Not sure why they made it 60+ minutes without the content for it - it probably would have come across better around 25 minutes.

Also strange that for a Direct largely focused on old / already known third party games coming to Switch and Switch 1 games getting paid NS2 DLC, they didn't announce any first party free NS2 performance updates (except for Galaxy 1+2, which they didn't even say in the Direct). Seems like that would have been an easy win.

Is anything launching in January? They need to be cranking shit out that is actually new
Nah. Just FF7 Remake. I think first party leaving January empty is acceptable considering they are launching SMG1/2, Pokemon ZA, Hyrule Warriors, Kirby Air Riders, and MP4 all within a two month time span.

I do think FF7 Remake should be a week earlier in January considering Square Enix is launching DQ7 only two weeks later.

It was... passable. Age of Imprisonment is part of what made me buy a Switch 2 though, so having more gameplay and characters, as well as a (sooner than expected) release date, brings it to a B.

I think the biggest issue is that folks was hoping that this direct would generate some hype and it didn't really do that. This direct was a B-. It really needed better direction and arrangement for the direct.

Double pack is also extremely greedily priced (even worse each version digitally) and Super Mario Wonder seems to continue the trend of not allowing you to get the Switch 2 version upgrade unless you buy the DLC as well that Kirby started. They are also not giving the DLCs with the NSO expansion pack either, but that is minor.
I'm not surprised by the price of the Galaxy double pack. People should be expecting by now that Nintendo is going to charge a premium for their older games. I'm not suggesting that people have to like it, but it really is just how it works with Nintendo now. I'd recommend people not succumb to FOMO and just not buy them if price is an issue.

I don't so much mind paying more for the Wonder DLC if it really brings fun new content to the game. I can see NSO subscribers being annoyed that the perks we enjoyed on Switch 1 aren't moving forward for Switch 2. I think folks should just drop the service if the value isn't there. That gives them an extra 50 bucks per year to spend on content they may want.

I feel like fans at Xbox Series launch.
Like they were all expecting a lot of new ambitious games because the last years of Xbox One were so void of anything valuable, and all they got was fucking Halo Infinite, a bad cross gen game, and 2 years after launch they still got nothing.

Well it's not THAT bad but it's really close for me.
Nothing ambitious or marking the gap between S1 and S2, I mean the new Fire Emblem looked like it was an early 360 game in gameplay phases.

They keep adding shit to old games just to milk them AGAIN. Wii U to Switch 1 kind of made sense, but Switch 1 to Switch 2 is just disrespect at this point.

When the most ambitious reveal of your direct is Mario Tennis, it tells a lot about the overall quality.

Nintendo has become fucking cheap since the Wii, but now it feels like they're just testing and pushing boundaries of their fans assholes.
So basically you just Hate Nintendo and would have been displeased regardless of what they did...got it.

I think it was shit but both resident evil and ff7 further cement the fact that the switch 2 is firmly a current generation console and that's a good news. It's just frustrating to not see more/better games so far.

Nintendo, from a first party perspective, it's getting lazy and complacent, and give the impression of testing how much they can milk people. I prefer struggling Nintendo.

D from me, too many remakes or just ports, Paid DLC for Pokemon before it releases, No new Mario game? the only game that made me happy was Fire Emblem.

A 'C' from me... if I was 4 years old, probably a higher score. To me the whole thing felt like a toy presentation.
Also, it feels like the Switch 2 was launched a year too soon (even though in reality it launched a year or two too late), as everything still focused on Switch 1.
Even though the Switch 2 is selling gang busters, I still feel Nintendo itself has gone up it's own arse.

So basically you just Hate Nintendo and would have been displeased regardless of what they did...got it.
Basically you'll just gobble up whatever Nintendo is putting out Mr Bootlicking, got it.

I'm a fan of Nintendo in the NES-SNES-N64-GC era.

They did some good games (even great) on Switch. But if this show is what you're expecting of them, it just means that your quality bar is really low and your self esteem too, because you accept to be taken for a fool and a living money printer.

It amazes me how Nintendo has 3 times as many (compared to the other platforms) exclusive 1st party games announced and releasing either this year or next and yet people still find a way to be underwhelemed and upset. If seeing releases date and/or announcements for Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Sports, Pokémon games and among other 1st party titles like Tomadachi Life does nothing for you and still consider it a "Failure" then chances are you just aren't a fan of Nintendo period.

Nintendo literally announced release dates for at least 6 titles from many major franchises...meanwhile we know nothing about Sony games this year (or next) outside of GOY and yet Nintendo seemingly gets much more flak for actually having games to announce/release than Sony does for having absolute Jack shit announced...(from some ppl at least)

Probably not the best time to share this "gaming memory," Nintendo Today:

Fire Emblem looked great, especially after the last one. Prime 4 being open world looked intriguing. The 40th anniversary for Mario was underwhelming, but I guess that's what happens when you give DK to the Mario team.

