PS5 seems to be quite silent...

People are putting too much stock in a controlled preview where they mostly played astrobot. And the console only ran for 80 minutes.

Who has an 80 minute game session other than when just trying to squeeze in a play session before having to go somewhere?

It was really quiet !!
Since the site was a studio, there were few things around, but there was lighting and the room temperature felt quite hot. (someone claimed 86º Fahrenheit) I was playing "ASTRO's PLAYROOM" and "Godfall" and didn't notice the sound of the fans (exhaust heat).

Finally, when I touched the main body, I didn't feel much "heat" ... It seems that there is no need to worry about the heat exhaust structure.

To be fair, the Xbox Series X is being run from people's homes, rather than a controlled environment, with much more demanding games than Astro's Playground.

GTA4 360 edition, hitman (with vysnc issues), monster hunter (with vsync issue), sekiro unplayable mess, FF15 running in Lite mode to hit 60fps, Halo 5 not being ready, same with Horizon 4

Versus

Godfall running at 4K60 + RT

"I started playing one of the launch titles, Godfall, and after some time passed, I checked [the temperature]. The breeze coming from the exhaust port was gentle and didn't feel exceedingly hot," wrote 4Gamer.

"During this time, the studio itself was about 30 degrees Celsius. Based on the specifications of the SoC, it operates at around 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. While you may think, 'isn't the fan loud?', it's quite the opposite.

"As previously mentioned, the breeze from the exhaust port was light, and I could barely hear what I believe to have been the fan rotation," it added. "By the way, the studio where we shot was in a basement, and there were four, powerful lights for recording videos on the ceiling, so the room temperature was 30 degrees Celsius."

The publication notes that a typical home environment is likely to be much cooler than the studio they tested PlayStation 5, so it's "quite likely that the PS5's exhaust will not be terribly loud."

It added: "If anything, the main concern should be the size of the unit, so it's necessary to ensure enough space both for the unit as well as ventilation. If you plan to replace your PS4 with a PS5, be sure to account for its size and prepare an additional space of 10 to 15 cm from the front, back, left and right."

Dengeki was similarly impressed with PS5's cooling system, calling the console "exceptionally quiet".

"I want to report that the quietness of the fans was more impressive than the loading times," it wrote. "There must be many people who are interested in this.

"The PS5 was exceptionally quiet! We had about 1 hour and 45 minutes with the unit, and I think it took about 1 hour and 20 minutes to actually start playing the PS5. Since we were in a studio, there was various equipment around, but the room temperature felt hot because of the intense lighting.

"While playing Astro's Playroom and Godfall, I didn't notice the sound of the fan. When I was about to finish playing, I quickly confirmed, 'is this a fan?' Finally, when I touched the main unit, it didn't feel hot.

"It seems there is no need to worry about its cooling and ventilation system. Rather than focus on fan noise or cooling efficiency, I want to express that the size of the main unit was relatively large. Since it is quite bulky, I would recommend placing it somewhere with plenty of room for proper ventilation."

4Gamer and Dengeki are reporting that the console was very silent when they tried it during the PS5 preview event.

They say that the room they were in was around 30 degrees celcius (86ºF) because of the studio lights, and they could barely hear the fan while playing Godfall.
The air flow from the console was warm, but not extremely hot.

Dengeki didn't notice any fan sound when playing Astro's Playroom and Godfall.

"When we were wrapping up the gameplay we thought - huh, was the fan even spinning?"

They say that they played for aroung 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Sounds promising!

My PS4 Pro and all PS4's here have all been silent. Some markets had bad batches. Never cleaned my Pro since 2016 and still pretty dead silent. But 30 degree? Nope, at that heat I would hear it but not noisy.

That's a very important point he is making here. I've seen quite many consoles literally squeezed into shelves without proper space for ventilation.

I guess PS5 and XSX will need even more space around them.

PS5: Running Godfall in 4K 60fps with RT effects under studio lights in a 30 degree room

FUD: Light game in a controlled environment. PS5 possibly off (they felt hot air coming out the back , it's on).

When does it stop? Possibly never.

You meant 'not to hear', right? ;) I'm fed up with my Pro noise too.
I was playing Crash yesterday, and thought "huh, this really stresses the Pro".

It took me a while to realize it was actually my daughter using a hair dryer in another room. I just have come to expect that the thing is loud.

At least some who realised the stupid comparison between a silent hardware that runs old games and a silent hardware that runs new demanding games.

I expect the PS5 to be better at heat management than the PS4, but the games they tried hardly push the system to any limits. The real test will be when people will have had the console for a year or so.

Until it shuts down, you don't need to worry. But yeah, it's annoying. Anyway, my friend used to sell "CDs which will make your child fall asleep". He just recorder 90 minutes of hair dryer. No customer complained, always worked.

Nice to hear but launch titles rarely stress the machine. We're not ultimately going to know until mid gen when we start getting those games whcih start to push against the power. If it was silent when they were on menu screens, it's a good sign though (y)

Later games won't stress the system more because it's built to reduce cpu or gpu frequency when workload gets too high on both.

