one I know of right now on the democrat side. The episode where they had the never trump guy on was a bit depressing - wonder if he is falling into line now as well...

Wow, how have I not heard about Keeping it 1600 until this very second?

https://soundcloud.com/keepinit1600

This will serve me well during my 7 hour drive to Eureka tonight.

This show is amazing. I'm actually listening to the latest episode right now. Jon's voice is super relaxing and all their episodes are very illuminating. I love all the behind the scenes stories they tell about working in the White House and the '08 campaign.

Oooooohhh, good question! Does he have a twitter? Do we know where he's at?

its not viable because no one runs. If you can actually get someone to clear the viability hurdle you may actually be able to start something.

Nope. If a third party becomes viable it will take over one of the existing parties. It's a mathematically shown truth that in a first past the post system like the USA has that they ultimately always degenerate into a two party model.

You're never going to have more than two main parties. The name might change on one if another party did arise, but that's about it. Like it or not without massive, massive systemic change you will always just have two parties.

The electoral college does not function within a 3 (or more) party system. If one candidate does not win a full majority of the electoral college then the Congress gets to pick whoever they want to be President. Having 3+ viable candidates makes achieving 50% of the electoral votes highly improbable, if not impossible.

If you want more than two choices then that would require constitutional amendments to alter how we elect Presidents.

Yep. To have more than two parties, you'd need a change in how elections work in this country on a fundamental level. The countries with multi party systems are on Parliamentary systems, by and large, for a reason.
