Naughty Dog Announces Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

As someone who was tired of Uncharted and not a big fan of The Last of Us(I more like the mp in the first game), this has me somewhat excited again about a Naughty Dog game. Will not be up in arms about the design of the main character although im not exactly thrilled about it neither. But whatever, im excited to see a gameplay reveal whenever that happens. Thing is there was no hint of a release date;(

But we turned into a magnet for the ones who can cross into rage territory at the drop of a hat. It's dominating not just individual discussions, but the whole vibe of the place.
It's true and I've definitely felt this increasingly over the last five years or so. GAF has become an incel magnet, attracting the worst kind of dumb young male gamer out there. I'm too old for this dumb shit, makes me wonder why I bother coming here sometimes.

But its not in every game. its not even the majority of games. thats why this shit so stupid. A few big titles had a boss chick protagonist. AND those were not bad games.
Nope not every game, but the proportion is completely out of whack. People are sick of it mate, media in general. The backlash is not unique to gaf, it's everywhere. Why does almost every female protagonist have to be masculine or ugly? I understand the mid 2000s bald burly white guy was tired as fuck but it's now 5ft3 women going around beating up 6ft men for boss bitch points. ND are one of the most woke studios today, so I'm not surprised this thread (and almost everywhere else btw) is so negative towards it

Anti-woke crew is just as bad as the woke people that they hate. Opposite sides of the same idiocy. I don’t like woke shit in games but I don’t think every female character in a game has to look attractive or even feminine for that matter, and I don’t decide to buy or trash games based solely on what the characters in it look or identify as. If this game is good which it looks to be I’ll give it a chance. The main character looking butt ugly has no bearing on whether it will be a great game or not.
Im one of the "anti-woke crew", the difference between woke is- we dont shame ppl for liking or not liking any game, we just say why we dont like it/wont buy it ourselfs.

Some1 like bald masculine female blasians and wanna play game with protag looking like that- good for him, hf buying game/playing it(if u arent secret account of a dev or sellout professional journalist, those dont pay for games, hence terrible sales of most woke games ;), myself tho- i prefer protagonist of my games either be strong masculine males, or very feminine looking sexy women, and thats it, no soyboys, no masculine women, no anything else.

Want to have more games like this one, concord, sw:eek:, da:v then keep supporting them, i dont so ofc i wont support them, even on a deep sale, since character design is very offputing, enough to not play such a game at all.
Since i live in a free world/country im allowed to have my own opinion, which somehow is foreign concept for many westerners, u will never shame males into buying shitty woke games, we were liking games and spending all our money on them even back in the 80s and 90s, when gaming was shamefull hobby, we did it coz we loved games, so no1 elses opinion matters ;)

For gaffers who love woke games- i will say same thing i said to them at concord's launch- go buy 10k copies, its only 70k usd after all, let the money do the talking and see how it turns out, its ur money and ur decision same way spending my money is my decision :)

That's the problem, they can't, because they can only view women as sexual objects.

No wonder they’re unhappy, I hear the Jackie Treehorn approach is far more fulfilling.

Product placement doesn’t bother me especially in sports titles.

The only thing that did feel out of place and forced was the Porsche wording on the back of a space ship
For me, I dont mind ads in sports games because that's the norm in every sports. Making the movie or video game have stadium ads of made up brands would look cheap and cheesy.

But for non-sports, I find it cringey. Especially in movies where someone holds a coke can in your face or there's a blatant KFC logo. In reality, people are surrounded by brands and logos all the time so in a way it's not uncommon for someone to drink a Starbucks coffee in front of you. But there's something about it that feels fake and a cash grab.

But in sports, it feels more acceptable. That's just me though.

The problem is not only that the main character is an ugly bald Asian woman, but that she is arrogant, smug and absolutely unpleasant in her behavior. Just a repulsive character.

