Finally, I've found an easy way to explain the current zombie Sanders thing to people. I deeply apologize if this has been said a billion times before.

Pretend it's election night. A candidate does well enough in the eastern states to where it's clear that the media is only being polite to say they've won before the polls on the west coast have closed, because the loser has a 0.00% chance of pulling it off at that point. That's where we are in this primary. Asking for a debate would be like Romney calling up Obama and demanding vote counting stops and wanting a debate on election night after a after Ohio was called.

Hey, I can extend this to the electoral college, too! Things are -technically- over until all of that is certified! I mean, technically some delegates can screw with things if they want, but wow they'd be bastards! That's also Sanders right now.

She's a better debater than Obama tbh.

Yep. Obama is, of course, fine and at this point has leveled up fifty times over as President so he would absolutely wreck Trump in a debate. But he wasn't really as good vs. Hillary in '08, was serviceable to good against McCain as I recall, and notoriously laid a big fat egg in the first debate against Romney in '12. Really his best moment in all of his debates was just letting Romney hang himself in the second debate.

Hillary was mostly better than Sanders this year and that was in a series of weird-ass pulled-punches one-hand-behind-your-back primary debates.

She might have a vice grip on the the finer points of the political machine, but she's never gonna be dropping those one off soundbyte moments of 2008.

That was not really a great look for Obama back then.

German pharmaceutical company Bayer has offered (unsolicited) to buy American company Monsanto for $62 billion, which includes all of their debts and would be the largest German takeover ever. Monsanto has not commented.

Here we go losing more jobs to Germany. We need to make America great again and keep Monsanto here.

I mean...is this really the largest attempted takeover in German history? :p

A discussion just dies when you realize a person does not know what "real wages" actually stands for and wants to double count inflation to make their argument.

Ah well. I don't know why I bother.

Will nicknames be a part of American politics from 2016 onwards?

I'm having difficulty imagining any mainstream political figure outside of Trump getting away with using the schtick consistently. That said, nicknames in politics aren't exactly new. There's a terrific album by folk singer Oscar Brand, Presidential Campaign Songs 1789-1996 that provides just what it says on the label. Check out one of the, apparently, many campaign songs for William Henry Harrison, "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too". As you might imagine from a song based on such an immortal campaign slogan, the tune is catchy as hell - and, it refers to Martin Van Buren constantly as "Little Van" to the point where you assume Trump was directly referencing this when attacking soon-to-be-utterly-forgotten Marco Rubio. Meanwhile, Harrison was sold to the public as "Old Tip", the original Presidential campaign you'd like to have a beer - or, more appropriately, hard cider - with.

Speaking of this era, I'd like to state for the record that I'm personally disappointed that we still don't roll giant campaign balls from town to town. I'd happily march with the PoliGAF Hillary contingent as we quaff wine coolers and chat "HILLS IS BALLER" at the top of our lungs while staggering from precinct to precinct.

Back to campaign theme songs, Brand's entire album makes for a fascinating listen and has plenty of earworms waiting to infect you with decades - or centuries - old political debates. Any candidate who's slogan you might remember from school has a great song, guaranteed, such as "I Like Ike" or "Get On A Raft With Taft". Other personal favorites include the frankly badass "Adams and Liberty" (which lifts the melody from "To Anacreon in Heaven" years before "The Star Spangled Banner" had a go at it), Millard "Concert Debutante of 1935" Fillmore's "The Union Wagon", and Jimmy Carter capturing the country zeitgeist of his era with "Why Not The Best?". However, the all time champion presidential campaign theme song is "Lincoln and Liberty", which is as rousing an anthem as you could possibly want. It certainly beats the hell out of "Fight Song".

Debating involves a lot more things than just laying out your points better unfortunately. Obama killed Romney in terms of substance in that 1st debate, but got criticized to hell and back because he didn't have any energy. In terms of that, he has always been better than Clinton. Trump might think he could somehow replicate that with his personality, but Obama could carry himself on both and Trump has the policy intelligence of the gnat.

So anybody else think that Trump will talk about how much hotter he thinks Ivanka is compared to Chelsea before the election is over?

Weak-ass conjecture is the controversy, while hundreds of millions was spent on global warming and fighting poverty, with receipts.

Bring it on. The Clinton Foundation is great and needs more attention.

When I went to the Dominican Republic my senior year of high school, it was a pretty common belief throughout the island that, in Haiti, the Foundation was taking in a great deal of money and only putting a small fraction of it back into the local economy in any kind of meaningful way. Trump's campaign strategy is going to be death by a thousand implicating paper cuts.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's stump speech consisted of him reading excerpts from "Time Speeder", the infamous Star Trek:TNG fanfic where Wesley Crusher travels back in time to date Chelsea Clinton.

