Solid B+

overall a good direct imo.

packed chock full of stuff, even if not all for me, I can appreciate how they have a little something for the whole fan base
Re9 was nice surprise for me personally

wish they showed a bit more 3rd party stuff but I get it was a 1st party....party

Yeah? I don't see how those two things are at odds.

I really can't ( or rather) refuse to rate these Nintendo directs anymore because I realized halfway through the Switch's lifestyle that my taste in Nintendo IPs is narrowing. I can look at what's announced and say 'yeah, a segment of Nintendo fans will love this' but it doesn't resonate with me.

As of now they haven't announced anything that's making me want to replace my Switch OLED, and I'm still waiting for a truly bombastic announcement to really get excited. What would that be for me? A complete balls to walls remake of Ocarina of Time. Super Metroid done in the style of Dread. A new Fzero and Punchout. Fire Emblem and Pokémon fans are eating well, but I'm not into either franchise. Galaxy 2 remaster? Cool, but where's the new 3D Mario announcement. It's been 8 years since Odyssey. Also, all the smoke over the years about a Windwaker Remaster, was that all bullshit?

D+.

Very, very disappointing. Almost everything is 2026. Metroid barely there in spite of being their holidays' game. No new Mario for its 40th anniversary really means Nintendo doesn't care for anniversaries unless it's Zelda. And sorry, any Direct that ends with effing Fire Emblem will always kill any excitement I could muster. I don't know how I could care less for that series.

I've been way more excited for Directs in the WiiU era.

This is an F for me. Legitimately terrible. It was:

1) A bunch of multiplatform stuff I'm not going to play on Switch 2. Dragon Quest VII looked awesome, but there's no chance I'd play it here.
2) A boring looking Yoshi game that, despite that I like Yoshi, doesn't look like it has any chance of matching Wooly World's quality.
3) A new trailer for Metroid Prime 4 that may have completely killed my interest with the open-world bike sections. Why, God? Why?
4) No interesting Switch 2 upgrades announced
5) Fire Emblem, which I'm sure will be good, but it's kinda just more of the same.
6) Mario Galaxy 2 finally getting an HD re-release, which is cool. But it's on Switch 1 and doesn't appear to have a Switch 2 version, so it'll probably have a ton of input lag as a consequence.

There's next to nothing to really look forward to. Really disappointing.

Taken as a generic showcase, there's some solid stuff in here, but it's nothing that gets me excited for the Switch 2, specifically.

Very disappointing. Predictable, safe, and the same usual stuff we're already getting tired of. Sure, a Metroid Prime 4 release date is nice, but that could have been announced much earlier. I'm honestly fed up with Nintendo's "leave everything in the dark until the last minute" communication strategy. It only creates unnecessary anxiety among fans, uncertainty about the Switch 2's release window, and doubt about the consistency of future titles and their launch schedules.

Nintendo has fallen into the habit of relying on a very cautious formula: recycling the same franchises, keeping announcements painfully safe, and avoiding risk at all costs. This is a far cry from the ambitious, groundbreaking Nintendo that once reshaped the industry with bold ideas. By insisting on revealing everything at the very last moment, they not only fail to build meaningful long-term hype but also alienate part of their own community, leaving fans frustrated and constantly second-guessing what's coming next. This strategy might work for short-term marketing bursts, but in the long run it reflects a lack of ambition and transparency — two qualities that used to define Nintendo's strength.
Safe is the right word. I know hyperbole and hot takes are all the rage these days on the internet, so let me preface this. The Switch is by far my favorite system ever. I really truly enjoy a lot of games, first and third party, that came out for the system. Many of them are at or near the top of their franchises. But I have to ask myself, after the 1-2 punch of BOTW/Odyssey, how many first party game announcements truly wowed me on their first reveal? I can think of only two. Astral Chain and Pokemon Legends Arceus.

