It's not moving on, Switch will not get every title releasing on the 3DS, and this will be one of those games (of many more to come) that people would rather make on the 3DS as it's a more viable platform and cheaper to produce.

These are the facts of life.
 
I find the lack of Switch version weird, but from a business perspective.

If you are going to be releasing a full Prime 4 on it in the future, releasing this on Switch would be a good way to build a lil hype and re-introduce the franchise to new switch owners who may or may not have played previous games or own a 3ds at all. I don't think there's any harm in having 2 versions.

That said, no way I'm passing this up, keep refreshing amazon for a preorder. Never thought I'd pick up a new 3ds game this year, but Metroid can do that to a person.

& I want to support the franchise, but ergo issues with 3ds are killing me. I felt like my hands were going to fall off halfway through SMTIV:A
 
So is this the reason AM2R was C&D'd? Maybe but Nintendo will C&D anything they feel like so whatever. Looks not bad wish it was at least on both 3DS and Switch.

Nah 3D is the right choice for what they're trying to do.
It would cost much more to actually pull this game in 2D and it would also be far more limiting.
It's trying to be its own thing it's actually a good thing they didn't go the IGA route and just asset flip like no one would notice.

Yes. Nintendo should give a shoutout for devs of a totally unrelated fan project. I will also boycott Smash 5 if they don't give credit to Melee modders or Odyssey if they don't give credit to the devs of those Mario Unreal Engine demos.

Nah, MoF was a good, albeit flawed, game that got a lot more hate than it deserved due to a fan narrative that it was *the* game that killed the Igavania series, more so than the other two LoS games by virtue of being a side-scrolling handheld CV that wasn't an Igavania.

I'm definitely not at all thrilled with this being on 3DS rather than Switch, but SR at least looks to have fixed MoF's biggest flaws (God of War-style combat that wasn't sufficiently rethought for 2D, excessive QTEs, overambitious multi-character structure when a purer Metroid design on a single map would have worked better). Hopefully it can maintain 30fps on the original 3DS, which is what I have.

At some point you guys just need to accept that Nintendo isn't quite done with the 3DS and WILL support it with bespoke software into 2018. You all played yourselves by consistently insisting it was done with despite Nintendo saying it wasn't.

Metroid Prime 4 just got announced for Switch, that's amazing (the announcement of the show for me by far, despite lack of details)! Why does everything have to be on Switch? And every 3DS game being cross gen doesn't make sense, especially not for niche titles like these.

My point is that there is literally nothing that AM2R brings to Metroid that is being used here, it's a fan game and that's it lifting copyrighted work like no tomorrow.
No one is asking for shoutout to Newer SMB in official games either.
 
I can't get over how perfect this looks.

MercurySteam may have had trouble in recent years, but they're clearly capable devs when given a winning formula/proven template like Metroid II and have close supervision from Sakamoto and Nintendo themselves.
 
Looks nice. Can't help but think that this game should've come out 2 years ago, though. Announcing a new 2.5D Metroid for 3DS at E3 2017 sounds like a joke story.

But it does look good. I'll probably buy it assuming Seamus doesn't have an emotional breakdown in it.

I mean if it was me I'd want to promote the new Metroid Prime by releasing a Metroid remake on the same system. But what do I know I don't have any experience running the Metroid franchise into the ground.

There's no reason to put resources towards making the game for two consoles.

It's a 3DS game. The 3DS is alive and well so they made a new game for it. They don't owe it to anyone to put every new 3DS game on both consoles. That's silly and a waste of resources.

(Also, Prime 4 is not 2020. We'll see a full reveal at next E3 for an early 2019 release at the latest. I could see it being Nintendo's big fall 2018 game as well. Nintendo doesn't take forever on their games unless it's Zelda. And this is internal at Nintendo, not Retro.)

Yeah I'm not sure why they're not doing it like before when Metroid Fusion was released on the Gamecube just before Metroid Prime released. Oh wait...

Tons of Switch owners own a 3DS. I'm sure they can whip out theirs if they care enough to play one before Prime 4 releases. Having said all that, I am not opposed to a Prime Trilogy HD remaster on Switch, and honestly that would be far better than putting this on Switch as far as prepping the userbase for new Metroid imo.
 
Was skeptical at first, but the Treehouse Live gameplay totally sold me on this. Keeping the melee/movement stuff from Other M and translating it into 2D for counter-attacks and the like was definitely a great move. Looks amazing. Can't wait! ^__^

Given how good the gameplay looks and how faithful it is to classic elements of Metroid gameplay like the infinite bomb jump, perhaps the problem with Mirrors of Fate were largely Konami-caused after all? And if they weren't, they certainly seemed to have turned it around regardless. Whatever the case, they don't seem to translate here.