So...it seems a new detention center is being created for trans people. This is an issue that has been near my heart the last two years.
http://fusion.net/story/305117/transgender-ice-detainees-moving-texas/
U.S. immigration officials are opening a new detention facility in Texas that will include a unit specifically created for transgender individuals, Fusion has confirmed.

“The facility is expected to house about 700 detainees, including a separate 36-bed unit for transgender individuals,” said Carl Rusnok, a spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE.)

ICE says the Prairieland Detention Center will open in November in Alvarado, Texas, and will operate with the agency’s most advanced care guidelines for transgender detainees. Each detainee will have an individualized detention plan “covering items such as searches, clothing options, hygiene practices, medical care, and housing assignments,” Rusnok said.
-
Immigrant rights advocates have urged ICE to release LGBT detainees, especially transgender women, because they are more vulnerable to physical and sexual assaults while in custody. The new facility addresses a number of issues to better protect trans women, but immigrant rights leaders say any new detention center is a step in the wrong direction. The advocates want ICE to instead work more closely with community groups that could house trans women.

A step in the right direction but I really don't trust the federal government (ICE) on this considering what an absolutely horrendous job they've done on handling trans detainees thus far. Makes me really angry Obama has done a poor job in the past of addressing or his lack his thereof to the issue. Any thoughts? I hate how little attention this gets on the wider scale.

I would also note that Romney didn't win Cuban-Americans in 2012. The Castro haters are aging out and being replaced by younger, assimilated Latinos. I don't see why Trump would win them if Romney couldn't.

Trump does not-terrible among Cubans because the anti-Mexican sentiment in Miami is thicker than butter. But many Cuban Americans are still horrified by Trump's bigotry and blatant lack of experience or credibility.

But even if Trump does better with Cubans than Romney did, I just can't imagine him winning over the very liberal Puerto Rican population which now makes up a plurality of Florida Hispanics.

Why does the default 270 map show Trump winning?

Weird, must have been from a map somebody posted in OT. An incognito window shows the battleground map.

Actually, I take my earlier comment back. I don't see Trump winning Nevada under any circumstance.

He would need to flip WI.

This is basically Trump's only path to victory.

I guess technically he does not need to win Iowa.

So Romney's map except swap VA for WI. I guess that's fine. I kinda think PA goes red before WI though.

Trump is the first candidate I believe could change PA to a battleground state, assuming he does well enough on a national scale.

A map in which Trump needs Florida and Colorado and Wisconsin is a map that lets me sleep at night

In a worst case scenario It may very well come down to PA.
If come the evening of Nov 4th, and PA is too close to call, hold onto your butts.

I'll have to check out the demographics between the 2 to see if your supposition holds that way.

Fuck yeah.

More than anything else this cycle, I want Clinton to clean up California (aka the GOAT state). I want there to be no wiggle room for Sanders, no momentum, no bullshit.

I completely stopped caring about this primary the second I mailed in my ballot but seeing the words "Rosario Dawson" today put me in a "I hope Hillary wins big" mood.

This what I think Trump most likely roadmap to victory would be, especially because I think Iowa and Colorado are going to be hard sells for him:

This is what I think the map will actually look like on election night:

Cornel West should be nowhere near the convention let alone on a committee

And?

It wasnt the only tweet, he followed it with this

"Yet only Bernie has authenticity and integrity, whereas Trump is for real but not for right."
"Trump's attacks on precious Mexican brothers and sisters are unconscionable -- even as his blessed mother was born in Scotland..."

what was the point of posting one part of a tweet without any context?

The insinuation that Trump is more authentic than Clinton is laughable.

Guys, he said that Brother Donald tweet last year in August.

So a month after Trump called immigrants from Mexico rapists?

It is good to see that West was willing to call out Trump's horrible racism but the idea that the persona that Trump is feeding white nationalists is 'real' is still completely wrong. Its absurd that someone who positively contrasts Donald Trump with the Democratic nominee should be on platform writing committee.

It'll still/always be Trump's only chance at winning the election so we'll be hearing about it until November 7th. Trump might even spend more time there than in Ohio.

Yeah, i'm of the same opinion now.
I don't see Virginia or Nevada being play at all, so it's all up to PA.

The guy who vetted potential running mates for McCain is vetting running mates for Trump.

Man, I just don't get pharmas sometimes. They throw billions around like its nothing, but throw a fit when a clinical trial site wants money to buy a new weighing scale.