That's the point. You never overheat that way.

"Influencers" in a heavily controlled environment, including heavily edited videos to remove certain aspects.

I wouldn't trust anything until we have seen the actual console being played live with impressions from somewhere that isnt in a controlled studio.
Cerny touched on the fan output noise of the PS4 as a problem in his PS5 talk. It's something they actively tried to address with the PS5.

Being quiet is a really good news, although I would like to hear from more sources confirming it independently, rather than from a controlled environment with heavy NDA on what can be done/said etc.... At least that's one thing off the check list, even though I do still want to see the internal working of it.

While I have high tolerance of consoles being noisy - less noise is always better!

I thought my PS4 was going to start taxiing off my TV stand in the MGSV chopper menu.

Yeah, in theory the system should have a constant power draw (even with variable clocks on the CPU/GPU), so instead of having to ramp the fan up/down according to usage, the cooling solution can be designed around just a single scenario, making it easier to make quiet too.

That's the theory anyway, we'll see how it pans out.

everyone knows you can't judgeblow drying unless it's in a salon and in the hands of a stylist. Unless you cold blast after heat for volume I'm gonna wait until that blow dryer is in a pros hands for confirmation.

That's not how it works. You can stress a CPU with a single line of code. The fact that developers get better at working with the hardware says nothing about the power usage of a game. Higher clock speeds at longer length of time = more power used = more heat = more fan noise. It's thermodynamics, not game design or developers that control how loud a console gets.

One of the reasons a console gets louder over time is because of dust and the thermal paste drying out. I replaced my PS4 Pro's thermal paste with liquid metal and it's way quieter.

I think it's expected as what Cerny explained about power being always at the same max consumption whatever the context.

Not to be that guy, but what heavy games are they trying?!

If i remember well, no demons or ratchet or morales during these previews and godfall is a crossgen game.

Godfall isn't cross gen.
It has to run on pc that are far slower than a ps5 and it's hardly an impressive looking game, just acceptable.

I don't even care about the noise, but let's judge how much loud is the console with some heavy sony exclusive or third party games.

Could you tell (hear) whether there are 1 or 2 fans on either side of the PS5 since you were close enough to touch the console?

Well, possibly... but a brand new, next gen game running at hi res, hi frame rate and with that amount of assets on screen is a pretty good indicator.

Certainly better than far less resource heavy last gen games.

Great. This is one of the most important things To me: a quiet console.

I hope it stays that quiet. My pro was quiet for 6 months and then went jet engine mode

so based on this rationalization, every console launch SHOULD have at least 1 exclusive "acceptable" looking launch title? It should be an industry standard?

What i'm saying is, don't understimate how much heavier real next-gen exclusives are gonna be, we are far from a ps5 being cnstantly under heavy load, godfall seems pretty static with not very big arenas and far from 50 enemies on screen, it's a pretty lightweight game with 4k and some rtx refections most probably, it honestly doens't look much better than gow except for those 2 things.

Have you ever played Modern Warfare? While in the multiplayer loading menu, where the frame rate is uncapped, where you see your character walking and the other 3 characters joining your squad walking, that's where my PS4 Pro White Destiny 2 bundle sounds like a jet engine about to explode from exceeding it's exhaust limits, and that is with my PS4 Pro sitting out in the open, on top of the TV stand!!!

What? no, that was never my point dude, also ps5 have some very nice looking game at launch like demons remake and ratchet not very later.
what i'm saying is, wait for the previews about temps and noises after they try these fully nextgen games, does it sound that illogic for you? and like i said, i don't give a fuck about the console being loud, the volume of my speakers covers any fans or i just use headphones when i play at night.

yeah. One of the Nioh menus was notorious for this too. It was an uncapped frame rate issue if I remember correctly

Well, okay... but it was a nice - if unspectacular - little demonstration of both the Ps5's speed and quietness for me.

The PS5 is so quiet I couldn't hear it from the US during the hands on in Japan at 5am while I was sleeping. Good Job Sony!

I've played around 180 games, including GOW, TLOU2, and most major titles. It's always silent, and if the room is warm you can hear the fans but very low. I've only seen one crazy PS4 going Jet and it's US market version of early gray market that my sister bought. More than 100 PS4's I've seen in shitty situations and all of them don't even have any hearable sound.

I don't play COD usually so didn't buy that one. I'm 100% that all the reports are true about the noise, but I think our market seems to get another batch of PS4's, probably a matter of factory? Not sure. Never cleaned mine, nor my previous base PS4 that's still working perfectly.

oh sure, every minor good news is still a good news.
it's just that my ps4 was never that loud with the few minor games i played on it, mostly just with the exclusive or stuff like monster hunter world.

You are correct in regards to Nioh, one of my favorite games of last year, with over 240+ hours according to Sony's year-end report I got form them.