All in all, solid, but not a lot for me personally.

C, I think. Fire Emblem looked interesting, so did Metroid Prime 4. Loved the DQ7 Remake.

But a lot of Switch 2 Editions of games, which will probably cost money (which they shouldn't, imho). And overpriced "remasters" of the Galaxy games... for Mario's 40th Anniversary, I expected more.

C. Yoshi game looks amazing, and it's good Mario Galaxy 2 is making the jump. But, I literally shouted "do you have no shame?" when switch 2 editions started showing up, followed by switch 1 games and console exclusives that could pass for licensed mobile games.

Overal, I like we are getting something that is not Mario/Zelda/smash right way, but is still frustrating to see these partnerships with underwhelming developer even after switch was such succes. Can we get more of blooddusk, and less of simulator games?

I'm not sure...this was a tough one for me to grade. I found most of the Mario stuff pretty boring to be honest, especially that Yoshi game. I don't know why they can't make another Yoshi game as good as the original Yoshi's Island.

Even stuff like Dragon Quest 7 doesn't make me super crazy, because it's the worst DQ game I've played to be honest. The announcement of a remake was a big of a shocking surprise though, and it felt like it came out of no where. I would've been happier if we were finally getting an English release of Dragon Quest 10 offline.

Then we have the Virtual Boy stuff which...again is really cool, and I totally want that accessory, but I hate all the retro stuff being tied to subscription service. I want to own the games, not pay for them until they take them away.

I think the best showing for me was Metroid Prime 4 because it actually looked new and different. All previous showing made the game kinda look like "oh, it's just another Metroid prime", but the open environments make this game look a lot more different and interesting to me now. I'm also glad to see it wasn't push out of 2025.

That Ditto pokemon game looks like it could be fun. The ditto is nightmare fuel, lol.

Not super happy with all the paid DLC stuff because it feels like they're holding stuff back now like some other shitty publishers. The DK Bananza stuff is so soon after release that it feels like stuff that was held back. The Pokemon DLC being announcement before the game is out also feels shitty. Showing Nintendo wants to just keep pushing the greed button.

I'm confused why we're getting just a remake of sorts of Danganronpa 2, and not 1 first. 2 is fine, but I think I kinda like the first one more.

I wish I could be excited for any third party release on Switch 2, but they all seem to come with that game key card bull shit making me not want to buy any of them. Can't be excited about Dragon Quest 7, Final Fantasy 7 remake, Dynasty Warriors Origins, or the Resident Evil games coming to Switch 2 when I just know they're game key cards.

Fire Emblem looks alright I guess. Not crazy about some of the character designs, but I am intrigued to see Sothis again. I thought she lost her essence when she gave it to Byleth, unless this is a prequel.

Metroid Prime 4 release date announcement trailer should have been an event but they made a 2 minute long cheap ass trailer showing low poly motorbike and ugly desert open-world. That was so weird.

I voted E, mario 40th anniversary was underwhelming.

Personally I don't demand that a commercial for the company with the most diverse userbase in the industry (ok, maybe Steam is more diverse. But definitely more diverse than Sony or Microsoft) to personally entertain me, so I don't care about "rating" a direct.

For me personally? If this was intended to get me to pick up a Switch 2 ASAP it failed. But it didn't convince me to delay a purchase indefinitely at least. The only new game that is a must get for me is Fire Emblem and we don't have a date for that. So yeah, that's disappointing. FF7 getting a release data in January (and Metroid in December) at least calmed some nerves. With FF7, DK, and me likely not playing Metroid or Pokemon until early next year anyway, at least it's starting to look like a hardware I would be interested in. I may still wait until after a February direct though.

I'm really happy to see Mario Galaxy 2 finally, especially since I never played it on the Wii. Sad about the price, but costs have gone up so much the past 5 years its not too surprising.

I have no interest in horror, but RE9 getting a release at least spells good news for other third party releases.

Glad to finally see something different with Metroid. I'll withhold judgement on how it works until I play it. I can see it being really useful and a good idea, but just as easily see it diluting gameplay and not meaning much. I'm just not certain this game will be something special yet. I bought Dread day 1 and didn't regret it. The original Prime remains one of my favorite games of all time. But this hasn't reached that level yet surprisingly. Maybe it's the fact that Prime 3 left a sour taste in my mouth. I don't know. I'm sure it will be fine, but I want more than "fine."

Gotta admit, Virtual Boy was completely unexpected. Pokemon Minecraft was also unexpected, but at least makes sense in hindsight.