You could say that there were a lot of rude ugly guys as protagonists back in the day, but most of them were bad guys, antiheroes. They knew they were morrons. Like for example Max Payne in Max Payne 3 knew he is a scumbag.

But this Asian lady is presented (and will be presented until the end) as a flawless, perfect hero.
I doubt it. Ellie wasn't presented as a flawless and perfect hero. Also you are judging the whole character based one trailer.

Krator in the old God of War games was an arrogant, smug and absolutely unpleasant in his behavior. You could call him a repulsive character. Most still liked him.

I actually agree, the mods started to initially address it and told people to stop but they gave up and now its rampant women haters. It's not even specific to the LGBTQA+ like it started, now its just women. Even if they're hot lol, they're only hot when they have implants.

And im not even close to woke (love Stellar Blade and her hotness), i agree that DEI took things too far but this is sickening

It is tiring. I understand. The last several years have led to a certain sensitivity and I think it's justified - to an extent. But we turned into a magnet for the ones who can cross into rage territory at the drop of a hat. It's dominating not just individual discussions, but the whole vibe of the place.

The word politics is broad. It is hard to draw the line with the no-politics rule when it is notably influencing media. I get it. I really do. But at some point you're spiraling into an echo chamber and the drone needs to a headache whether you agree with the opinions or not.

Era got to a point where some games would get so hated for simply showing a character that it started to feel weird just dropping a neutral comment about the actual game without sounding off about the Injustice of it all. It was actually impeding its function as a place to talk about video games. Put aside what team you're on and look at the larger dynamic.

When I saw the trailer and noted the tired archetype of the protagonist, I was a little let down because it's dull, but my mind went more to how bad the reaction was going to be on here. How it was going to be a while before you could talk about the actual game for more than five posts on each page. I should add though, that I didn't expect the game to get ratio so hard outside of here. So I don't want to be too hard on the place.

We're not banning the game obviously. A mistake that era has made a couple times until they put their foot down on it with stellar blade. Yes, there was a lengthy post from an administrator telling everyone stop asking for the game discussion to be banned and why that would be wrong. They didn't admit the mistake they made with cyberpunk and Hogwarts, but still they learned and finally stood up to their community. They're still going to get discussion of given games drowned out by culture warriors. That's a lot harder to draw a crisp line in the sand, there. That's not just a pain when you're trying to follow that game, but it's a bad look for the whole place and obnoxious to be steeped in constantly.

By all means, sound off. I'm not the only one who doesn't want to change your mind, but is just looking for some place where they can get away from all of it. A place that doesn't exist anymore on the internet. I suppose it's nice to want things.
I left era for that reason it felt like cult over there and here its starting to feel just as bad. You use to be able to have reasonable discussions here but now fuck it.

The meta-game here has a lot of potential.
And you can enjoy it without owning a P(l)aystation👍

Its funny because old gaf we would disect the trailer, screen shot blow ups and pull all this info out. Have real discussions about character design, possible story arcs, gameplay etc. Now its the anti woke mob hijacking every thread talking boobies and hair. Annoying as fuck

You're not wrong.

But like someone else said, the industry created this problem.

I would love nothing more than to go back to those old conversations, but I don't blame people for pointing out the obvious here. I used to not pay any attention to it, but it's getting ridiculous at this point. It's clear many people miss playing games as old school, bad ass, more masculine and serious characters to experience escapism without modern day, forced developer tiktok fetishes being injected. It's everywhere now and it's exhausting...and I am tired of pretending it's not.

Now it's mostly all the same old "girl boss" characters with an attitude and gen z dialogue with over the top toxic positivity in most of these new games nowadays. Feel free to disagree, I don't even care what people call me anymore, but this is what I see and I'd be lying to everyone if I said it doesn't affect the overall appeal of a game, movie, tv show, etc..

