In a vacuum I would like for the Democrats to do better with rural whites. If we could substantially improve our performance without hurting ourselves elsewhere, great. The issue is, and I speak here as someone who spends a fair amount of time visit relatives in rural areas, that I have a hard time seeing how to do so without alienating other voters who are part of the base or otherwise low-hanging fruit that would be easier to persuade. In a country that is becoming increasingly urban and diverse I do not think that tradeoff is worth it.
There is no way to appeal to most rural whites, particularly Tea Party types. They are then ones who have been for years demanding that the GOP nominate someone like Trump.
The closest thing we COULD do is have Democrats try to create narratives for inclusive mindsets in ways that make social conservatism VERY unlikable to rural whites who lean more Libertarian than Tea Party.
That way we could start becoming more competitive in states like Alaska and Wyoming and solidify holds on states like NH and Maine.
I really think there is potential to isolate the deplorables and make the Democratic Big Tent end up including everyone who isn't a deplorable.