One frustrating thing to me about the Switch 2 so far is that, despite the "hardcore" being the most likely to be early adopters, their games seem to be an afterthought. It's fine that Yoshi is getting a new game. But it's hardly an exciting one. Pokemon Minecraft makes sense from a money standpoint. But that doesn't exactly appeal to us old men demographic. Mario Tennis is understandable, but multiplayer focused. So it's fine that those games exist, but where are the interesting more traditional single player games? Donkey Kong? Great! Age of Imprisonment? OK, fine, but it's the 3rd one in the series and tied so closely to one game and one game only that I'd rather just play Hyrule Warriors. Pokemon Z-A and Metroid? Thanks, but they're also on Switch. Fire Emblem? Great! But could be September next year for all we know. What else is there? I don't need 80 hr M-rated RPGs or whatever. I'd be happy with a Captain Toad. But I just want more single player games with interesting mechanics based on semi-traditional gameplay. Is that so much to ask?
Old man demographic here (46 year old who grew up with Atari to NES in the 80s). I also don't play multiplayer anymore, unless it's local with my wife or company.

Having a blast playing EV golf, Cyberpunk, Donkey Kong, Star wars outlaws, and tons of other games.

I thought the direct was fine. My expectations aren't high though. The way I look at it is that Nintendo already did their direct this year. Aren't directs supposed to take the spot of E3? if that is the case then we already got a new system, new mario kart, new Donkey Kong game, new Kirby, and a bunch of 3rd party ports. Plus we are now getting more games, these to me are extras this year.

I still have my switch 1 and I use it when playing games outside or somewhere I need more battery life or is more risky to play. My switch backlog is over 200+ games between digital and physical. Being in the "old man demo" means I don't have time like I did when i was a teenager or early 20 something. I no longer stay up to 2-3 am playing games. I get an hour here or there. My backlog from switch 1 carries over.

So for me this year games I already have for switch 2 (or will get when they release, also I didn't get mario kart):
Donkey Kong (sw2 exclusive)
Braverly Default (sw2 exclusive)
Star Wars Outcasts (switch 2)
Kronos - (switch 2)
Street Fighter 6 (switch2)
Super mario party Jamboree (switch 2)
Rune Factory Azuma ( new game this year that had switch 2 upgrade)
Fantasy Life ( new game this year that had switch 2 upgrade)
Raidou (switch 2 version)
Suikoden collection (switch 1 game, didn't buy the upgrade, not worth it for full price)
Cyberpunk 2077 - (amazing what they did here on the switch 2 , all on cart too. Also crossplay with ps5/pc)
Shadow Labyrinth - (switch 1/2)
Fusion RMX (sw2 exclusive)
Everybody's Golf Hot shots - already put in 20+ hours on both consoles (love this game)
Lunar Collection (switch 1 game works on switch 2)
Patapon replay (switch 1 game works on switch 2)
Hexen/Heritic (switch 1/2)
Chronicle of the wolf (switch 1 game works on switch 2)
System Shock 2 remake (switch 1 game works on switch 2, but works way better on switch 2)
Front Mission 3 - (remaster on switch 1/2)
Star Overdrive (switch 1 game works better on switch 2)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (remaster on switch 1/2)
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance - (switch 1/2)
SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered (switch 1/2)
Romancing Saga 2 (switch 1 with 2 upgrade)
Dragon Quest 1 and 2 remake (switch 1 and 2)
Pac man world 2 (switch 1 and 2)
Disgaea 7 ( switch 2 upgrade ver)
Tomb Raider IV-VI (switch 1 and 2)
Gradius Origins (switch 1 and 2)
Blade Chimera (switch 1 and 2)
Legend of Heroes Trials in the sky remake (switch 1/2)
Adventures of Samsara (switch 1/2)
Dragon Ruins (switch 1/2)
Class of Heroes 3 (switch 1/2)
Metroid Prime 4 (switch 2)
Mario Galaxy col. (switch 1/2)
Mortal Kombat col (switch 1/2)
Once apon a Katamari (Switch 1/2)
Tales of Xilla remastered (switch 1/2)
Hollow Knight Silksong (switch 1/2)
Final fantasy tactics (switch 1/2)
Octopath Traveller 0 (switch 1/2)
Borderlands 4
Yakuza Kiawami 0

2026
Dragon Quest VII (switch)
FF VII remake

There are tons of games out this year. All these are single player games. We are getting games in spades, 1st and 3rd party. Compare Nintendo's output to Sony and Xbox. It doesnt' even compare.

I own a steam deck, gaming pc, ps5 and series x. PC and Switch game content is off the charts compared to Sony and Xbox. It's not even close.
If all you play is multiplayer shooters or huge AAA games that come once a generation anymore than sure ps5 is good for that, but the game content is pitiful and first party for ps5 has been shit.

Yes many of these can be played on other systems but the portability and being able to go anywhere and back to the couch is priceless.

Hades II date is pretty big for me, and I love the weird stuff like the Virtual Boy.