After the Wii last years fuck not supporting old hardware, just leaving owners to dry like that is stupid.

Yeah, seems a little strange considering the 3DS is not the flagship console.
I know it was probably made since the start for 3DS, and not releasing it, considering the amount of 3DSs already sold would be a bad move, but at least I want a port for the Switch. My 3DS hasn't been used since I got the Switch.

I would say I could understand if there weren't games coming to the Switch or people prefer 2D Metroid to 3D Prime, but there is clearly an amount of entitlement from Switch owners that assumed a hybrid console would mean combined development from day one. It wasn't even something Nintendo ever promoted and something fans purely built up in their mind. It's definitely an exciting prospect, but just like other assumptions I made that are wrong, there is no point in me holding a grudge since things didn't turn out exactly how I imagined.

That may (and likely will) happen in the future, but the 3DS still has a big install base (unlike the Wii U) and a different architecture/hardware format with 2 screens/3D. We also are seeing games that were likely in development before the Switch so even if they keep 3DS around for a while longer as another pillar, there is always a chance for games to be cross-developed or ported between the 2 systems in the future.

I own both systems and, even having had really enjoyed my 3DS, would like everything to come to my Switch instead (I'd personally trade dual screens/3D for better sticks/better resolution/hybrid functionality these days) but I know I'm either willing to get the game if I need it that bad, or just wait if I don't feel like playing on the 3DS/want a port. There is no point in throwing a tantrum in denial that the 3DS is still a thing. Just accept it and move on. We didn't get this same whining when a game for the 3DS didn't come to the Wii U, which actually had a dual screen set up.

I doubt it. Nintendo is highly protective of their IP's and they will C&D anyone that tries to recreate their work and give it away for free. I have no doubt in my mind that AM2R was the reason why they decided to produce an official remake.

As for this remake... I actually like the look of the game and I think it is interesting that they went with a 2.5d gameplay style. Shame that it is on 3DS only... but then again the original Metroid 2 was made for a handheld device as well... Maybe they will port it over to the switch afterwards?

3DS is not the best platform for this game (it looks like shit - modern 16-bit would've been much better) though and I do think that Switch is the best option here.

Dude that game was trash tier.

Graphics sucked, gameplay was trash tier, it was too slow, framerate was off the fucking charts bad... Ect...

The idea that now it's been like 5 years and people say MoF might have gotten too much hate is ludicrous. It was attrocious to the point I'm surprised anyone let alone Nintendo would give them work again.

It's a slap in the face Mercury Steam of all people is doing this.

Alright, first off, how much effort would it really take to bring this game to Switch? I really can't imagine there would be all that much difficulty in making a Switch port. Moreover, if Nintendo approved the development of this game, that means they believe there's demand and profits to be made. If that's the case, why not release on Switch, so as to make it available to an even wider audience and increase demand for their current platform and 3DS succesor? I can't understand Nintendo's rationale here.

Beyond all of that, how long can 3DS support really be expected to go on at this point? The system came out in 2011, and it has a 240p resolution screen (!), not to mention it's very uncomfortable to hold and play games on, IMO. Playing games on that thing is an awful experience in this day and age.
 
The hatred in this thread is outstanding. Mercury Steams Castlevania was actually good. Just because it's not an igavania apparently it's auto trash. As a throwback compromise to the DS ones, it has good controls, good music, and plenty of action. Graphics are good and it bridges Lords of Shadow 1 and part 2 quite well. I like sprite based Castlevania as well but let's not pile on unnecessarily. The game is a solid 7.

Since Nintendo is letting them take on the remake I imagine they'll be doubling down on quality to stay on their good side. Metroid 2 is not exactly a high bar Metroid game. Suffering from the classic game boy new release it has a few new good ideas with some bad ones. No one here is gonna say it was a masterpiece, on the contrary after Zero Mission I think everyone wanted a full remake that would fix it's problems for the DS. It's been years since and I have full confidence in them to do a great job with Metroid 2. I mean, it can't be worse than Other M.

Why would Nintendo give a shoutout to a dev who had nothing to do with development of this game and tried to cut into Nintendo business and potential sales of this remake?

Exactly. The point of "you could have said Fusion should be on GameCube" would apply to what people are asking for here.

And like I said earlier, this game likely wouldn't exist at all if the 3DS wasn't still a thing. And if GBA didn't exist, we wouldn't have gotten Fusion.

Just be happy we got two new Metroid games. My goodness.
