The Long Dark |OT| The True North Strong and Freezing

Having a lot of fun with the PS4 version but also getting a ton of crashes during loading screens. Anyone else with this issue? Original ps4 for what it's worth.

Had one crash on a load in a little 30 min play session. PS4 Pro.
However the opening disclaimer + dev logos have a weird shake to them. :/

Thinking about human enemies and I can see it working really well. Imagine your out in a blizzard starving and freezing to death. Absolutely desperate and on the verge of death. You find a cabin and breathe a sigh of relief. You barely made it by the skin of your teeth. You began looting and then you hear footsteps upstairs. Oh shit. Are they friend or foe?

This legit simulated, or you're talking the real life consequences?

Sorry fellas, I've not played the game yet (will be downloading tonight when I get home from work)...I was just theorizing possible outcomes to actions and entertaining the idea that sometimes the most humane actions at face value can be quite the opposite.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.

Umm yea, I'm going to have to buy this. This is just what I needed for a break from all the major release this year by the looks of it.

EDIT: bought!
Hope the crashes/performance gets sorted out on PS4.

Crashing every few loading screens here, as well (story) on PS4 Pro. :( And experiencing weird flickering on the intro screens and logos/menu.

Otherwise, having a great time!

Gonna wait a bit until the PS4 problems get ironed out and then I think I'm going to grab it. I still have to get through Prey anyways.

Another crash (PS4 Pro). What a bummer. Seems to only happen during loading. :'(

Also, I last played this on PC years ago, and I don't remember wolves waiting for you outside of cars. I was hiding from one inside a car, barely surviving the night, rested for an hour and left the car and was immediately killed by a wolf! Scared the shit out of me!! XD

I love this game and have put a small amount of hours into the sandbox mode. I'll admit I'm nowhere near a pro at this game but to me it seems the story mode has bumped up the difficulty for a player of my skill level by a noticeable amount. I swear there are 3x as many wolves present and they feel far more aggressive to me. Maybe it is because the beginning area is a bit more cramped, leaving less room to navigate around wolves. After reaching one of the first shelters I found, I notice that I am pretty much screwed as I have mostly no clothes or supplies due to being attacked a few times. This would be fine in most cases, but the current save system is wonky and causes frustration when I am faced with a unsalvageable situation. With all that said, the story so far is interesting and the voice acting and cutscene animations are fascinating and enjoyable. I hope I can learn to get good soon so I can continue to experience what the story has to offer.

I feel you! I'm currently stuck in a car hiding from a wolf in the story mode, with almost 0% condition! Not sure how to get out of this one just yet.

Holy shit Wintermute is good.

Like GOOD good.

Great writing and voice acting. Smart intro tutorial area.

Still getting used to the new menu systems that were put in place in the last update or so.

Performs like a dream on PC, though I am getting a random audio drop every 5+ minutes or so. It's only for a second, but it's noticeable. Otherwise the presentation is ace.

Just digging into the story but I like what I'm seeing thus far. It's so weird to play this "Survival" game with an actual story, plot & characters attached.

Thumbs way up so far.

So the story mode is worth it? I held off playing because sandbox survival doesn't appeal to me, so if the story isn't worth it, I may pass entirely. The RPS review leads me to believe it's worth it.

Played for a couple of hours when I got home. No crashes or anything on my Pro knock on a piece of cedar.

Really enjoying the story mode so far. It's still pretty challenging even if you're familiar with the sandbox, especially if you kinda skip the occasional text window like me. ;) I had to restart when I wasted my wood early on and didn't get enough together for a continuous 9 hours.

Tried to cheese past some wolves, took some needless damage because I was too greedy to not fight for some meat and ultimately died like a chump freezing in a car because I didn't want to 'waste' mats on a fire lol. So, pretty normal TLD really.

Wind can blow out torches.....I found this out venturing out from a church to collect firewood and got murdered by a wolf. Really enjoying this story mode so far, but man is it hard. :D

(I haven't played the story mode yet but have sunk dozens of hours into the sandbox/challenges)

From the RPS review, it sounded like the story is kind of boring, if serviceable but where the game shines is in the emergent gameplay that you get between the story bits, which is basically what you have in the Sandbox mode anyway. So the unexpected stuff that can happen while off doing a quest in Story mode is kind of the interesting stuff, which, is sort of the same stuff you get up to in the Sandbox mode all the time, you just have to sort of supply your own motivation for going off and exploring or doing whatever in the open world.

Going to try to dig into Story mode in a bit.

Yea the story kind of blows. Talking soap opera level. When you get to play its fun.

I love snapping the necks of bunnies.

I don't need it to be award winning, just enough to convince me to go from point A to point B while throwing in some unexpected challenges along the way. I think that's how Walker and yourself describe the emergent gameplay bits. I just don't have the patience to do emergent gameplay all the time without something driving me forward.

I don't need a riveting story, like most of you I was just looking for something to give things a bit of focus and purpose.

That said it would certainly be a bonus if it managed to hit some high notes for me, especially with such a stellar voice cast. That talent just feels wasted if the narrative is totally throwaway.

Gonna hopefully dive in within the next hour or two here

It definitely motivates you to go from one point to another and accomplish a set of objectives. I'm only a couple of hours into the story, but it has that for sure. It's also rather difficult, IMO. I like the initial story and am looking forward to where it goes, especially if we get to uncover more clues as to what happened.

The good news is that I haven't seemed to have the bad framerate problems with torches since the very first time I played earlier at lunch. The bad news is that I haven't had a game crash this much since the PS4 version of Battlefield 4 at launch. I've experienced about 10 crashes in four hours. Always during a loading transition entering/exiting a house. Really enjoying the game, though.