Again, I don't like hyperbole. Nintendo innovates more than their critics give them credit for. And I get it. Nintendo is blessed to have an absurdly large amount of franchises that people want to play. And other than Mario Party, they don't really overmilk them; it's basically a one new game a generation thing. And with a generation being 8 years, is it really wrong to have a new Mario Tennis or Yoshi every 8 years? They have their fans waiting for them. It's not too soon. I get it. But is that all that Nintendo has? Print out a giant sheet of their franchises at the start of the generation and just start putting checkboxes next to them?

When Metroid Dread or Pikmin 4 or whatever was announced, I was happy. Just as I was to see Fire Emblem today. I am really really glad those games exist. But I already know what to expect coming in. Oh sure, I don't know the particulars. I didn't know Dread would end up being really linear but also work really well as a linear game. But it's still Metroid. Astral Chain? Brand new. Dramatic in scope. Ambitious. I suck at third party action games, I never played DMC or Bayonetta or the like, and I don't even care for anime. But it looked cool enough that I wanted to try it for myself, and ended up loving it. Pokemon Legends Arceus? I like the concept of Pokemon more than the turn based RPGs, and leaning into the experience of just adventuring and exploring with them rather than looking for the next gym was a dream. Ambitious. Along with BOTW, these are the type of games that stand out to me as being an experience on the Switch, rather than just being good or even excellent games.

I mean, I've never played Xenoblade X and I know I won't like it even if I do, but I still kinda think about playing it. It just seems like such a big statement game that I kinda should. And that's the feeling I want more of. That's why I still cling to that concept art from Monolithsoft. Not because I can envision a perfect game from that one picture alone; I don't even care if they don't use it. I just want something new and ambitious from them that doesn't feel like Xenoblade. They have the chops to pull off a "wow" game, they just didn't do it yet. It's why a Startropics game is one of my pipe dreams. Do I care about the NES game? Not really. But because there hasn't been a game since the NES it means they can do whatever they want, and the idea of a new adventure in an essentially new IP is good enough. I'm not necessarily looking for a big 3D 80 hr adventure, but it does need to be ambitious. I don't need it to be a completely brand new franchise, but it should be novel (Pokemon Minecraft may be a new spinoff, but it's still Pokemon Minecraft). It doesn't have to be M-rated (preferably not!), but it should still target someone who's played more than 2 games in the past. And I don't expect 12 of them a year. But maybe more than once every three years please?

Heck, it doesn't even have to be first party. This is a problem with all the major publishers. I may play a half a dozen Metroidvanias a year, so yeah, I'll take generic ones that feel like everything else as long as they are good too. But I still want stuff that will wow me as well.

I think it is a matter of perception.

Nintendo first party announcements were enough for one Direct. We still don't know what to truly make of Pokemon or Metroid Prime 4. But, both are launching in 2025!

It is the AAA 3rd parties that are the problem truly. No Elden Ring, which I assume means they are delaying it.
FFVIIR is 2026, two weeks before the stellar looking DQ7R.

If there was probably two more big 3rd party AAA games announced for NS2, I think people would view the Direct differently.

Any two of the following: Minecraft NS2 edition, Halo, Banjo collection, Metaphor, COD, Assassins Creed, MGS Delta, Avowed, Gears of War 1, Tekken, a PlayStation first party title, Mass Effect Legendary edition or F1 from EA. Any combo of a couple of larger 3rd parties would have changed the outlook dramatically. Even if they didn't launch until 2026.

Edit: I was also surprised by the lack of NS2 editions for NS1 games. No Witcher 3, DQ11, Octopath, Mario Rabbids, Skyrim, Mario Luigi Brothership, Pikmin 4, Luigi Mansion 3, Fire Emblem 3H or Engage, Xenoblade, etc. If they would have had another game or two of those as well.

It is all perception. They just need to get a little more 3rd parties to the help complete the Directs. This seems to be a reoccurring theme. They lean into "COZY" and cozy is not who bought the NS2 at this point. It is hardcore Nintendo fans or early adopters.

I'm pretty happy with it and gave it a B.

