Hmm.. unlike last year, I will post some predictions. I don't know how accurate I'll be, but I'll go with my guts.
West

San Jose vs Colorado in 5 there is no reason that San Jose should choke at all against the avs. None at all. This is no Anaheim team. I'm no San Jose fan, but I think they can get it done quickly.
Chicago vs Nashville in 5 I know goaltending is an issue for Chicago, but I think they can get it done in 5. Nashville is hardworking, but I just don't think they have what it takes to stand up to Chicago.
Vancouver vs Los Angeles in 6 I live in Vancouver, I'm a Vancouver fan (have been since the days of the 94 cup run, and the horrid late 90s). If they get the D that they need (I'm not worried about Luongo) Vancouver should be able to win. However, I don't think LA is going to go easy, and I expect them to be in every game. I would not be surprised if LA won the series.
Phoenix vs Detroit in 7 Yeah, I think Detroit will win, but I'm not so sure if it will be as easy as some people think. However, I can't bet against the playoff hardened wings.

East

Washington vs Montreal in 5 could be a sweep, but I think Montreal will find a way to win one. Probably game 4.
New Jersey vs Philadelphia in 7 That's right I'm picking the upset. Brodeur has always been good/great, but I think he might slide a bit this year.
Buffalo vs Boston in 6 Bruins can't score. In the end though, I don't know a whole lot about either team, so whatever.
Pittsburgh vs Ottawa in 5 I can't see the Penguins slacking off here. I'm sure they will step up their game.

Brodeur's been sliding in the playoffs since the lockout. People seem to glaze over this fact because of his historical importance and all-time statistics.

I am working on a backstrom highlight video as of now :D

he has some really pretty goals and plays this season

I was hoping he would get a hat trick this season. He had a lot of great 2 goal games.

Oh the Sharks will disappoint alright, but not in the 1st round. They'll beat the Avs pretty easily to give their fans hope (it's a good thing) and then crash and burn in the 2nd round.

Hopefully we have the dead shark pictures ready for the occasion.

No I am pretty sure they will choke in the first round, if not I will put the sharks' logo as my avatar for a whole month.

I know, I know, this thread was lacking them though (its not too early to be prepared), I needed some reassurance that the tradition continues.

Stars kicking Turco to the curb:

AP said:
DALLAS - Goaltender Marty Turco's time with the Dallas Stars is over.

General manager Joe Nieuwendyk says the Stars will not re-sign Turco, who just completed his ninth season with the team. Nieuwendyk said Tuesday that he felt it was time to go "in a different direction."

Kari Lehtonen, acquired from Atlanta in February, will go into next season as the team's top goaltender.

The 34-year-old Turco just completed a $22.8 million, four-year contract he signed in January 2006 that kept him from becoming a free agent at the end of that season.

In 509 regular season games for Dallas, Turco won 262 games with a .911 save percentage and 2.31 goals-against average. He appeared in 47 playoff games.

-Associated Press

Big summer for Dallas. They need to find something... anything that works. Crawford needs to shoulder some of the blame here and make some changes to his "system." Above all, we NEED A BLUE-LINE. Our defense and penalty kill are terrible and Turco is taking the fall for something that's only about 60% his fault.

Fix it Crawford, or get the hell out of town.

Thanks for a great 9 years Marty. He became the starter in 02/03, set the lowest GAA mark of all time for a single season (1.72 - broken the following year by Kiprusoff), finished first in save% with .932, and was second in the Vezina voting behind Brodeur. Sure he struggled in the playoffs but he got us to the WCF twice and was a great follow-up to Ed Belfour. He's got pretty much every Dallas goaltending record:

most wins
most shutouts
most games played
most minutes played by a goaltender
most consecutive games played
most assists by a goalie

marty_turco_michigan.jpg

He's tied with Brodeur for the league record of most shutouts in a single playoff series (3)

He pretty much changed the way forechecking works in the NHL and how goalies handle the puck.

Best of luck to you Turco!

Damn, you let in some soft goals these last two years but I wish you all the best!

it wasn't funny

I do feel bad for you, Washington were a fun team to watch again this year and I managed to catch a few more games than I thought I would. But there's two upsets I would like to see in this years first round one of them is Washington loosing the the Habs which is such a far stretch it's silly. The other one (technically is an upset only based on the standings) is Nashville beating Detroit.

Just saw this on TSN:

Plekanec on Habs V Caps goaltending:

"It's not as though we are facing (Martin) Brodeur or (Ryan) Miller, they don't have a dominant goaltender. When you look at the goaltending matchup in this series it favours our team. I just believe that our goaltending is more solid than theirs."

"I'm not saying their goalies are bad. I'm just saying our goalies are better."

I don't disagree in any way, but now it's on.

Boudreau said Backstrom, who did not take part in the morning skate, was injured during Sunday's regular-season finale against the Boston Bruins but would not specifically say what was ailing the star forward.

"He's not feeling well and is questionable for Thursday," Boudreau said.

When asked if Backstrom was suffering from food poisoning Boudreau said he didn't know.

"He's questionable. He's sick," the coach said.

Wait, what kind of reporting is that? ESPN says he got injured and in the same paragraph they say he is sick

Well.. just look at his recent performance in the Olympics!

Edit: eh... 2 posts..

I was gonna go on an angry rant about Bodreau not resting Backstrom (and Ovie) in a completely meaningless game and that leading to him getting injured, but if he's just sick I guess it doesn't apply.

...still was kind of stupid though.

the game is two days away, if he was sick, wouldnt there be a big chance he was ready by then? They're definitely hiding something.

[edit] Congrats to Hank!!! Unbelievable season... if the twins carry their play into the post-season, I like our chances. But that's really difficult to guess right now. They've got strong minds these days, but everyone steps it up in the playoffs -- they need to, too.

Eastern Conference
(1) Washington vs (8) Montreal
Washington in 5 (Montreal to win 1 at home, otherwise dominated)
(2) New Jersey vs (7) Philadelphia
Philadelphia in 6 (I had to pick a genuine upset - this is it... Boucher has to stand tall, though)
(3) Buffalo vs (6) Boston
Buffalo in 6 (Miller ... I don't see Rask playing as well as him in the playoffs)
(4) Pittsburgh vs (5) Ottawa
Pittsburgh in 6

Western Conference
(1) San Jose vs (8) Colorado
San Jose in 4
(2) Chicago vs (7) Nashville

(4) Phoenix vs (5) Detroit
Phoenix in 7 (Bryz to face a lot of shots, but outplay Howard)

Yeah, Pleks should also look at his own offense and say "Oh, crap, they don't have amazing goaltending, but we don't really have amazing offense either."