Would have liked to have seen a big Switch 2 title that really showed what's possible, as I believe both MKW and Bananza both started as Switch titles. Everyone wants to see what the Zelda team can do with PS4-esque performance.

Didn't realise Metroid Prime 4 and Octopath 0 are coming out at the same time. Guess I'm buying two games that day!

C

Metroid was a shining beacon of greatness, and Hades 2 looked impressive. Beyond that...

Imprisoning War looks solid but was it really needed when they could have just released a Switch 2 Edition of Age of Calamity?

Yoshi looks interesting, brings back memories of Yoshi's Story which is a plus in my book.

Overpriced remasters of Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are disappointing.

Another 40 minute Kirby direct? Really? Did anyone ask for this?

Mario Wonder did need a Switch 2 Edition... But you went the other direction and added multiplayer modes instead of fleshing out the campaign.

Resident Evil 9 looks meh. Village & 7 are ok, but come on Capcom. You know the Nintendo fanbase wants the remakes. Why stall?

Fire Emblem looks cool... but is it actually going to make it in 2026? Three Houses deserves a Switch 2 Edition in the meantime.

Mario Tennis... Uh we just got Mario Kart. And it needs DLC.

Pokemon... Does not look as fun as Arceus. We will see though

Where in the blue hell is the Metroid Prime Trilogy?

Overall though, there was a surprising amount of 2026 games, and it kinda gives you the flow of next year.

Mario Tennis & Wonder, Yoshi, Tomodatchi Life, and Pokepia seem to round out the first half of 2026 which is...

At least there is the Dragon Quest remake.

Only interested in RE9 but not counting that since it's not a actual exclusive so D with I'm only including exclusives because of a slight interest in Metroid Prime 4 and Zelda age of Imprisonment but overall not really into them that much.

Okay, gang. It's been just about a week since the big fall Direct. The first software-only Direct of the Switch 2 era. Combining the Mario 40th Anniversary plans with the standard length ~45 minute Direct. How are we feeling about this one?

My hot take the morning of, I was at a solid B. I'm a huge fan of the Galaxy games, I love DQ, so the announcement of VII Reimagined just blew me away. I also thought Yoshi looked phenomenal. I thought the bike in MP4 looked really cool and we finally got our release date. And the One More Thing was the next mainline Fire Emblem for 2026. Not as epic as TTYD from two years ago, but still a big one for FE fans. Where are we at with this one now we've had some time to absorb? I'd still give it a B. And I fully accept that some Directs happen to contain multiple announcements more suited to my favorite series than others. If this was full of Smash, Splatoon and Pokemon I'd certainly have been disappointed.

I think pound-for-pound, I'd put this up there with some of the better Directs of the Switch era. Mario Galaxy 1+2, Mario Wonder S2E + DLC, Yoshi, DQ VII, Metroid bike reveal and release date, FF VIIR release date, RE 7, 8 and 9 native Switch 2 versions... there was some good stuff in there, for sure.

September 2018 and February 2019 are still my Tops, but this one and the June 2024 Direct are runner-ups. Of course, it's all down to personal taste. But what did y'all think now you've had some time to digest??

Some other thoughts...

Switch 1 reveals were borderline non-existent? Galaxy 1+2, the heavily rumored Kirby Robobot remake was a no-show again, but where's all the Switch 1 software for now thru first half 2026? Just Galaxy remasters and Tomodatchi Life? Yikes. 3DS got pretty solid support for two years through first half 2019.

Elden Ring Tarnished was a total no-show, and didn't even have a blip in the sizzle reel. Slated for 2025 and announced back in April at the Switch 2 debut. Where is it? Quietly pushed to 2026 to work on the performance? They can't do a shadow drop because it has a physical version and it's also being released as Tarnished Pack for the other platforms. Where is Elden Ring? :pie_thinking:

In general...Nintendo does not seem interested on selling us the future of Switch 2, they seem to only want to show us what's coming within the next ~6 months, which typicall for a brand new generation you would expect them to show some small glimpses of the future. At the first E3 of Switch 1 (3 months after launch), we got teases of Kirby, Yoshi and Metroid Prime 4 (all 2018 or later) plus the first holiday deep dive into Mario, Xenoblade 2, etc. They aren't doing that this time. I think it might be a mistake.

It wasn't as bad as I originally rated it (which was an E) but it definitely wasn't good. Probably a C or D.

Interesting. What single announcement could they have made that would change it for you? I think for me had DQ VII Remake not been there as a brand new reveal, I'd probably drop it to a C.

Mario Maker 3 would have launched it to an A for me. I want to be able to make levels using the mouse so badly.

But a 3D Mario, new Star Fox, new F-Zero (or maybe a Captain Falcon adventure game?), new Punch-Out, or something they haven't done for a while would have been great. They also should have done way more for Mario's 40th. The least they could have done is brought back Mario 35 (only with 40 players now).