-Galaxy/Galaxy 2 (been begging for this)
-Galaxy Amiibo
-Virtual Boy on Nintendo Classics
-Virtual Boy Accessory
-Dragon Quest VII remake
-Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
-Another Sakurai KAR Direct announced (he's adorable)

I just wish Super Mario 3D Land were part of the Galaxy collection, but since Nintendo is double dipping titles from previous collections, I suppose we could see a 3D Land/3D World collection at some point. I still think one of the following will happen, but I wish they would have announced Eternal Darkness or Luigi's Mansion for GameCube classics on NSO.

Despite the disappointing Direct, I honestly don't understand why some people act like playing third-party games on the Switch is some kind of absurd, as if it were a travesty. Really? Not everyone can afford to own multiple systems or invest in a cutting-edge gaming PC. Gaming costs are skyrocketing, and for many people, the Switch is their only platform — and that should be perfectly fine. Switch-only users absolutely have the right to play third-party titles on their system of choice without being shamed for it.

This elitist mentality, where certain players dismiss others for not having "the best" hardware, is nothing more than a toxic echo chamber. It ignores the reality that accessibility and affordability matter in gaming. Third-party releases on Switch might not always match the technical performance of their counterparts, but they still offer the opportunity for more people to enjoy experiences they would otherwise miss. At the end of the day, what truly matters is that games are played and appreciated, not on which box they happen to run.

Prime 4
Fire Emblem
DQ VII
Mario Galaxy Collection
Zelda Age of Calamity

Yeah, the heart wants what it wants. Which is fine, you know what they say about opinions and all that.

I personally think there are maybe 1.5 good-looking, "must-buy" games in that list. And most of that is Mario, a double remaster of decades-old (admittedly great) games, which looks like it isn't even for Switch 2 technically? Not sure how much it will take advantage of the power difference, despite obviously being able to be played there.

Metroid is an interesting case, but I kind of wasn't referring to it with my "2 games" comment, mostly because it's so well known and coming so soon, there's zero surprise factor there, but additionally because the more they show it the LESS excited I am about it. Again, just my opinion, but the bike stuff looks absolutely stupid and it seems like they thought that was some kind of home run, due to the focus on it... but maybe it's super fun and controls real well? With open world elements? I don't know, that could be kind of interesting. That said I've never been into Prime, couldn't get through the original game on GC and didn't get much further than a few hours. So it's already not for me, and is getting even further away from being "for me". And this new one isn't helped by the fact that it looks about exactly as old as its development life dictates... looks more like a Prime remaster rather than some really good-looking "new" flagship game for the console.

All that said, if I do decide to get a Switch 2 there's no doubt I'm getting Prime 4.

Still, overall disappointing. Especially after the major Switch 2 Direct, which for me was easily the best Nintendo showcase I've seen in... decades, probably. Everything since Wii has been pretty much awful, for my sensibilities. Don't remember a stellar GC E3 either, but might just be forgetting something.

Just from the perspective of someone that has a PS5, third-party has zero interest for me on Switch 2.

That said... I think the Switch 2 is poised to be literally the "best", most varied Nintendo console since probably SNES, due to what looks like a big third-party focus. So even though I wouldn't benefit from it personally, I see the appeal. If I hadn't played through stuff like Witcher 3 or FF7R or even the Resident Evils, I'd be really excited for these 3rd party offerings. Just like I might like (re)playing Halo or Indy or GOW or trying Forza on PS5, maybe. One day.

I actually thought the more expensive VirtualBoy was an exact replica with lense and built in hardware and just realised it needs the Switch 2 dropped into it.
The price they are charging is ridiculous and obscene.
That direct was the last straw for me and that Nintendo just aren't worth it to me anymore.

D, and that's honestly too kind but they get a little boost for having anything Metroid related whatsoever, which always gets a bump from me as I'm a shamelessly biased little shit.

B nearing C because
1. VB addon requires +expansion
2. day 1 DLCs are complete garbage
3. That DKBanaza DLC is sad

Most of the other stuff was great though. New Yoshi, Galaxy 2, Tennis, FE etc.