Start a campfire! :) Interact with it and then you can melt snow.

Don't forget to boil it!!!

Also, water can weigh alot. To go from dying of dehydration to full is about .12-.15 of a gallon I think, so don't do 2 gallons of water from the get go.

Also, certain foods (condensed milk, etc), provide hydration. But beforewarned, some foods remove hydration (jerky, etc.).

Are all animals hostile?

Really wish there was a way to tame a wolf or bear, that'd be neat. Especially if you are alone, it'd make sense to want some company and to find it in an animal companion.

Lmao I am a disaster

In addition to the injuries you sustain to start, I walked over my campfire 3 times which cause several burns, and drank non potable water which led to dysentery. I applied a bunch of antibiotics and bandages at random and hoped for the best.

Anyways I'm starting to get in the swing of things, I guess I got lucky in the bit of sandbox I've toyed with over the years. I never lasted long enough to really have to figure things out XD

Story is cool so far, the music and voice acting are great.

Rabbits weren't hostile, but that asshole in the earlier GIF murdered one and now I'm pretty sure all rabbits will kill you on sight

Music is great, voice acting is great, still a brutally "realistic" survival simulator, accidentally ate raw meat and died of food poisoning. Probably about halfway through the first episode and I'm really enjoying the story mode.

You can also find water in toilets. They use to have water bottles you could find but I think they got rid of them or at least made them more scarce.

My biggest trouble so far is hypothermia. I get it every minute. I build a fire and wait half an hour IRL and healed. Than I step away literally 5 minutes IRL I have it again. I haven't found any clothes lol..

I am screwed.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
GAF seems to like this and Steam has the best return policy ever. So I just bought this now without knowing tooooo much what to expect.

EDIT: So, I almost played past my 2 hours. I went straight into sandbox. It's pretty intuitive too since the only thing I had to Google was how to boil water and that's just cause I wasn't paying attention. It'll all come together soon. But I wonder if the area is as small as I think it is. Just need to find a source of food, hopefully fishing treats me well.

Initial Impressions:

Currently playing on a base PS4. Have played about 2-3 hours, all story mode. Will dive into sandbox later this week.

I'm really enjoying so far! I'm loving the atmosphere and art design and I'm interested in what's going on so far in the story.

This being my first survival game, the gameplay mechanics and scenarios have been ranging from challenging to straight up frustrating sometimes. I've been able to prevail thanks to meticulous resource use.

As for how well it plays, I notice a momentary slowdown from time to time, but nothing that bothers me personally. However, I have had the game crash twice on me in my 2-3 hours. As others have stated, crashing does occur during loading screes.

All in all, can't wait to continue on tomorrow after work.

As an added bonus, here's all the ways I've died so far: hypothermia, stepping on a campfire of my own making and burning myself to death, drinking bad water and getting sick, and wolves. Fuck these wolves.

Alright, got to the caves and calling it a night.

Strategy question - is it worth it to spend time maxing your temp/thirst/food to full and venturing out for a long while? or do you just manage them as needed?

The Steam equivalent of the drunk friend who keeps offering to pay your tab all night.
They can freeze? I think mine are just wet! I should check all my clothes I guess to make sure they're dry

I found some frozen ones. You can use 2 pairs of socks btw, which is a neat touch.

I played about an hour, hour and half or so, very cool stuff. Feels like a single player game, but also like a survival game, its pretty much what I want from these games (and they never offer it, except for Flame in the Flood).

Got to the
road
, it was very dark, went
inside a car to scavange, got out and got jumped by a wolf and couldnt mash my way out of it
and died. Checkpoint is back at the start of the
road
so it's all good I guess, thats where I stopped.

I was sure I'll die from hypothermia or hunger a few times, instead died from wolf. Game is stressful, you can go from being full to dying pretty fast.

I hope second chapter is longer, because first one's length is a joke. It's literally just the first tutorial area.

Alright some more tips here for y'all as it seems some are struggling:

- Go to your inventory and hit the crafting tab. See the torch? Craft it! Now! Keeping a torch handy means you can light it and it 'can' deter wolves. Its hit or miss, but gives you an extra measure of protection for wolves. And when I say handy, I mean equipped, in hand, ready to light.

- Don't forget you can throw torches too.

- Another item on wolves: if they're eating they really won't fuck with you unless close. If they're in the distance, keep an eye on their movements. They will track and stalk, so sometimes it can be worth it to enter buildings or cars to break line of sight or the trail.

- Keep moving! The most impressive thing about the game is how it can seduce you to hunker down, take your time, and try to 'mine' or peter out the resources in an area. THIS. IS. A. TRAP. Handle immediate needs and concerns, but keep moving. You should only hunker down in a very viable area. Trying to capture/kill all the rabbits in the second area of the tutorial may feel a good choice as you're stalking up on food. But not only are you wasting your resources (sleep, heat, water) in hunting those rabbits, the meat draws wolves. Get what you need and move on.

- Are you moving!? Cars are decent as an immediate temporary shelter, but don't bother searching them each. Jump in, quick look and check of the glove box, move on. There's not really much useful in them so, again, its not usually worth your most useful resource: time.

- Your ultimate goal is a good base of operations. A building/shelter with a place for fire and resources nearby. Even though, don't get to comfortable as if the local wolf population grows, it will be necessary to move.

- When you get a sewing kit, be sure to repair your clothes. The lower the durability (%) of an item, the worse its heat insulation. You'd be surprised by how much having mended clothes will help.

- NO uncooked meat or untreated water. Not even once. The time saved in boiling/cooking will never be worth the dysentery.

In the 4 or so hours I played, I haven't gotten to Chapter III yet. The second Chapter
Town of Milton
is rather substantial.