A few years ago I would have salivated at the thought of a sci-fi Naughty Dog game. Now imagine the reception of this game's reveal yesterday if the main character for Intergllactic was a character resembling Solid Snake or Nathan Drake instead of teenage Jada Pinkett Smith, voiced by David Hayter or Nolan North. But nope....we can't have that anymore. Because fuck the old target audience, we want to attract a new demographic of players. We'll see how that plays out.

I am also not blind. The old GDC keynotes from Druckmann where he was virtue signaling and mirroring Anita Sarkeesian's obsessive remarks, all the recent years of media and social media brainwashing people telling them how bad or racist men are, the totally unnecessary Sweet Baby Inc consultations and threatening influences that have infected SIE and other companies, the fake corporate lingo advocating this stuff saying they care when we all know they don't give a shit...

It's all just exhausting. So yeah, we're going to talk about it.

This trailer with descriptive audio is cracking me up

(Timestamped at 1:05)

"In a small bathroom a young multiracial woman uses clippers to buzz down her scalp"

Reminds me of that Microsoft presenter from a few years ago "I'm a caucasian man with glasses and a beard. I go by he/him."

You hit the nail on the head.

I feel like it's slowly but surely becoming impossible to discuss games around here anymore. If I wanted a 24/7 woke/anti-woke slapfight, I'd just go to Twitter or Bluesky and get my fill there.

People did dissect the video.

- Woke girl shaving her head right away
- Copy of GotG vibe (one part sci-fi, one part goofy)
- Cheesy Porsche brand placement
- Pet Shop Boys. lol
- In some of those older posts, people compared it to Cowboy Bebop or anime shows showing a character holding a sword with more of a square shaped blade

Was curious what Naughty Dog had been up to all this time...and I just feel nothing from this.

Couldn't care less about the character design, it's just a bland teaser that does nothing to intrigue me on the game.

Some broken planet spiral, generic ass laser sword, Porsche branding, and I just come away wishing Guardians of the Galaxy never got popular.

The awards had numerous better looking games than this, hopefully they'll show something interesting next time.
Yea it's surprisingly bland and generic looking for ND game. I reminds me of a game you'd see being made for VR.

It's tough when you see someone link a Grummz tweet or something equally dumb more and more. Talk about the game and not shit culture war.

Old IP: why are they shoehorning women into the game. Make their own.

New IP: why did they force a women into this new IP.

That's the talking points. Okay now move on and discuss the actual game.

Best post I've seen on the state of gaming discourse in a while.

Its really bad when you feel a sense of dread on even entering a thread on a new game anymore.

What she says is her personal politics. Yes, there is a lot in the industry pushing that point of view as well, I agree. Not sure why anyone should care about what she says personally unless it makes its way into the game.

Unless it was a straight white male as the protagonist, pitchforks were going to come out for Naughty Dog's next game, regardless. TLOU2 is arguably patient zero when it came to the "woke mob" in video games

TLOU2 wasn't even that woke. The game didn't overly preach or bash players over the head with ideological messaging. It's LGBTQ characters just existed, which is how they should be portrayed in media. At the time, people were much more mad about Joel being killed off and playing as his killer. From a story perspective, it is still the biggest risk any studio has made in gaming.

You may not like TLOU2, but you should respect Naughty Dog's balls of not playing it safe and predictable, like 90% of the industry has. They are seemingly doing everything to push the medium forward with their games

I left era for that reason it felt like cult over there and here its starting to feel just as bad. You use to be able to have reasonable discussions here but now fuck it.
WIth all due respect, what did you expect, dude? That people just stfu and gobble everything up without a second thought?

You may not like hearing it, but this is what a "diverse" discussion looks like. People come from different walks of life and contribute their takes on a given subject. Clearly, not everyone is in agreeance and disagreements will be had about the direction of this game.

As someone in the know, you should be more receptive to this kind of nuance.

That's where you are wrong. It's not her personal politics, these kind of people want their politics to become your politics.

You are naive as hell if you think they won't inject their personal agenda in a game.