I do wish it had something Xenoblade related for a Switch 2 upgrades, but I can't mark it down for that as that's just what I want personally.

The Mario stuff was pretty bad
The first 40 mins was not good.
I'd wager a large % of the userbase use their Nintendo console for exclusives so the third party stuff a lot of the time is a worse version of something available elsewhere.

Close release dates for Hyrule Warriors: AOI and Metroid Prime 4 was good. Fire Emblem looked cool. Shadowdropped DK dlc is dope. The new megas in pokemon look cool too

i feel the same but it is fun to see a high quality AAA game third party on switch 2 just for the portability Factor.

Software prices are way too high but that's not what this is about… tho I have to mention it.

It was a very solid Direct. Without DQ VII remake it would've been a mid Direct, like a C+. But goddamn… that DQ VII remake… into my veins. Looks so fucking good. Also I'm a sucker for a good Yoshi game, anything to rinse my palette and get rid of the aftertaste of Crafted World. Beyond that, Metroid will be likely a very, very good game when it finally comes out. And glad to have a chance to play Galaxy 2 after so long without needing to emulate it. So, a B. A very solid B.

Disappointed in no 3D Mario tease but we alll know it's happening some time in the next year or two. (It has to be Mario Galaxy 3, right….right??!!). 🌟

One thing i do want to point out. When you are charging $500 minimum for a console, and $1,000.00 for a new iphones. I don't think it is realistic anymore to assume people are owners of multiple consoles.

With the price of well "EVERYTHING" Still rising month over month, it is no longer feasible for most people to buy everything. Thus, I do feel most gamers want as many 3rd parties as possible on whatever platform they game on.

For example, if the end of the Direct would have been something like this: The last 4 announcements were something like:

Minecraft NS2 Edition,
FE3H or Xeno 2 NS2 edition,
Red Dead 2 or Assassins Creed
and then new Fire Emblem.

I think the general consensus would be viewed different tonight.

I feel like fans at Xbox Series launch.
Like they were all expecting a lot of new ambitious games because the last years of Xbox One were so void of anything valuable, and all they got was fucking Halo Infinite, a bad cross gen game, and 2 years after launch they still got nothing.

Well it's not THAT bad but it's really close for me.
Nothing ambitious or marking the gap between S1 and S2, I mean the new Fire Emblem looked like it was an early 360 game in gameplay phases.

They keep adding shit to old games just to milk them AGAIN. Wii U to Switch 1 kind of made sense, but Switch 1 to Switch 2 is just disrespect at this point.

When the most ambitious reveal of your direct is Mario Tennis, it tells a lot about the overall quality.

Nintendo has become fucking cheap since the Wii, but now it feels like they're just testing and pushing boundaries of their fans assholes.

I want the Galaxy double pack and I'm looking forward to the Wonder DLC but that's about it.

It's too soon for $20 Bananza DLC. That annoys me.

Metroid is cool... even if Samus gets on a motorcycle like she's zooming into Tron or whatever.

I personally voted B :)

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Release Date
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment - Release Date
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2
Hades II - Release Date
Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Resident Evil: Requiem
Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 8

There were alot of Video Games in this Nintendo Direct which I'm highly Interested :)

B. you gotta get a passing grade just for bringing mario galaxy 2 to modern systems.

After that, while I didn't get what I wanted most, there were multiple good reveals like the new yoshi and fire emblem games.

I'm surprised Splatoon Raiders was not here I guess it's the fall 26 game

I'm guessing July 2026. Nintendo likes to release Splatoon in the summer, around when school gets out. Splatoon 3 was originally planned for around that time too before it swapped places with Xenoblade 3, presumably because it needed a couple of extra months of polish.

I personally voted B :)

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Release Date
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment - Release Date
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2
Hades II - Release Date
Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Resident Evil: Requiem

Resident Evil 8

if you haven't played re7 or re8 yea I can see being excited for those, they're great (especially 7).

