Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

Didn't see it posted yet, here are the other titles shown in the EU Direct:

Suprisingly enough, I managed to get Punch Out for £3 last month, and I already bought the Pandora's Tower special edition for £60 ages ago (it's a damn nice special edition though).

Definitely getting Sin and Punishment 2, dunno about Kirby - if they're all £9 for the first week I might get all of them!

SMG2 is up on the EU eShop. Can someone confirm what it has/doesn't have in terms of features? I'm really tempted to buy it, since I have SMG1 on disc but I could never find an affordable copy of SMG2.

Imagine how SMG2 plays on a wii. Now, imagine that but exactly the same and on the Wii U.

Wait so 10$ each? Holy shit I'm so all over that.

I skipped the Wii and just got a WiiU last week. It happens that SMG2, Punch Out and Metroid are 3 of the games I really wanted to play.

Now I really need to find a cheap WiiRemotePlus

Great idea in part of Nintendo, especially since they run natively on Wii hardware inside the Wii U (albeit it does mean it will obviously also be at its original resolution) meaning no wasted resources in porting the games. Too bad it's SMG2 instead of SMG1 though.
I wonder if it's due to the fact that SMG1 is still in stores. I see the Nintendo Selects version at Target all the time.

I bought Galaxy 2 simply for the fact I happen to have a Wii Mote and Nunchuck on hand. No support for Gamepad is just fucking lazy

So for those with questions, this is what I believe it is;

- Direct ports of Wii games to Wii U in digital eShop format.
- Bootable from the main Wii U menu, avoiding having to activate Wii compatibility mode.
- Standard 480p resolution as per original hardware. Games are not rendered higher.
- Wii U GamePad compatibility for titles that had Wii classic controller support. Wii Remote specific titles will not be GamePad compatible.

In short, they're more or less direct ports. That's it. They are not rendered at a higher resolution. They do not have Wii Remote controls hacked to the GamePad. They are as-is, just in digital format, bootable from the Wii U menu, and in the case where Classic Controller was compatible use of the GamePad in its place.

better than wii mode I'll take it

I hate wii mode

now give me a xenoblade wii version

not buying that 3D on eww

meh... seriously how hard would it have been to do a simple HD upgrade? sometimes Nintendo baffles me.

how the hell is an HD upgrade simple? More than likely it's just using Wii mode of Wii U to play the game.. Doing an HD "upgrade" would require either re-coding every single title for Wii U specifically (super costly) or instead using an emulator on Wii U (like VC) at which point taking everything up to 1080p by default can and will lead to different performance results across probably most or all titles. Out of all of the consoles that have had backwards emulation, why do you think none of them scaled the resolution up? Because you are never going to get consistent performance from game to game.

I bought Galaxy 2 simply for the fact I happen to have a Wii Mote and Nunchuck on hand. No support for Gamepad is just fucking lazy

Absolutely. Just make sure to file your complaint under the "5 years too late" section!!!

...this could be a megaton for me.

Hated the Wii-mote controls in Prime 3. I've replayed Prime 1 so much I lost track and replayed Prime 2 at least 4 or 5 times, but couldn't replay Prime 3 a single time. I mean, the fact that it's the weakest of the 3 didn't help, but it still had some cool moments that I wanted to replay. I tried to do so and made it to the first Leviathan seed boss (the one with the big red targets or something) and just quit. Couldn't take the annoying controls annoy more. The waggle roll Wii-mote controls in DKC Returns sucked too.

Might have to rebuy these for Gamepad playability. Ya got me, Nintendo.

But I don't think MP Collection or DKCR have classic control options, do they?

Will Metroid Prime be updated to use the Nintendo Network instead of the dead WiFi? Otherwise there's some (minor) features you can't access.

These are just Wii titles. They might have found a way to use the GamePad as a classic controller but these are still running in Wii mode, only you can boot them from the Wii U menu.

The software is exactly the same as it is on a Wii/in Wii mode, and I presume that the 'Gamepad as a CC' feature will also work with Wii discs.

I'm very happy about Prime Trilogy being confirmed. I've never played the Metroid Primes, but the 2D Metroids are some of my favourite games. Really looking forward to this

Sensor bar is required if it uses the pointer, wiiremote needs the leds to determine the pointer position.

The gamepad has a sensor bar built into it, and I know there's a way to make it work in Wii mode, but dunno if it'll apply for these releases.

This is really nice but after seeing those full HD Mario Galaxy 2 Dolphin screenshots in that other thread, I don't know.

That's more than enough for me, honestly. A "native" "portable" version of Xenoblade is awesome. But I assume that this feature would require a system update to be implemented, right? Any news about that? It's weird that Nintendo would announce it alongside these three titles, yet none of them (or at least the first one to be release) support it.

considering the "sensor bar" is just two IR LEDs, I "believe" they are on by default on the game pad. I guess just stand your game pad up and point your wiimote at it to see.

I'm looking forward to Rythm Heaven on my Wii U - maybe Nintendo will find a way to also map non pointer games to the gamepad. A digipad, 2 buttons and a gyro are all there.

Hopefully they will stay with the 9,99 pricepoint/first week for every game releasing. I can see myself grabbing a whole lot of games that way.

It will. Sensor bar is just two lights, after all (remember people using candles for a sensor bar after Wii's release?). Therefore, the lights in the GamePad that replicate the sensor bar will be all you need here, too. Off-TV play SMG2! :lol

Edit:

What he said. :)

They very clearly stated in the Direct stream that these games are direct ports, so if the original game needs a Wii Remote, then the new version will too. The only change happened at the driver level, which basically fools the game into thinking a Wii U Gamepad is a Wii Classic Controller. That's it.

Will pick up Metroid Trilogy to show support. The same for Punch-Out and Sin & Punishment. The rest I'm cool just booting into Wii Mode.

By the way Nintendo needs to bring back the quick boot to Wii Mode you could do by pressing the B button. Now I have to have two full startups for no good reason.

Disc wii games are still not compatible with the gamepad? :(
cool thing with the digital releases though

This. This is all I want dammit. This is what I need.

Also could they work on allowing the direct boot of Virtual Console titles from systems not available on the Eshop? I would love to play my Neo Geo games without having to go to Wii Mode. Add WiiWare too if it's possible.