An easy A for me. I'm a Nintendo fanboy so a new Yoshi, more Metroid, finally Galaxy 2 and the Mario movie release date was all great for me! Mario Tennis and DLC for DK Bananza is awesome shit! Yeah, I'm loving what they showed. This year is fucking going to kill me with all the great stuff coming out! Mortal Kombat collection out next month was nice too (although I am getting it physical on PS5).

Pretty mediocre for me. I love Mario, but the Mario segment was too long. So is the Pokemon segment. Not really feeling the new Fire Emblem, not liking the character design. Maybe I'll change my mind with more info.

Metroid looks like a switch 1 game because it is. So long its 4k/60 fps when docked on my oled tv.
But Hades 2 ---> Hyrule Warriors --> Metroid Prime 4 is a solid end for Switch 2 year 1.

I actually like the expansion of Nintendo, so I was into the 40th anniversary announcements. The museum I hope to go to one day during a trip to Japan, I'm definitely going to check out the theme park in Florida, and I am not expecting anything deep (like the first one), but I'll definitely go see the Super Mario Galaxy movie.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 I am mixed on. I have Super Mario 3D All-Stars already, but I would definitely like to have SMG2 on this platform and it will be in physical format. I don't love the price, think they could have released these together for $50 or $60 and people would have been fine. $70 bundle and $40 each digitally? That's asking a bit much, I think.

It's really hard to judge some of the DLC so far, some of it could be good but a lot seems like tacked on experiments Nintendo decided to monetize. On one hand, it's kind of a waste and seems like bad value, but on the other it also means it's not a must-have unless you are a really big fan of the game.

Hades 2 looked great, and not sure if the trailer pre-existed but it got me hyped.

It's clear Yoshi is just Nintendo's franchise to fuck around with art style and weirdness to see if it works out.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment looks good and I enjoy how they're taking this approach to fleshing out the universe, though it does look to just be more Warriors which I am easily burnt out on.

Virtual Boy Classics does not make me excited at all, though I do think it's cool they actually made the hardware (and thankfully there is a cheap cardboard adapter for anyone who is curious but doesn't want to drop $100 on the replica).

Metroid Prime 4 gameplay looks like Metroid Prime, except for all of the master cycle zero motorcycle bit. Not sure how I feel but happy to see a release date that confirms it's their big holiday game this year. I will need to play Prime 3 in anticipation.

DK Bananza paid DLC this soon after launch is kind of shitty though it does look fun.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 looks pretty good.

And I am always down for more Fire Emblem. This one seems like more of a departure from the typical kind of story - good or bad? Not sure yet but I'm interested.

I really don't care about all the third party GKCs myself, but glad they're happening for others. I don't see how these ports won't be extremely downgraded though.

Overall a mid Direct, to me a C despite a couple exciting developments. Glad to s

E for me, I barely se anything I wanted to play and the few ganes I wanted to play were either known or comes to PC, like the LEGO game.

Not sure about the bike in Metroid either, for me that's not Metroid or a Metroidvania mechanic, just show they've made the world too big or haven't figured out a good way to merge the different areas.

It was an average C direct for me, But was pretty much what I was expecting as we pretty much knew Nintendo had in store for this year. The Switch 2 has started off very strong and will have the usual holiday sales bump. I also think they are handling the transition between the original Switch and Switch 2 pretty well. And over time this will be a very simple migration for many.

I want the Galaxy double pack and I'm looking forward to the Wonder DLC but that's about it.

It's too soon for $20 Bananza DLC. That annoys me.
Double pack is also extremely greedily priced (even worse each version digitally) and Super Mario Wonder seems to continue the trend of not allowing you to get the Switch 2 version upgrade unless you buy the DLC as well that Kirby started. They are also not giving the DLCs with the NSO expansion pack either, but that is minor.

Any other company releasing paid DLC less than 2 months after release would get absolutely obliterated, yet Nintendo gets a pass? 🤦
